hollow It had been a while, but the woods were not a stranger to Hollow. The trees were as towering as they had ever been, the canopy in full bloom dripping dappled light onto the forest floor. Everything seemed muted here after her time on the open moors. Coming back had felt necessary, though, for a reason Hollow had difficulty explaining to herself. She had grown up here, yes, but her younger years were not something she was particularly nostalgic for. In fact, Hollow tried not to think about that time in her life too much, still somewhat rattled by the final battle between her brothers, even after all these moons. Maybe it was just memories coming back to her from treading the paths they used to tread, when the three of them were all together. The memories seemed especially vivid today, though; she almost thought she caught the scent of one of her brothers on the breeze... Wait.Hollow stopped her meandering walk and paused to scent the air around her. No, it wasn't just her imagination. Mixed in with the other scents of the forest was the familiar scent of another cat—a very familiar scent. Was Chester here, somehow? She darted her gaze around, as if he would emerge from behind one of the trees. She had half-suspected he'd dragged himself off to die somewhere, and for all she knew, maybe he had. Hollow had never had any reason to believe in ghosts until very recently, but now it seemed like she was seeing them everywhere. Feeling very silly and superstitious about the whole thing, Hollow whispered a quiet "Chester?" into the stillness of the forest. She didn't know whether or not she expected—or even wanted—a response. 283 | @cheshire

Chester was many things: a murderer, kin killer, and territorial tom to name a few. But on his rare good days, usually the days following a visit to a certain queen, when he wasn't feeling like a porcupine with a bad attitude, he was one less of those things. A little less prickly and little more willing to talk as opposed to fighting. Now, he lounged in the trees basking in the sunlight. Today, his pleasant nature was on account of a good meal and the nice weather. As far as he wished, he needed nothing else at the moment. He hoped dearly that his peace wouldn't be broken.[break][break]
Fate was never so kind as to allow the cranky feline his peace though. He had opted to ignore all the sounds below and around him, but a certain scent carried with it long forgotten memories and not the good kind. At first, he wrote it off as myth, a mistake in his senses. But a voice so quiet he might have dreamed it called his name. He couldn't fight his suspicions and his jaw opened. The truth was unmistakable. His good mood all but evaporated. He'd hoped to never see this particular feline again. The traitor had abandoned him to die. Now here she was again.[break][break]
Green eyes snapped open to scan the forest below. At first, he found nothing. But as he looked closer, he spotted a familiar form. "Hollow," he said without kindness. Dropping to the ground, he approached the queen. His posture didn't hold any warmth for his former family member. "Hollow," he said again for the feline to hear.

hollow It felt like a bad dream. Though logically she knew that he had just been in a tree—and how odd was it how quickly one forgot the habits of a constant companion once separated, and how quickly those memories returned once reunited?—it was as if he had dropped out of the sky and back into her life, fallen fresh out a nightmare. Her brother, her brother's killer. "Chester," she repeated, a statement this time rather than a question. He still resembled most of the memories she had of him, save for the very last one. A few more scars, but otherwise much the same. "Are you really—" No, stupid question, She chided herself before he could do it for her. "I thought you were dead," she said instead, surprised by the steadiness of her voice. Her whole body felt tense, on edge in a way it hadn't been since she'd last seen Chester. But she had grown more sure of herself in her time away from him and Merry, tougher in a different kind of way then she'd been when the three of them had still been together. And yet, even with this newfound and hard-earned self-assurance, it was hard not to fall back on learned patterns of survival. It didn't help that Chester himself seemed less than friendly. An exaggeration—he seemed downright hostile, even without the filter in Hollow's brain that colored any potential threat with an extra shade of aggression. The sunny forest didn't seem nearly so welcoming now. "I'm glad to see you're okay." Was it true? Hollow wasn't sure, but it never hurt to offer kindness first. Except for when it does. Most of the cats she'd met on her own had shown her that her wariness was often undue, but here was the very origin of that wariness. But if I've changed, maybe he has too. She clung stubbornly to her optimism, even in such unpromising circumstances. 319 | @cheshire

