gato • they/them • 30 moons • kittypet • bioPrey Moon. Day 15. Sunhigh. Full Moon. SolarisA large, long haired furball marched up the hill, the short moorland grass tickling their paw pads as they walked. They had just returned to the moor after returning home to their twoleg, so that they wouldn’t worry about their whereabouts too much. It wasn’t unusual for them to be gone for a moon or more, though. It had become a fact of life for their two legged companion, and to be honest with the other cat that lived in the home so hostile towards them they didn’t particularly enjoy returning home. Now, though, they were out in the warm moor air. As Gato crested the hill, they took a deep breath of the nice greenleaf winds. They were blowing in softly across the moors, ruffling his gray tabby fur lightly. Standing there, they gazed around until they noticed a bit of a dip in the moor, catchings their interest. They couldn’t tell what it was covered by from where they stood, so down the hill they marched, intent on seeing what was down there. Soon they came upon it and found it was surrounded by gorse, and from the smell of the tangled branches of yellow flowers there were rabbits living within! They started circling the area, looking for a way in. Finally, they found one and cautiously pushed themselves in, the light from above growing dimmer under all the foliage. Their eyes adjusted to the gloom and they wiggled their way deeper inside until they were standing on what felt and looked like sand. Inside they spotted a rabbit snoozing, but the moment they emerged from the hole in the gorse the rabbit perked up and sprinted towards an exit. Quick as a hawk, Gato sprung after it and chased it out through the exit, catching it just as it got out of the gorse tunnel and ending its life swiftly. Settling down, they began nibbling on the rabbit. It had been a good day for them so far. The only thing that could make it better if if they finally saw another cat and could finally have some company.

Rat He/Him | 61 Moons | Rogue
Prey 15, 2021 | ZeshaAgainst better judgment, he was here in an idyllic, hilly moorland. Wandering for… who knows how many lengths away from the carrionplace. His head was light. He shuddered from perpetual chills. He started coughing fits left and right. He saw the concerned looks of his comrades. Their eyes lit up instantly when they realized he had the same sickness as Patch.
And yet, here he was, in broad daylight, wandering far past his home in search of a healer. His form slumping, his head and tail hung low, and everything was too bright or too loud or too stuffy—it was a wonder he was still alive and standing. But this was urgent. There was no time to dally. Patch’s life depended on him. Even if Rat knew he was too unwell to be this far away from the camp.
His heart leaped at the sight of another cat eating fresh-kill near a gorse tunnel. He rushed over, against better judgment, even if he knew in the back of his head that this cat likely wouldn’t be a healer…
“You,” he said, between his panting breaths. “Do you heal?”

gato • they/them • 30 moons • kittypet • bioPrey Moon. Day 15. Sunhigh. Full Moon. Solaris Gato was simply relaxing, taking small bites of the rabbit as they basked in the afternoon sunshine, the breeze tickling his spine as it wafted across the moors. Though they didn’t think they could actually live out in the open for long periods of time, they had to admit they were impressed by the scenery there. Then, on the horizon, a speck appeared. They perked their ears and awaited the cat that approached. “Nae,” they said, shaking their head. “A dinnae ken healin’, A’m sairy. Back en Twolegplace thae ave Twoleg doctors, but tha’s a far trip, mukker. An ye don’t look too guid.” They noted how the other cat’s frame seemed to hang, head and tail low, and they wondered how this newcomer had even made it up the hills. They certainly needed a doctor, though, so now they felt a determination brimming in their chest to help them. “A’ll help ye look fer a cat ta help ye, tho. Ma name’s Gato. Whit’s yer name? Oh, an ere--” they pushed the rabbit, barely eaten, over to the newcomer. “Ave ta rest o’ this. Ye need it more ‘an a dae. Once ye eat, we’ll be right on our way.”

