[break] | [attr="class","fatecontainer2temp1"] [break][break] [attr="class","fatecontenttemp1"] ‘You can’t keep doing this.’ [break][break] Memories, thoughts, or voices no one else could hear. Sometimes it was difficult for Zephyr to pick these things apart. In the end they all meld together, weaving through the mind into one repeated instruction. Give up. It was not in Zephyr’s repertoire, but even they were starting to see the sense in it. This time, the words did not reach Zephyr’s ears. Safe then, perhaps, but still right. [break][break] ‘Let me check, just one more time. Just one.’ [break][break] The repetition probably would not help. It never served to argue with oneself, even when the thoughts did not always seem to belong to them. But Zephyr sensed this time the balance may have shifted. Perhaps it really was time. [break][break] Crawling free of their scooped out nest beneath the hedge row, the lynx point flicked away stray droplets from the recent summer shower, tongue curling in a yawn as they arched into a stretch. The rain had done little to cool the farmland air, the warm humidity clinging to Zephyr’s pelt. [break][break] Allowing themself to stall for another moment, Zephyr picked a few loose leaves and debris from their thick fur. A flicker of movement caught their periphery. Head shooting up, wide blue eyes spotted a feline form streaking past, quick to disappear into the foliage. Resisting impulses was still a skill in development. [break][break] “Tempest?” The call echoed out with hesitance, something of a question. Yet still the mink had already risen to their paws. With little more consideration, Zephyr made chase, paws flying over familiar terrain. [break][break] Familiar, but not well evaluated. [break][break] A low bark hit them like a wave of reality. Claws flexing into the earth Zephyr slammed to a halt, ears swiveling. They had forgotten the new twolegs had yet to fix the fence. There. To the left, pawsteps thumped closer, a large nose snuffling low to the ground. Zephyr’s fur bristled along their spine as they crouched, tail bushing and ears listing back. [break][break] ‘Claws out, no sudden movements. Keep calm and get to the fence.’ The dog was a chaser, Zephyr had learned. Move carefully and it may not aggress. They could do this. [break][break] A moment later, the dog was looming over them, tail swaying slowly and nose twitching. It whined. A high pitched sound of anxiety and confusion met Zephyr’s ears, and they twitched warily. The dog sniffed again and shuffled its paws, tail lowering against its haunches. It did not leave. Zephyr blinked, perplexed. A stalemate.

Prey 23, 2021 | CelestineA few days after meeting with Shellspots, Finch and Robin made their way around the river, crossing into the hillier part of the plains. By now, the moore stretched out ahead of them, an open expanse of endless sky. Her head was held high, knowing that they were so close to the ancestral land of WindClan. So close… But after Robin’s complaints about feeling tired or hunger, Finch finally gave in and took the two of them to a twolegplace where there’d hopefully be food.
This twolegplace was different from the one Finch and Robin came from. Rather than being populated by sleek and silver towers, the twoleg dens were smaller and made of woods. There was also a lot more room to walk, and large fields of cultivated plants that seemed bigger than the herbs found in the twoleg gardens from their old home. It wasn’t difficult to find a small, abandoned twoleg den to take shelter in. And without the constant drone of monsters, Finch found it easier to lay her head down and sleep.
It was the best rest she ever had. She wished she could tell Garlic about how nice it was to sleep here! Oh, to show him how wrong he was…
By the time she woke up, Robin was still asleep. Finch leaned over and licked the top of Robin’s forehead, bidding a silent goodbye. “I’ll be back, my darling.”
Pushing the open the wooden flap of the den, she peered out into the open, the humid air clinging to her neck fur. Pressing her paw in the dirt, she winced as she felt a squelch. The scent of petrichor lay on her tongue. If only the rain had washed away the greenleaf heat, she thought, padding across the grass. Her thoughts were interrupted by a sharp bark, followed by a high-pitched whine.
Looking across, Finch saw a large dog and a dark brown point, facing each other off, but neither made a sudden move. They were, effectively, frozen in place. She searched the cat’s expression to gauge whether she should intervene or stay out of their business. But padding off without another word felt… off to Finch. She couldn’t just leave the cat alone.
“Back off!” She cautiously approached the dog, ears pinned back, lips drawn into a low hiss. She faced dog before. She knew how to attack them—slashing the nose was their weakest point; a quick blow, and the dog usually backed off. She knew how to stand her ground. But when she was a tail-length away from the dog, she realized how much larger they were. She swallowed.
By now, the dog was aware of Finch, its attention diverted from the other cat. Unfortunately, the dog seemed to have fewer qualms about attacking her, as it gave a loud bark for a warning. She bristled, kept up the hissing, and unsheathed her claws. This was her warning. The dog took that as further proof to make an attack, rushing at Finch with full speed.
“Run!” Finch shouted at the other cat.
Then she stared the dog in the eye, looking hard into its oak brown gaze, then turned to its large nose, and with a raised paw, she brought it down with a slash!
An awful crunching sound promptly occurred afterward. The dog’s grip on her arm released once their nose started bleeding. And then came a howl of pain, and they bolted off in the opposite direction. Finch breathed out a sigh of relief, though the moment was soured by the piercing pain clamping on her forearm. She felt the cool drip of liquid running down her fur. She prayed to the stars above that the wound was not infected…

