Prey 2, 2021 | Kaeldra Her ear twitched in the opposite direction of Ducky’s tail, and she angled her head so he could see her seething gaze, exaggerated to comedic effect. Not more of this again! She rolled her eyes at her brother’s dumb comments about being a fish, which she opted not to dignify with a verbal response. She ignored it and moved on.
When Ducky started talking about the marsh, she shuddered at the memory. Too muddy, and too sketchy and shadowy there. What she wouldn’t give to swim in a real body of water, and not some sad, shallow puddles in the middle of a coniferous forest.
“I thought you said you were part fish? Though, I guess that’s if we discount the one time we found a fish at the marsh,” she said, referencing the time they tried fishing but only found a tiny minnow, barely larger than a single claw. “I definitely won’t miss the taste of lizards though.”
She stuck out her tongue in disgust.
“And hopefully, we’ll find some water soon.”

Ducky || he/him || 23 moons Ducky shrugged, unbothered by Loon’s comment.
“Hey, it’s a fish-eat-fish world out there. You know, survival of the fish-est,” he grinned, unable to stifle his laughter at his own joke. “You’re right, though. Some of those lizards were nasty. If I never eat one again, it’ll be too soon.”
As they walked along, he gently nudged his sister’s shoulder.
“Don’t worry! It can’t all be hot, humid forest.” At least, he hoped not. He missed swimming. At least under the cover of the trees, the heat was a little more bearable, but he couldn’t wait to feel the cool water on his overheated skin. “We just gotta keep looking! Like… over here!”
With the treacherous slopes of the ravine left behind them, Ducky was once again comfortable enough to bound forward a couple of fox-lengths, hardly watching where he put his paws. He pushed through the undergrowth, snagging his pelt on a bramble before shaking himself free. He could swear he smelled water now. He just hoped Loon would believe him after all his nonsense about it earlier.

Prey 2, 2021 | Kaeldra Loon breathed out with the last ounce of patience left in her. She thwacked the tip of her tail against Ducky’s nose, rolling her eyes. “Okay, okay, I think that’s enough from you. No more puns, Ducky. Let’s just get moving.”
She kept at her steady pace, staying behind Ducky about a few tail-lengths away. Her eyes and ears were open to the world around them, listening for the slightest rustle of branches, watching for the briefest flicker of movement. Waiting for the moment something would come out from nowhere and attack. But Loon would be ready.
Ducky tripped and stumbled a few times, and Loon nearly jumped over to him. But every time, he picked himself up and kept walking, shaking off his pelt like he was freeing the droplets from his pelt. And then he padded on as if nothing happened. It was infuriating.
“Over where?” She asked, voice thick with doubt, though her attention was elsewhere. She scanned the area for about the third time, trying to spot a predator lurking in their midst.