Rat He/Him | 61 Moons | Rogue
Prey 15, 2021 | Zesha Rat stared at the cat for a few moments in seething anger and frustration at only being able to grasp a fraction of their words, his blood shot eyes bulging out of his skull. If he hadn’t the decency to keep himself together and not explode into a fit of fury like he once did as a youngster, he would have shredded the cat’s ears off. But such an anger was unjustified and frankly, this cat had mad no attempt to incite him.
Instead, he drew in a deep breath, letting the warm air fill his lungs, and then releasing it all with a relieving exhale. His throat was still scratchy from mucus, and his nose too stuffy to smell anything, but he felt less light-headed now. “Excuse me, I have a terrible fever and I’m not thinking straight.”
Cough. Cough. “I’m not looking for a… you say, a ‘twoleg doctor’ for myself. I’m looking for a healer to treat a friend. He’s in a more critical condition than I am, and I don’t have a lot of time.”
Cough. Cough. Cough. His sides ached with each life-draining wheeze. He eyed Gato’s rabbit, his mouth watering at the sight of it. But he shook his head, nudging the rat back to Gato. He didn’t feel right eating before Patch, who was now too physically weak to eat any of the food he gave him. Cough. Cough.
“My name is Rat,” he said. “Thank you for the rabbit, but I am not hungry now. I must find a healer. Would you know where to look?”

gato • they/them • 30 moons • kittypet • bioPrey Moon. Day 15. Sunhigh. Full Moon. Solaris Gato watched the other cat’s face, slowly realizing that their accent had come back full force. Fiddlesticks. Most couldn’t understand the thick Scottish very well, and they had to constantly reign it back in so that they could talk to folks without the other trying to decipher every other word. As they waited for the other cat to find their words, Gato started mentally transitioning back to a more “American” version of speech. They nodded their head in sympathy. The other cat didn’t look good at all, and they were sure if they got closer they could feel the heat radiating off him. Whether they wanted to get closer or not was a different story, since they weren’t quite sure if whatever he had was contagious. “Yer mukker—er, friend—is worse than ye?” the fluffy gray tabby asked, making an effort to speak in a more clear manner. That was no good, though. If his friend was worse off than this, they might die soon. The coughing made Gato wince slightly, the sound of the mucus rattling in Rat’s chest horrible to their ears. They had never seen a cat in such bad condition. Well, except maybe their grandfather when he died, but that wasn’t what they needed to be focused on right now. They needed to root themselves into the present and do something to help this cat! “Is nice to meet ye, Rat,” they said. “Aye wish it ‘twere better circumstances. The last time aye saw another cat ‘twas over yonder, where the trees grow.” They lifted their head and pointed with their muzzle toward the forest. “Tho, we may find others on the way. If yer friend is in as bad ‘o shape as ye say, tho, we best get movin’.” Their rabbit was all but forgotten at this point. They were going on a trip with another cat! How exciting.

Rat He/Him | 61 Moons | Rogue
Prey 15, 2021 | Zesha “He can barely eat, and I can see the color drain from his pelt,” Rat spoke gravely. He burst into another coughing fit, and when he finally stopped, the gravel texture lingered, scraping against the side of his throat. His vision blurred briefly, until he blinked the haze away. His insides felt like they were blazing up like wildfire. Through all of this, Rat could only imagine how much worse the illness overtook Patch’s body. Rat held back a snort. If it were a better circumstance, he doubt he would have met Gato, let alone come this far into the moor, but such was fate, and the alternatives weren’t much better. His stomach churned when Gato suggested heading in the direction of the forest which would be even further from carrionplace. Would he be able to return back in time to save Patch? Wheeze, wheeze, wheeze.
Following behind Gato, he asked, his shoulders tensed, “You’re sure that we’ll come across a healer in the forest? I don’t want to head any further from where I’ve come from if I can help it.”

gato • they/them • 30 moons • kittypet • bioPrey Moon. Day 15. Sunhigh. Full Moon. Solaris Gato frowned, their brow furrowing. That sounded serious. They looked at Rat a bit closer and noticed his pelt didn’t look as glossy as it should, likely from the sickness. They definitely needed to get to a healer, and they were hoping that they’d run across one somewhere between here and the forest so they could get back to wherever Rat’s friend was. It didn’t sound like he had much time to live, from the way Rat spoke. They didn’t break stride when Rat questioned them. “Aye met a cat that dealt wiff plants on me way through tah forest just a moon ago; said they dinnit plan on leavin’ tah forest. Aye figure we kin find ‘er.” The reality was she hadn’t said she wasn’t planning on leaving at all, and they were just trying to reassure Rat. They really didn’t know what they’d find, and they were putting a lot of faith in the traveler’s deities they believed in that they’d come across someone to help. They just hoped that Rat could make it long enough to reach the forest. It might take a day or two since there was a spot—where four oaks were—that was so overgrown they’d need to go around, and it was no telling how much worse Rat would be by then.

