The early morning light lit the forest, giving everything a golden thread. A single bird, a robin, was hopping around on the ground, searching for it's own breakfast. It was completely unaware of the cat stalking it. Dapple pulled herself slowly, step by step by step. She kept her eyes on it, not letting anything else distract her, and finally deemed herself ready.
A leap and... gotcha! Dapple had the robin at her paws, neck broken and song forever silenced. Silently thanking the robin's spirit, Dapple lifted the bird by it's neck and turned back toward the current den she shared with her family, an old abandoned fox hole they'd had to dig out for room.
The thought of them filled her with warmth that had nothing to do with the sunshine. Her mate and her kits were more than she'd ever thought she'd have, but she was glad to have them. Would they be awake already and wondering where she was? She'd gone out for an early hunt while they were still sleeping...

Birch || he/him || 8 moons Birch woke slowly, ensconced in the warmth of his littermates. It was still early, but something felt off. As he peeled his eyes open, still fuzzy with sleep, he tried to pinpoint what was wrong.
He could feel the sturdy shape of Mist curled under him, her breath slow and even with sleep. Soot lay draped across his flank, face twitching as he dreamed. Their father was nearby too, though Birch couldn’t tell if he was awake or not yet. Their mother was...
Gone!
Sleepiness cleared from Birch’s head in an instant, and he sat up sharply, sending Soot sliding off him and into the moss that lined their nest. The cream tom’s gaze swivelled wildly, searching for signs of his absent mother.

[googlefont="Courgette"] cedar | he.him | love tethers the souls It wasn't rare that the calls of the birds and sun kissed ground welcomed the family before Cedar. His late night patrols often got him home early in the morning before the dew had time to form on leaves. It was how he felt safe, how he could guarantee the safety of his children and his life. The breeze carried her scent as she returned from the hunt which woke the snoring tom. His eyes squinted against the sun as he looked around.
"Right where I left it all."
The thought made him smile and he let out a large yawn afterwards. A few joints popped at the wear he had already put into his jaw. Not extremely old, but many fights as a youngster had left him with many regrets. "My love," he cooed as he stretched out of their makeshift den before he could land his eyes on her. When he did, his grin widened. Always taken aback by the beauty in his life - though it may have not started this way.
"I see you have been successful this morning," he meowed in between the grooming of her shoulder, "I will run out this morning myself and catch you more. Mustn't let you go hungry." He paused in his affection and turned to his sun who had also came up to the two. Pride flickered into his gaze with how much Birch was becoming an amazing tom. It was something Cedar worried about as he had not had a role model of his own. His own father may have as well kicked him to the curb. This would not happen with his children.
"Birch," he purred, "What are your plans for the day?"

He was peacefully dreaming about laying on a rock in the sun having found the perfect spot to gaze into a beautiful forest. It was peaceful for awhile as he just dozed. Of course, then he started slipping off the rock and the sudden movement of him falling caused him to jump up wide eyed, fear pulsing through his veins as he tries to process the fact that he was no longer falling. It took him a moment to pull himself out of that shock but when he did he noticed Birch padding away from the pile toward their mother who was walking into the den.
Soot breathed a sigh of relief and shook himself to fight off the sleepiness and then trot after his brother to nudge him affectionately. "Give a tom a little warning the next time you decide to wake him up so abruptly, huh?" He snickered and flicked his tail in amusement as he sniffled at Dapple's bird. "Ohhh good catch, mother!" He said, genuinely impressed.
To be honest, Soot loved encouraging and teasing his family members. It was how he showed love and affection. He wanted to build them up and see them smile. THAT was his joy during the day. If he'd made each of them smile at least once during the day, he was a happy bug. Just... He hoped it didn't prompt his father to mention something about his own hunting technique. Definitely not his favorite subject.