[break] | [attr="class","fatecontainer2temp1"] [break][break] [attr="class","fatecontenttemp1"] The world seemed to hold its breath as feline eyes held canine, uneasy confusion echoed in kind. One might say the dog looked more anxious. It whined again, quieter this time. The strangeness felt ethereal. Despite their better judgement, Zephyr's ears tilted softly forward, gaze flickering a more curious observation. [break][break] 'Are you real?' They dare not speak the thought aloud. [break][break] The stillness shattered to a sharp hiss. The world crashing back into awareness, two heads swiveled in sync. Another cat. Arched and hissing, she approached with what seemed a cautious determination. Zephyr blinked; mind still muddled by that strange held breath. Even the dog rushing by seemed alien, until a shout snapped them into focus like a crack of thunder. [break][break] 'Run!' [break][break] At least Zephyr's instincts did not need telling twice. Wheeling around, the mink stumbled slightly before rightening, body low as they dashed at the fence. With a powerful spring of long hind limbs, they propelled themself upward, claws barely needing to grapple for purchase. Zephyr stabilized, gaze darting back over their shoulder. The howl of pain sent a shudder rippling along their spine. [break][break] The dog had barely departed before Zephyr's paws touched grass once more, dashing low back toward the stranger. The copper tang of blood stung their throat, souring their senses. They ignored it, halting hardly a tail-length from the calico, wide blue eyes searching. They spied the wound in mere heartbeats. [break][break] "By the moon, are you alright?" Zephyr willed their fur to smooth as they resisted the urge to lap at the wound. This was not Tempest, nor Delphi. Real or otherwise, Zephyr did not know this cat. [break][break] "Thank you." The two words bathed in sincerity, although not without a hint of confusion. Zephyr's voice had calmed, even as their twitching tail betrayed remaining agitation. "That was very brave."

Prey 23, 2021 | Celestine The stranger appeared before her with wide blue eyes staring up at her fresh wounds. Finch risked a look down. Was it that bad? Deep teeth imprints were left on her arm fur, blood dripping on to the dirt path beneath.
“It’s nothing I can’t handle,” she said, trying to ease her own nerves. Garlic would have seen nastier wounds, being in the side of twolegplace that was rife with warfare. “I’ve fought dogs before.”
But she never had a dog bitten her so vehemently.
Unsure of where the dog’s mouth had been, she had to assume the wound was infected—the trouble was where she could find the resources to do so. Though Garlic taught her some of what he knew about herbs, he found his herbs from twoleg gardens. Finch wasn’t familiar with horseplace, its twolegs, or its herbs. And from the area she could see, she didn’t spot any horsetail growing at the side of the path.
As she turned to the stranger, she was surprised when they said a “Thank you.” Finch noticed their twitching tail, but decided not to bring it up, believing the cat to still be rattled by the dog. She dipped her head in acknowledgment of the compliment. “I couldn’t stand by and let that dog harass you. I’m Finch, by the way. What’s your name? And do you know where I might find cobwebs or horsetail?”

Her words seemed to suggest something more like desensitization. Zephyr's ears twitched, perplexed as to why she might fight the beasts, but more concerned about the injury than pressing the matter. Zephyr would have been rushed to the vet with a wound like that. [break][break] Apparently, that was not on this cat's agenda. [break][break] Instead, the calico went on to introduce herself, explaining her intent. Zephyr dipped their head. "I am Zephyr." The mink's mind wandered back to the encounter, peering toward the dog's home in thought. Their old home. [break][break] "It sure was acting strange today," they observed. "Usually it chases or sniffs, but it has never whined like that. Almost like it was afraid of something..." The last part added quietly to themself, Zephyr shook their head, refocusing. It seemed they both had strange priorities. [break][break] "Horsetail?" The feline blinked in confusion, blue gaze roving the fields as if for answers. "I assume you don't mean—" Zephyr's gaze briefly caught a nearby horse, noting it's swishing brush of a tail. Certainly not. They returned their attention to the calico. "Cobwebs I can help with, although that leg seems more important right now...I know a twoleg nearby who would take you to the vet."