Rat He/Him | 61 Moons | Rogue
Prey 15, 2021 | Zesha He clung onto Gato’s words like a stubborn burr, and against his own will or maybe because of the cloudiness fogging up his head, he felt an odd, buzzing feeling—something close to hope?—blossoming in his chest. A healer. In the forest. He raised his head, squinting through bleary, insomniac-ridden eyes at the forest. The healer was somewhere out there.
Then he started wheezing, his heart thundering against his ribs, his wind roughing up his insides. His eyes shut and he bore out the worst of the coughing but clutching on to that feeling his chest, unwilling to let go of it again. When the fit finally stopped, he nodded firmly and he croaked out with a dry, raspy voice to Gato, “We’d better get moving then. Lead the way.”
He kept an eye on the position of the sun in the sky, aware of how swiftly it would slip into darkness. “And hopefully we can cut the trip’s length in half if we move quick.”

gato • they/them • 30 moons • kittypet • bioPrey Moon, Day 15. | Solaris Gato could almost swear they saw a glimmer in Rat’s dull, bleary eyes. They just hoped that the healer, Juniper they believed her name was, happened to still be in the forest. Otherwise they were about to make a trip out there for absolutely no reason, and Rat’s friend would likely die of his illness. Little did the two know that Patch would die anyway, for they would be too late. Their ears pulled back slightly at the wheezing coming from Rat’s chest and throat. Honestly they felt that Rat needed some treatment soon, but the other cat didn’t seem to want to hear it. He was determined to get his friend treatment first. “Al’ight, let’s head off then,” he meowed, taking a moment to decide which way would be fastest to get to the forest and then picking the way straight towards the four big oak trees. Though it was overgrown, they could skirt around the outside of it and make it to the forest that way. “How fas’ canne ye run?” they asked. “If’n we canne go a’ least a fas’ trot, we’ll be there by nightfall.” They didn’t want to push Rat too hard, though they knew that Rat would probably push himself pretty hard to get to the forest by nighttime.

Rat He/Him | 61 Moons | Rogue
Prey 15, 2021 | Zesha "I will run as fast as I need to. Time is not on our side," rasped out Rat. He shook off the residue from another blistering coughing fit. "Just lead the way, and I'll follow. Don't worry about me having to catch up."
His stomach still ached, and of course, he realized that he hadn't ate anything for breakfast. He eyed the piece of fresh-kill Gato had offered him before, and then went over to tear into the meat. It would do Patch no favors if he was operating on an empty stomach, Rat decided. He huffed out, feeling the mucus thick in his throat. He felt himself repeating the same question again and again, but for his own sake, he needed the reassurance. "And you're certain that you know where to go?"
His gaze weighed heavily on Gato. There was no room for error. Even in his ragged state, Rat was capable of holding on his own. The quick flash of his claws unsheathing and sheathing made sure to announce his intentions. Mess with him, and he would do nothing to hold back. "I'm putting an awful amount of trust into you. Don't make me regret this."

gato • they/them • 30 moons • kittypet • bioPrey Moon. Day 15. Sunhigh. Full Moon. Solaris Gato nodded, understanding the urgency of their mission. They didn’t have a lot of time before Rat’s friend might die. It was already going to take them a bit to get to where they needed to be, so they might as well get going. They were about to head off when Rat tore into the fresh-kill they had offered earlier. Good, they thought. He’ll need his strength. Once there was something in Rat’s belly, he turned and asked if Gato was certain about knowing where to go. “Aye, lad,” he said. “The lass’s name was Juniper, iffen I remember right.” They hoped that with the addition of a name that Rat would trust them more. Now they just had to hope that Juniper was still in the forest. Rat made his intentions clear that if this healer wasn’t there, he was probably going to shred Gato. They hoped for their own sake she hadn’t left for any reason. Without another word, they waved their tail for Rat to follow and took off in the direction of four large oak trees. They’d head there first, then skirt around them to the forest beyond. For Rat’s sake, they hoped they weren’t already too late. ((Would you like to move this to the forest?))
