Prey 23, 2021 | Celestine Finch would have hobbled back to Robin if her paw wasn’t possibly harboring a dog bite, and she was supposed to stay where Zephyr could find her. And so, there she was, waiting by the small twoleg den. She leaned to check on her paw, discovering that the cobwebs had stopped the wound from bleeding. Thank the stars; she had one less issue to worry about.
She was thankful for Zephyr’s kindness, despite their being a stranger, and she was wondering already, whether they would make a good candidate as a future WindClan cat. She shook the thought away, aware of how silly the idea was, considering she hadn’t even reached WindClan’s home yet. She wasn’t even sure if Zephyr knew of the clans, being that they had never left their home before.
She rested her chin on her non-wounded paw, about to close her eyes and rest, when she noticed a cat padding toward her. Zephyr. She straightened up, trying and failing to shake off the tiredness that came over her. She mewed a greeting and saw that Zephyr had in fact found an herb. Whether or not it was the right herb, Finch was about to find out.
“Set it down in front of me and I’ll sniff it,” said Finch. Idly, she commented, “You took your time.”

[break] | [attr="class","fatecontainer2temp1"] [break][break] [attr="class","fatecontenttemp1"] Although not horribly cumbersome, it was a strange feeling carrying the plant back. The mink could still run fine, and they took advantage of that fact to make up for the delay, but they had to remain conscious of the stalk that extended past their whiskers' sensory range. Nonetheless, wider gaps and awkward head tilting aside, Zephyr returned with ease. [break][break] Zephyr was glad to find the calico right where they had left her. She looked to be resting as Zephyr approached, eyes closed and still. For a moment, the mink felt a spark of worry. It faded swiftly as the queen straightened, looking drowsy but otherwise fine. [break][break] Ears twitching as Finch spoke, Zephyr pondered the request. That was a good sign, right? If the herb had to be sniffed, it must have looked precisely as expected. Surely there was little chance of a near identical herb with completely different properties. Then again, Zephyr knew their herbal knowledge was lacking at best. [break][break] Zephyr was just about to set the herb down, when Finch spoke again. They paused. "Right, I-" Zephyr stopped, blinking. They what? Hallucinated someone who had been missing for moons and went on a wild chase they had known would be fruitless? No. It would serve no use to prove crazy as well as tardy. [break][break] "Sorry," Zephyr corrected themself. "Here." They lowered the plant and nosed it toward her before stepping back. Delayed or not, Zephyr hoped the plant would make up for it.

Prey 23, 2021 | Celestine There was something off about the herb that Zephyr collected. It looked odd, out of place. She hadn’t used horsetail for some time, but still. She hunched over to the clump of herb, careful to avoid pressing weight on her paw, and kept her nose a claw-length away from the pine-headed tip. She sniffed, inviting the herb’s scent into her nose. It was relatively aromatic, a far cry from horsetail’s recognizable stink.
“This isn’t horsetail,” she said, nudging the herbs back to Zephyr. “I don’t know what this is, but I don’t think it’ll will help with the wound. Sorry…”
Finch pondered for a second, of what to do next, and unwilling to waste more time by sending Zephyr out to find the herb in the field. And then, an idea came. She hoisted herself to her full height, lifting her wounded paw off the ground, and nodded at the other cat. “I have an—I’ll come with you to make things easier. Does that sound okay? Just make sure not to walk too far ahead of me.”
The sun had now matured across the sky, nearly leaning to sunhigh. Had that much time passed already? Stars…

[break] | [attr="class","fatecontainer2temp1"] [break][break] [attr="class","fatecontenttemp1"] Zephyr watched carefully as Finch sniffed the herb, awaiting a sign of success or failure in even the slightest twitch of expression. They need not have bothered. Finch wasted little time in nudging the herb back toward them. [break][break] "That is a shame," Zephyr said. They bent to give it another sniff, as though that might enlighten them on their mistake. It did not. Why had they not thought of asking for a scent description? Well, hindsight would not help them now. [break][break] Stepping back, Zephyr allowed Finch to rise, already making a guess at her plan. Time had been wasted already, them rushing back and forth would only waste more. Of course, they had only themself to blame. Zephyr knew better. It was never real. Even if it had been Tempest, since when had their sibling known anything of herbs? Well, mistakes were nothing if not a chance to learn. It was just a shame it came at Finch's cost. [break][break] "Of course," Zephyr said, no less cooperative than before. They knew their limits. Even if Zephyr wanted to spare Finch the trouble, they knew coming back with the wrong herb a second time would not help. Besides, the calico could make her own choices. [break][break] Reasoning they would not need to lead along the stretch that could be seen from the shed, Zephyr fell into step alongside the queen. Thinking back to the dog's strange behavior and the following glimpse of Tempest, Zephyr could not help but wonder once more; had the beast somehow known? Whether it did or not, there was still no avoiding what may be to come. It was best that Finch knew, at least in part. [break][break] Zephyr broke the silence lightly, although a new serious undertone skimmed their words. "Finch, we can trust each other, yes? Aid for aid?"

Prey 23, 2021 | Celestine The cobwebs were still tightly wrapped over her paw. Finch was thankful for that; she could feel the blood dripping from her wound. Though, with one less leg to stand on, she was limping the whole way to the fenced off field. Ahead, she saw the fluffy, white creatures in a lusciously green pasture. Those most be the “sheep” Zephyr spoke of. Her eyes widened. They were far larger than she imagined… She dropped to the ground, stomach flushed against prickly blades of grass, and crept underneath the fence. She was careful about her injured paw, but the friction between the grass and her sensitive wound caused her to yelp. At last, she made it out on the other side, Zephyr in tow. She started scouting out for a patch of horsetail, when a voice caught her attention. It was firmer than their previous conversation, nothing like the snippets of smalltalk from before. “Finch, we can trust each other, yes? Aid for aid?” Her ear flicked to the side, confused at the out-of-the-blue question, and she arched a head to the brownish colorpoint. “Yes, I would hope so. Why?”
