Shellspots || Queen || 38 moons Shellspots padded contentedly through the trees behind Flare as he led her toward his old friend. She had been this way a pawful of times, but it was clear that the orange tom was at home in these woods, familiar with it in a way she could only hope to be someday. It was too far from their camp to visit regularly, but as an occasional excursion it had its good points.
The silver queen hoped that Noctus would join them as well; if his stories were anything to go by, the black tom would be a valuable addition to their growing Clan. Another set of experienced paws never hurt, especially now that they had effectively doubled their number of apprentices in the past quarter-moon. She had to admit, she’d been surprised when Flare had shown up with three younger siblings instead of full grown adults, but she couldn’t deny that they would be a worthy investment of time. It was just getting there. For now, they had left the rambunctious group with Flare’s parents, as well as an exhausted Miku and Pandora. She hoped they would be fine until the two got back.
Ahead of her, Flare slowed, and she twitched her whiskers in curiosity. Had he picked up his friend’s scent? She couldn’t catch any cat scents, but perhaps she had missed it, being unfamiliar. Then he mentioned that he wasn’t entirely sure where Noctus would be, and even that he might be in Twolegplace, of all places.
“Why in StarClan’s name would he be in Twolegplace?” She tried not to let too much shock seep into her tone. While they definitely needed more cats for their Clan, she couldn’t imagine what value a kittypet would bring. “Didn’t you say he was a forest cat, like the rest of us?”

Flare blinked at the shock in Shellspots's voice and stance. He didn't think it warranted THAT much surprise. It's not like he didn't mention it on purpose! He just. Hadn't thought it would be important. "Well, yeah. He's as forest as you and I. But his mate's a kittypet, as are their kits. Not for lack of trying from some of them, that is! Lily is about Gale's age and frankly she's about as troublesome. I'm kind of terrified of the mischief they'd get up to if they ever met. And I say that with affection for the both of them."
His whiskers twitched in thought of the two younglings, but he shook the thought out of his head. If all went well, they'd be meeting soon enough, and it wouldn't do to accidentally turn Shellspots against Lily before they'd even met! "Anyway. Normally Noctus doesn't like to go too far from Twolegplace, but there are occasions when he ventures further! Like when I met him and when the foxes attacked. And I figure if HE doesn't want to join, he can spread the word to other cats in Twolegplace too. My presence alone is proof of the power of word of mouth, isn't it? You met Miku, Miku told you about me, I brought my family, so on and so forth."

Shellspots || Queen || 38 moons Shellspots stayed silent for a long moment, digesting this new information. While she had been very keen to meet Flare’s friend – the cat who had saved his life, no less – knowing that his mate and kits were all kittypets was a bit concerning. Unless they were able to persuade the whole family into joining the Clan, (which she thought was unlikely, given that kittypets were usually preoccupied with their own comfort) how could she be sure of their loyalty to the Clan? Flare only strengthened that notion when he mentioned that the other tom didn’t like to venture too far from Twolegplace.
However… He was right in that Noctus could at the very least spread the word of RiverClan, in hopes of attracting more cats that way. And perhaps she’d be surprised, and the tom wouldn’t be as hesitant to leave his mate and kits as she expected. She’d wait and see him with her own eyes first, before making any judgments.
“That’s true,” she agreed, nodding. “Every cat we can get to even pass on the news of RiverClan is valuable. And perhaps we can recruit his kits, if they’re so eager. You know I’ve been saying we need more apprentices,” She joked, trying to brush off her earlier concern.
She was about to continue, to say that they had plenty of time before Flare’s parents would be tracking them down, when she inhaled and this time she did pick up another cat scent. Her head swivelled in the direction it came from, ears pricked.
“Is that him?” She murmured under her breath to Flare. While she wasn’t concerned about a potential attack, she preferred to be prepared if that were the case.

Noctus || Tom || 33 moons Noctus padded quietly through the forest, jaws open and tasting the air for prey. He was hoping to find something nice he could take back to his kits; they had been complaining that Flare hadn’t come by to teach them anything new for a few sunrises. He had tried to explain to them that Flare was an adult cat with his own family to take care of, but they were insistent that they needed more battle lessons right now, actually. If all went well, he’d be able to appease them for a bit longer with a fat squirrel or tasty vole while the ginger tom was busy.
As if thinking about his friend had summoned him, Noctus suddenly caught Flare’s scent rather than any prey. It had been some time since he’d seen him, as well, and he wondered how his little family was getting on. As he followed the scent, he realized he could hear Flare’s voice, along with another cat’s. They spoke in hushed tones, and he couldn’t make out what they were saying.
He stepped out of the undergrowth into view of them both, and saw that Flare’s companion was a pretty silver she-cat. His eyes widened a bit, then he smiled. Had Flare finally found himself a mate?
“Flare! I was just listening to Lily complain that you haven’t been teaching her how to attack invaders lately. How have you been?” His eyes shifted again to the silver she-cat. She held herself with dignity, head high and unafraid as she met Noctus’ gaze evenly. “And who’s your friend?”