Hollow looked just as remembered. But something about her was different. Her voice was steady and far from the fear he'd expected. Especially considering how he'd greeted her. It surprised him, but hatred still held more ground. She'd abandoned him. That wasn't something he was going to forget any time soon. "Surprise," he said darkly, "I'm not. Disappointed?" Perhaps unfair to little Hollow, but Chester couldn't help but feel wronged by the feline.[break][break]
He drew himself up, staring down at the queen. They might have been family at one point, but now, it wasn't the case. Even in their family, he'd viewed her as an annoyance more than anything. A drain on their already sparse resources. He'd objected from the beginning. Now she was here. The one he'd forgotten.[break][break]
He laughed harshly, "Are you really? I didn't think you cared." After all. "You left me to die." False platitudes, that was all she offered. The prickly tom didn't believe her words for a second. Her actions had already spoken enough. Well Merry, what do you think? This is what happens when you trust another. He might have thought Hollow a bother, but he'd still protected and cared for her. At one point, he'd trusted her. His new scars were proof of just what that got him.

hollow Was she disappointed? Maybe a little bit, honestly. She preferred Chester as a ghost. Although, now that the two were speaking again, Hollow almost found it humorous how accurate her internal voice had been at mimicking her brother in their time apart. So maybe it didn't really make such a big difference. But it's much harder to get killed by a ghost, thought Hollow, well-aware of Chester's murderous tendencies. Not to mention that his posture wasn't giving her any reason to relax. His laugh did not offer any reassurances, either. It was grating enough to spark a flinch from Hollow, who immediately berated herself for the show of weakness. Luckily it was a momentary lapse, and she recovered herself quickly. "Not sure what I could've done, Chester," she retorted, reluctantly casting her thoughts back to their parting day. "You and Merry did a number on each other, and it's not like you ever gave me much training on how to heal wounds." What she had learned from him she left conspicuously absent, along with her own speculation on how a potential rescue attempt might have actually gone; If I'd tried to help him, she thought bitterly, He'd probably have snarled at me for interfering and then died anyway. He hadn't died though, which was the most puzzling part of the whole thing. "How did you survive, anyhow?" she asked. Then, after a moment's thought, "Is Merry alive? Will I find him wandering around the woods, too?"243 | @cheshire

Hollow spoke truthfully. There was nothing the queen could have done, but Chester cared little for the truth. All he cared about was what had happened. Simply put, he'd been abandoned, and his supposed family hadn't lifted a paw to help. He would never acknowledge that he was in the wrong. "You didn't even try," he hissed, "All you did was run." The tom's tail lashed, "Just like always, you were useless to the end. A burden." Always the protected, never the protector. Chester had been the one to drive away the danger with a courage bellied by hatred. Merry had kept them merry whenever the shadows encroached.[break][break]
The tom looked oddly smug as he answered her question, "I was saved by a cat with more kindness than you." He was proud of Stellar and proud of knowing her. The queen was a cat of quality and one he was happy to spend time with. Chester had, after a life of hatred, found someone he welcomed into his heart and his life. Stellar had been his lifesaver in more ways than one.[break][break]
Chester smirked, "Worried about him? Figures, you always liked him more." He'd been the one who insisted they pick up the young Hollow when they were already struggling to get by with just the two of them. He'd been the one to welcome her into their family. Merry had been the fun one. Chester had simply been the grumpy brother. The tom barked a short, sharp laugh, "You wish. No, he's dead and gone. The only thing you'll find is his ghost."

hollow The insults were almost reassuringly familiar, unpleasant though they were. Hollow felt herself falling back into well-tread manners of interaction, reliving the same conversation with only the slightest of variations. She resisted the pull—she was no longer that meek youngster cowed by her elders. "It's hardly my fault you got hurt in the first place," she scoffed. "And whose choice was it to take me in, again?"It had always bothered her, that question. Why had Merry and Chester decided to rescue her? It seemed so out of line with everything else about their time together, and even now the thought of having to care for a younger cat—not to mention a litter of her own—filled Hollow with a distant sort of terror. How much of her brothers was there in her? Certainly she had picked up something from them; her snide remarks sounded like a poor imitation, and she wondered if Chester heard the echo of his own words in hers. His next statement confounded her. Not that someone was kind enough to save Chester; Hollow had met plenty of kind, thoughtful, and considerate cats in her travels, enough to know that compassion beyond what her brothers had shown her did exist. But Chester's smug expression was disconcerting. Had her brother made a friend? Or something more, she wondered, vaguely disgusted. Is there someone out there who loves him?Well, Merry had loved him, perhaps. Not a good kind of love, considering how things ended, but they had stuck together for all that time. Maybe Merry just felt bad for him? No, Hollow had never thought that pity was what held their family together. Pity for her maybe, but certainly not between her brothers. She huffed. "You can't blame me for preferring Merry. He was the nicer of the two of you, after all." Privately, she thought she would have been happier to meet Merry's ghost than Chester alive, although really she probably would've been better off without seeing either of them again in any capacity. The thought of Chester's new companion tugged at her, though, and she couldn't help prying. "But what of this savior of yours? Were you able to hold back your temper long enough to fool them into thinking you were worth saving?" Hollow regretted the words as soon as she'd said them, both because of how cruel they seemed to her and because she was wary of Chester's response. Foolish to risk his ire, but I never did learn my lesson there, she thought resignedly. 417 | @cheshire