Prey 23, 2021 | Celestine “Zephyr, you say? It’s a pretty name,” said Finch, managing a smile in spite of the pain from her foreleg.
“Afraid… of something?” she angled her head forward to Zephyr to make sure her ears heard correctly. The short phrase planted a seed of curiosity in her mind, one rife with possibilities, but the most prominent answer tugged at her: why would the dog be afraid?
Finch barked out a laugh, and for a moment, she forgot the pain in her paw. The utter confusion in Zephyr’s pale blue eyes was priceless and it reminded her of a cooing pigeon from twolegplace. Clearly, this cat never used herbs before. Were they a kittypet? “Horsetail is a type of herb. I’ll need it to treat my wound.”
Her blood ran cold at the suggestion of being taken away by a twoleg, and she shook her head abruptly. “I’m not a kittypet. I’m not letting any twoleg touch me. And besides… my kit is still waiting for me in a den nearby. I can’t leave them behind to fend for themself.”

[break] | [attr="class","fatecontainer2temp1"] [break][break] [attr="class","fatecontenttemp1"] Pretty? Zephyr's ears flicked at the word, curious. It was not something used to describe Zephyr nor anything of theirs often. Most assumed they were male, and pretty was not a typical word one used for toms and gibs. Even so, it seemed a compliment, if the slightly strained smile was anything to go by. The mink dipped their head. [break][break] "Thank you." [break][break] At Finch's questioning echo, Zephyr realized they must have finished their thought aloud. Unphased, the mink simply nodded thoughtfully. "Yes," they agreed. "It seemed to be showing typical dog fear-signals, or at least signs of anxiety. Dogs have reacted strangely to me before, but this was different. I wonder if..." Trailing off, Zephyr frowns, before shaking their head. [break][break] 'No, that would be a very risky experiment.' Zephyr's attention shifted back to their company. [break][break] This cat's mood seemed to change quite quickly. One moment Finch was laughing at the misunderstanding of what this horsetail was, and the next she had stiffened abruptly. Zephyr's tail twitched a little warily, but they made no other move. Instead, they listened. Ah. This cat was a parent, and certainly held no trust for twolegs. Zephyr supposed that was not uncommon. Relaxing again, they nodded in understanding. [break][break] "Of course, avoid the twolegs and get you patched up for your kit then. This way." Turning, they gestured toward a nearby shed. Should Finch follow, Zephyr would start leading the way. "You seem to know what you are doing. Describe this horsetail to me, perhaps I have seen it around?" Although they did not know herbs for the most part, Zephyr did like studying their surroundings. There was no harm in trying.

Prey 23, 2021 | Celestine Finch wanted to ask more about the dog’s strange behavior, but the bite wound nagged at her arm, begging for her attention foremost. It would have to be a conversation for later, she supposed.
She was surprised at Zephyr’s understanding toward her distrust to twolegs. She was used to cats being more insistent upon seeking their twolegs out for help. And perhaps she would have considered it, if she hadn’t heard stories of what happened to strays when a twoleg took hold of them. Hopping after Zephyr, careful to avoid stepping on her injured paw, she followed them to the shed.
“Have you seen a reed bed before?” asked Finch. “Horsetail looks a bit like a reed, but its tip looks more like a pinecone. It likes growing in moist areas, but sometimes you can find it on patches at the side of a path. If you’re wondering what it does, horsetail stops wounds from bleeding and prevents infection.”
Glancing down at her bloody leg, she said, “I’m worried most about infection.”