At first, Shellspots was quiet. Almost worryingly so. She wasn't looking at him, but she also didn't seem to be looking at anything in specific. After too long for comfort, she finally nodded. Flare relaxed as she cracked a joke about needing more apprentices. He grinned at her in response. "Apprentices eventually become warriors who eventually have kits of their own who become apprentices and so on and so forth. Don't you wanna be a grandmother before your muzzle goes gray? Well, grayer?"
That was NOT a shot at her age, being that she was younger than Flare's own parents. That was a shot at her pelt being gray. Would he tell her that if she mocked offense? No, no he would not. He would have piled it on but he smelled cat scent at the same time as Shellspots. Unlike her though, the smell was familiar to him, and he turned in the direction of the black form already approaching with a smile and his tail held high.
Flare laughed lightly at Noctus talking about Lily's complaints. "Oh, sincerest apologies to the little princess." he meowed sarcastically, bowing his head just so. "However, I think the gift I bring her highness will well make up for my absence. This," he waved his paw toward Shellspots, making the gesture as grand as the rest of his little act, "is Shellspots. Leader of the newly formed RiverClan. We bring glad tidings to the royal family and humbly request their presence amongst our ranks."

Shellspots || Queen || 38 moons Shellspots scoffed playfully at Flare’s comment about her muzzle going gray, flicking her tail in amusement.
“As much as I’d love grandkits someday, I think it’ll be many moons before I have to worry about that. Or at least I hope so. If Minnowpaw told me tomorrow she was expecting kits I think I’d faint,” she laughed. In truth, she couldn’t imagine her daughter settling into motherhood so soon, even once she was old enough to be thinking about kits of her own. But Flare was right, and that day when she did find some cat to start her own family with would arrive sooner than Shellspots would probably like. Even now she could scarcely believe that they were already seven moons old, and now fully fledged apprentices like she’d always dreamed.
Then a cat she could only presume was Noctus stepped from the bushes, and she listened with interest as he and Flare chatted. She hadn’t been aware Flare had been training his friend’s kits. Perhaps they would have more merit than she had expected from kittypets. She rolled her eyes in amusement as the ginger tom introduced her with a flourish, but couldn’t help herself from puffing her chest out just a tiny bit with pride at the title of leader.
“It’s lovely to meet you, Noctus. I’ve heard much about you,” she said, smiling. She wondered if perhaps it was a mistake to let Flare extend the invitation to Noctus and his family so soon, but she supposed beggars couldn’t be choosers when it came to building a Clan from the ground up.

Noctus || Tom || 33 moons It took a moment for Flare’s words to fully sink in, and he blinked as the meaning registered. He had heard bits and pieces of this strange she-cat that was apparently trying to recreate the Clans (he hadn’t told Lily, fearful it would give her too many ideas), but he didn’t think she would actually be able to do it. And yet here she was.
Noctus wasn’t sure how he felt about the whole thing. One the one paw, the young cat inside him that had set out for adventure so many moons ago was thrilled to see a story from his kithood coming to life before his eyes. That cat yowled at him to take this opportunity and run with it, as far as it would take him. But he was older now, and had kits to think about. As much as he knew Lily and Bluebell and perhaps even Zinnia and Basil would love to be part of a Clan, he wanted them to stay safe with their Twolegs, like their mother was.
Outwardly, he grinned and gave a playful bow as he went along with the royalty gag.
“Only good things, I hope,” he replied to Shellspots, wondering what exactly Flare had told her about him. His eyes slid back to the ginger tom, hoping he wouldn’t offend with his next words.
“Much as I appreciate the offer, I’m not sure I can accept. Having you train them was one thing, but living in the wild away from their Twolegs and away from their mother… I don’t know if they could handle that.” His words prompted a frown from Shellspots.
Or is it you that can’t handle it? A voice in the back of Noctus’ mind whispered to him. He shook it off, pushing the thought away. It was for their own good, their own safety.