Chester looked down his nose at Hollow with a dark pride and growing anger. Now she had teeth enough to turn them on her own. Before, she'd acted as if she'd had all her teeth and claws pulled. It was faint, but his little sister was sounding a bit like him. How that must pain her. Whose choice was it to take her in. Now that was a question. The tom's eyes glimmered darkly, "Merry's," he growled, "Who else?" Who else but Merry would bother to pick up a kit when they could barely care for themselves. His brother had always had a big heart.[break][break]
His eyes were shadowed, "Everyone did and look where his kindness got him. Chased. Beat. Dead." Merry had always wanted to try getting help from other cats. He'd though the more the merrier. But the brothers had never been lucky. The cats they'd met had run them out with tooth and claw. It was worse with the addition of Hollow, especially when she was younger. Two was maybe accepted, but three turned out to be too much. A trio of cats with nothing to offer only took up space and prey. They were unneeded and unwanted.[break][break]
Hollow was curious. Of course, who wouldn't be about someone greater than themself. He smirked, "They're a far better cat than you. They care about me just as I am." Stellar hadn't abandoned him despite his threats and anger. She'd stayed by his side and healed his pain. The queen was the epitome of kindness, unlike his backstabbing family.[break][break]
Chester was quite done with playing nice though. His eyes narrowed, and he took a stalking step towards Hollow, "Your tongue's grown quite sharp in the time we've been apart." His tail lashed deliberately back and forth, "Do you have the claws to back that up?" he hissed. He'd entertained her rebellion long enough. It was high time he paid her back for abandoning him. They said holding grudges was childish, but Chester thought otherwise. It was only right to pay back what was due.

hollow It had been a rhetorical question, but Hollow had fallen out of the habit of expecting Chester to take any offered swipe at his brother. She rolled her eyes. "You can't blame Merry for all your problems, Chester."She wasn't even sure that that's what he was doing, exactly; Merry had been gone for a while now, but Chester still seemed to have a way of redistributing blame. "And kindness didn't kill him. You did." Hollow felt herself bristling, but it needed to be said. Merry certainly hadn't been being kind to Chester when they'd had that final, fatal argument, though she could see how it would be convenient for Chester to think so. He was never responsible, nothing was ever his fault. It was always Merry's, or Hollow's, or the wind's, or— Hollow shook her head, trying not to let Chester's words dig into her too deeply. Hearing about his savior didn't help. Though it didn't make her any angrier, per say, it was perplexing. A better cat than me? Hollow had never given much thought to how good or bad she was; she just was. She worried that she might be too meek or too flighty, too suspicious or too trusting. Never good or bad, though. The idea settled unpleasantly in her gut, a guilty weight. Should Hollow be so surprised that someone was willing to help Chester? Was her sense of compassion so atrophied? Before the spiral of doubt could take firmer hold of her, Chester stepped forward. Hollow's eyes widened, and she retreated hastily, eyes wide. "Again? You want to do this again?" She was frustrated by the note of panic in her voice, terrified by the angry lash of Chester's tail. "Killing one sibling isn't enough?"She chided herself for provoking him further; she didn't actually want to get into a fight with him, in spite of her sharp words. What will make him stop? Fleeing? Maybe, but he could very well be faster than me...An idea occurred to her, and she swallowed, hoping the words wouldn't inflame Chester further. "Will you kill them, too? The one who saved you?" The next part was perhaps the riskiest. "They were kind to you. Where will that get them, once you've stopped believing they care about you?"374 | @cheshire