[break] | [attr="class","fatecontainer2temp1"] [break][break] [attr="class","fatecontenttemp1"] Satisfied with the calico hobbling along behind them, Zephyr took the easiest path to the shed, mindful of the difficulties some routes might pose to the now three-legged cat. It was still a wonder to them that she would risk her life like that to save a stranger. Although part of Zephyr had sensed the dog may not have attacked at all without Finch's arrival, that did not lessen their gratitude. Nor their fascination. [break][break] Ears canted back while they walked, Zephyr listened as Finch spoke. With a brief nod to her question, the mink kept quiet as Finch described the plant. It was certainly a solid description. Filing away the mention of its usage for later, Zephyr hummed thoughtfully as they searched their memory. They had seen a lot since leaving their first home, and when they were not keeping watch for their old family, exploration had been a preferred pastime. [break][break] "That does sound familiar," Zephyr mused. "I will think on it more. Come." [break][break] It had not taken too long to reach the shed, and Zephyr gave it a scouring glance. With a blink, they turned and padded toward the right, examining where a wooden beam had fallen against the side. There a spider had woven a large web, now slightly battered and abandoned. Zephyr glanced back toward Finch. "Will this one do? There are more if you need, fresher and older, mostly around the windows." [break][break] Truthfully, Zephyr was not really sure what purpose the cobweb would serve, but Finch seemed quite certain of its importance. Zephyr knew little of healing. But they could still help further. Allowing the calico to examine the web and do with it as she pleased, Zephyr cast their thoughts back to the plant. A pinecone tipped reed, moist areas...ah, yes. Zephyr had a feeling they could find it. [break][break] 'I hope she does not mind sheep,' Zephyr thought.

Prey 23, 2021 | Celestine “Horsetail is a relatively common herb. You’ve most likely seen it before,” said Finch, trying to disguise the relief in her voice. If its description sounded familiar to Zephyr, there was hope! She followed Zephyr’s pawsteps. A short period of time afterwards, they arrived at a another twoleg shed. About to ask what was different about this shed, as it looked as identical to the one she and Robin were staying in, until her eyes landed on a large web filling the gap between the slanted wooden plank and the shed’s exterior wall.
“No, these webs will do,” she said, limping over. Though older webs lose their residue quicker than newer ones, these were the most she could use to bandage the wound. She tore off a piece of the web with her jaws and then proceeded to painstakingly wrap the stringy substance over her bleeding wound over and over, until it hugged against her paws tightly. When her work was finished, she nodded at Zephyr.
“Thank you. These should stop the bleeding for now. I might need more cobwebs, but it’s not a pressing issue. I can wait later for strong support. For now, we need to focus on disinfecting the wound by finding horsetail.”

[break] | [attr="class","fatecontainer2temp1"] [break][break] [attr="class","fatecontenttemp1"] The shortest and safest path already forming in their mind, along with a general radius of where the plant would likely be, Zephyr glanced back toward their companion. By the leaning plank, the calico was meticulously wrapping the web around her injury. It looked an awkward task, likely quite fiddly with the stickiness of the web, yet Finch bound the wound efficiently. How curious. [break][break] Ears twitching as Finch spoke up, Zephyr padded closer once more, aiming to give the makeshift wrapping a curious sniff. If Finch backed away, they would not follow, but their gaze took in the work all the same, whiskers tilting forward. It fascinated Zephyr that cats could have such ways of treating wounds beyond keeping them clean. Was this common among wild-born? [break][break] Seemingly satisfied with their inspection, Zephyr stepped back with a nod, before angling their head toward the fields upwind. "The horsetail plant should be that way, among the sheep fields if I recall correctly. They should not bother us if we do not stray under-hoof." Ears twitching, Zephyr took a few steps in the indicated direction, before glancing back to examine Finch. [break][break] "Would you rather stay here while I retrieve it? It would probably be best not to aggravate the wound further." Although their tone was light, merely making an observation, Zephyr's tail flickered uneasily. They were walking the line between furthering injury or offending this cat still very much a stranger. The choice still seemed worth offering.

Prey 23, 2021 | Celestine She noticed Zephyr’s interest in her makeshift bandage, and a bemused smile came on her lips. “Never seen a cat with cobweb wrapping before? There are all sorts of ways to treat wounds, though unfortunately, I know about rudimentary treatments. My mate… er, ex-mate now, I suppose, was a healer and he could instantly identify an infection and give you the right herbs to heal it.”
“Sheep fields? What are sheep?” asked Finch, the concern audible in her voice. Were they as big as coyotes or were they small like shrews? She wasn’t sure if she wanted to test fate by walking around those… creatures. She wanted her fur intact.
“I think it’s best to let you go on your own,” she agreed, nodding at her wound. “But will you be able to identify the correct herb?”