Chester's eyes darkened and a hiss built up in his throat, "Of course not. Now that he's not around to cause them anymore." Merry had been the source of many headaches when he was still alive. But now that his troublesome brother wasn't around anymore, he'd found his life rather a bit more peaceful. It had been a benefit really, to lose Merry.[break][break]
His little sister was finally right about one thing. Merry's kindness wasn't what had killed him, but it had been one of the reasons leading up to his untimely demise. Chester's eyes held a dark gleam as he spoke, "You're quite right. Kindness didn't kill him." He flexed his claws. Hollow had said it herself. Merry's killer was right here. She'd do better than to provoke him.[break][break]
Seeing Hollow scramble in retreat and hearing the panic in her voice did bring a bit of satisfaction to Chester. Despite all her bravado, she still knew where she stood. "I never considered you my sibling. Just a brat that was more trouble than you were worth." His only family had been his brother, and he was gone. "Even if I did, what does it matter? I've already killed one. What's another?" His question was asked with a dark, gloating smirk. He was throwing her words back at her. Killing one sibling isn't enough? Maybe it wasn't.[break][break]
But Hollow's question stopped him in his tracks. Will you kill them, too? The one who saved you? Of course he wouldn't. Stellar had saved him. She'd cared for him when all others had turned their backs on him. He wouldn't turn his back on her. But ... what if she did? If she betrayed him, who would he have left to trust? His swirling thoughts were brought to a sudden stop. The tom's frustration reaching a boiling point, "What do you know?" he growled angrily.

hollow If Hollow weren't so on edge she might've rolled her eyes. Of course the only reason Merry wasn't the source of Chester's problems was that he was dead. What else? And here Chester was, ready to solve another problem. Her surprise at his agreement was again overshadowed by her fear. It muted all her other emotions, and she felt as if she were buried, succumbing to memories and the ghost who she'd been under Chester and Merry's care rather than the individual she'd come into on her own. Luckily, even her hurt was muted. It wasn't really a surprise that Chester hadn't considered her to truly be family, but even so, the comment stung. It was a bittersweet relief that the sting, like everything else, was outweighed by fear. What does it matter if I'm insulted? Better upset than dead. Although with each dark glance and sharp smirk, Hollow felt that death might not be as far from her as she'd hoped. Hollow noticed with no small amount of relief that her final words seemed to have effected Chester. "Like you've said, you've already killed one. The next one might be me, or it might be them. Merry cared for you, and then you killed him. I cared for you, fool that I was, and you may yet kill me." She scoffed to cover her worry over the truth in her words. "Caring for you doesn't seem to be much in the way protection.""But what do I know?" she echoed, shrugging. "Maybe blood leads to more blood. You killed Merry, so you'll kill me, then you'll kill them, that other someone. Then someone else after that, I suppose. Or maybe mercy leads to mercy. You spare me, so they are spared, and no one else has to die. I can't make that choice for you, Chester."303 | @cheshire

Chester was at a loss for words. He didn't have a biting remark to quip back at her. He didn't know what to say in the face of her words. All he had was a growing frustration and harsh bitterness. Her words were true even if he didn't want them to be or acknowledge them as so. Merry had cared, and he was gone. He snarled, "What. Do. You. Know." Unable to say anything else.[break][break]
"I won't kill them," he hissed, outraged. There was no way he'd kill Stellar. Stellar was important to him in ways Hollow and Merry never had been. But he couldn't help but imagine his claws sinking into her beautiful pelt and his teeth around her neck. If she turned her back on him, would that exact scenario happen? Would he turn his claws on the one who'd given him a second chance? He hoped he wouldn't, but he felt he knew the answer. Just as it had been for Merry. "I won't," he howled, shaking the thought from his mind.[break][break]
His eyes turned on Hollow. His tail lashed with unspeakable anger, but he stilled his claws and halted his advance. He eyed Hollow. His mind was thick with the lives he'd taken. Each one a different scar on his pelt. "Get out," he growled, lips pulled back in a snarl, "Don't come back." This was the one chance he was giving her. He'd still his claws now, but he wouldn't guarantee it a second time.

hollow The emotions Hollow was feeling were hard to pin down. Was it relief? Vindication? She had never seen Chester at a loss for words before, and although it was satisfying to achieve such a feat, it also left her a little wrong-footed. Now what? His repeated words seemed more charged, but oddly enough Hollow didn't feel intimidated by them. Chester somehow seemed both more angry and less prone to violence. Had she finally solved the puzzle, figured out how to get through to him? Or maybe it was just more manipulation; even if he attacked her, even if he killed her, she would still have the high ground. He'd be proving her right. But really, thought Hollow, I can't care too much about getting one over on Chester if I'm dead.Regardless, she'd definitely struck a chord. The thought of hurting his savior seemed to seriously distress Chester, judging by the force of his response. Hollow had never been under the impression that Chester had felt such strong emotions for herself or Merry, and wondered if her guess had been off-base. The thought did not last long, though; the violence coiled in Chester's body was not easy to contain, and Hollow had little doubt that it was waiting to be unleashed on whoever got in his way—even if it was this someone he was so insistent that he wouldn't kill. "You can say that all you like, but actions speak louder than words. And I know what you've done. I know who you are." She maintained eye contact with him, in spite of his lashing tail, his burning eyes. She'd come this far, might as well drive the point home. Chester seemed eager for her to leave, though, and Hollow was honestly quite ready for this reunion to be through with as well. But she'd gone and riled him up, and she didn't want someone innocent taking the brunt of her brother's anger. "I'll go," she conceded. "But before I do, I have one question. Your savior—what is their name?" She didn't expect an easy answer, so she quickly tacked on, "The forest isn't so big, there's a good chance I'll run into them sooner or later. Maybe I'll thank them for saving your life, or maybe I'll curse them. Or maybe they won't be alive either way. But I'd still like to know."389 | @cheshire

Hollow's words stung like a shot in the heart. It wasn't as if he'd made any promises to improve himself, but some part of him was ashamed of who he was. A part of him that he'd never thought existed. A fury swelled in him when she met his eyes and didn't turn away. This wasn't how it was supposed to go. He was the superior one. He was never meant to feel ashamed. Hollow was supposed to have been as meek as she was before. But she wasn't. She was defiant and strong. All he could do was lash his tail and growl in the face of her undeniable truth.[break][break]
Chester's gaze narrowed and his eyes darkened. Before he could question her intentions, she spilled them herself. He still didn't see the point in it, but if answering her question would make her leave, he'd oblige. "Her name's Stellar." Based on Hollow's attitude, his suspicions grew. "If you say anything to her," he growled lowly. If Stellar turned her back on him, he didn't know what he'd do. If she turned her back on him, would he hurt her just as he did everyone else?[break][break]
He didn't need this. Whatever this was. Hollow was going against the script. He needed her out. He needed her gone. "I've answered your question. Now leave!" he demanded, standing tall. Hollow was no longer the Hollow he knew, and he definitely didn't like it.

hollow Hollow shrugged. "Asked and answered, I guess."She had never met a Stellar before in her travels, and she didn't know if she would, especially if she ended up spending even less time in the forest. Maybe her words might offer some protection to her brother's mysterious savior, although Hollow halfheartedly hoped she'd never find out one way or another. She wasn't that desperate for closure. "I can't think of anything I could say that would outweigh your actions," Hollow said, trying to keep her voice light. She thought she was in the clear now, but you never knew, with Chester; better to maintain her thin veneer of calm until she was by herself again. "But like I said, I might thank her. It was good to see you again, Chester, in a way." This last bit was not strictly true, but she was hopeful that it might be, one day. In the future, when the scars were a little more healed and the terror a little less present. "Fair's fair, though. You did answer, so I'll be on my way." Hollow paused, not sure how to leave things. How did one say goodbye—maybe forever—to one's brother after they killed your other brother and then surprised you by coming back to life and then threatened to kill you also? This was not a situation Hollow had found herself in before, and she was somewhat wrong-footed by the unique scenario. Most of her conversational prowess relied on interacting with strangers via small-talk, not with presumed-dead family members. She settled for a stilted "Good luck," and turned to leave, not letting the tension drain out of her entirely until she was sure she was alone again. 281 | @cheshire