[break] | [attr="class","fatecontainer2temp1"] [break][break] [attr="class","fatecontenttemp1"] Ever absorbed in their own curiosity, Zephyr picked apart the words Finch spoke, interest tugged yet again in more than one direction. The most notable was the new information about the calico herself. A former mate, which made sense considering her mention of a kit, which would be difficult to acquire without another party. Zephyr sensed it would not be appropriate to ask for more information. Instead, Zephyr hummed in acknowledgement, pleased that Finch had indulged their inspection. [break][break] "Admittedly, no. You are the first cat I have met who treats their own wounds, aside from keeping them clean of course," Zephyr mused. Their head tilted, considering. "Though I suppose my social circle has been...limited." Zephyr wandered if perhaps they should endeavor to correct that. After all, this meeting of a stranger was...pleasant, injury aside. [break][break] Ears twitching at the question, Zephyr readily jumped into an explanation, contemplation enveloping their features. They hardly seemed to register the calico's concern. "I suppose appearance wise they are like clouds on legs. White and fuzzy, though sometimes their legs and faces are black. Their paws, more accurately hooves, are a bit odd, like they only have two hard toes to walk on." Whiskers twitching, Zephyr muses further. "In behavior and diet they are more like large rabbits, very skittish, and they tend to stick together like traveling birds." [break][break] Finch's agreement to staying behind served to ease Zephyr, the flicker of their tail calming. There were many reasons to be relieved by Finch's response, but mostly Zephyr was just glad a suggestion had not escalated into offense. Pausing only to let their mind map their path and contrast Finch's description with the image they remembered, Zephyr gave a reassuring nod. "I believe so, yes." [break][break] With no further delay, Zephyr turned and bounded upwind toward the sheep fields.

Prey 23, 2021 | Celestine “I see,” said Finch. Back in twolegplace, healer cats weren’t too common, especially given that twoleg healers were the ones who picked cats off the streets. She had a friend once who’d gotten a nasty infection from a rat bite, and who had been scooped up by a twoleg and placed in a cage. She never saw them again. “Well, knowing how to treat your own wounds is a good skill to have. Though, I take it you don’t travel much from your home?”
At least, there was a commonality between Finch and Zephyr: neither were cats who strayed from their homes… at least, that’s how it used to be. “I lived in twolegplace for most of my life, and only recently began traveling with my kit.”
Finch absorbed as much information as she could about the “sheep.” She even tried visualizing their appearance, picturing a cloud of fur with black legs. The description was so comical it almost made her laugh. The added description on their behavior reassured her. Like rabbits, skittish, and likes being in a herd. Should she and Robin ever encounter the sheep, Finch would know to keep a distance but wouldn’t have to fear being hunted down by them. “Interesting. Very… matter-of-factly. Well, good luck getting horsetail. I’ll let you know if you brought back the right herb.”
She slowly moved to her left side, shifting the pressure away from her wounded leg. Hopefully, Zephyr would return with horsetail soon.

[break] | [attr="class","fatecontainer2temp1"] [break][break] [attr="class","fatecontenttemp1"] Home. The word gave Zephyr pause. It had been so familiar once, but what was then a comfort now rung a hollow question. Did they even have a home? Certainly, Delphi made it abundantly clear - insisted, even - that they would always have a home with her. Yet it had never felt like home; nothing there did. They might be able to accept that, then, faced with the question no one had even asked. [break][break] Instead, Zephyr brushed the thought aside. [break][break] "No," they admitted. Truth, and a lie. "But soon," they mused. "I think that will change soon." This stranger did not need to know Zephyr's life, their thoughts. Yet as she spoke even so minimally of her past, of traveling now with her kit, part of Zephyr felt she might listen. Perhaps another time, if they met again. [break][break] With images imprinted in both of their minds, one far more comical than the other, Zephyr had departed. Despite themself, Zephyr was glad for the faster pace they could travel alone. As much as they knew there was no full guarantee they would return successful, the twolegs had always seemed so frantic when a cat was injured. Surely this matter called for urgency. Yet Zephyr's mind had other plans. [break][break] As they slipped into the sheep pasture, a flash of movement caught their eye. Zephyr's attention was swift to follow. Tempest. Logically, Zephyr knew better than to believe. This was surely not their littermate, not in truth. They knew their…condition, how it messed with their perception. Still, their paws moved. There was little helping it — despite how unlikely, this was perhaps their last chance to see. To hope. So, Zephyr followed. [break][break] As expected, their sibling disappeared like a whisper of fog, leaving in their wake only– oh. Not far from Zephyr grew a plant that matched Finch's description. This had to be it, yet part of Zephyr was uncertain. Their gaze drifted toward where they had recalled the plant, watching two sheep separate from the flock. They seemed to be taking turns drinking from the raised stone pond, as though it were not big enough for the two of them. Like guards taking turns. [break][break] Zephyr shook their head, and resolutely began gnawing close to the root. It was best not to waste time doubting. The taste was enough to curl their lip as the stalk tore between their fangs. Not wholly acrid, but unwelcomingly bitter. Staunchly, and with some willpower, Zephyr kept at it. Even if it still evaded them how this stalky plant could help.
