Personality
Ever since her sister Cherry suffered the accident that left her crippled, Echo's life has revolved around looking after her. Because this accident happened when they were so young, Echo has essentially been born into the duty of protecting her. It didn't help matters that her mother went missing soon after, and that their father had died on the Thunderpath. For the first several moons of her life, Echo was an excellent guardian, earnestly hunting for enough food for the both of them, fetching moss to line not only her own den but Cherry's as well. Fortunately they rarely came across trouble, but when it arrived, she fought it off with conviction.
Having only had a short time to be taught how to look after Cherry from her parents before they disappeared, she wasn't entirely sure how best to do so. This means that she can be very overprotective, potentially holding Cherry back from reaching her potential. It wasn't that she was being overprotective out of spite or malice, at least not at first. She genuinely wasn't sure just how much protection she really needed.
Her motives changed when she was 21 moons old and met Blaze, a strong, intelligent and handsome loner. She instantly fell in love with his quick wit and refined abilities of strength and agility, and struggled to balance spending time with him and protecting her sister. After about a moon of seeing each other, Blaze told her he wanted to be with her forever, and wanted to move to a faraway land, as he was bored of the monotony of the forests. When she refused in order to protect Cherry, he became belligerent and attacked her, claiming that she never loved him and had wasted his time.
After this encounter she grew very vindictive towards Cherry, still protecting her but in a maliciously overbearing way. She often voiced her displeasure at needing to cater to her every need when she could have been out living life. She also sought out ways to keep Cherry down; she fed her, but only the scrawniest mice; she gathered moss, but moss that was slightly damp and caused Cherry's already mangled joints to ache in the morning. While Cherry was kept down, Echo would traipse off to meet nearby toms. She had grown tired of Cherry being the focal point of her life, and was determined to live a satisfying romantic life.

History
Echo and Cherry were born to Sage and Dusty in a grove near the Twolegplace. They were very close siblings for the first couple moons of their lives, spending their first days beyond their camp racing through the forest. Echo would always beat Cherry, which frustrated Cherry to no end. Desperate to find something she was better than her sister at, she challenged Echo to a tree jumping competition. For her part, Echo was not convinced this was a good idea and warned Cherry against it. Determined, and ignoring her sister, Cherry climbed a tall oak, wound up and took a leap.
Those few seconds would become seared into Echo's memory. It felt like an eternity that Cherry was airborne, flying several taillengths from one branch to the next. Miraculously, she landed the jump. She'd gone from a thick, aged branch that could have supported the entire family and more, to a decayed stick that creaked under her weight alone. Cherry seemed to recognize the predicament she had landed herself in, staring wide-eyed at Echo, begging her to know how to approach the situation. Echo was dumbfounded, unable to provide any guidance. In desperation, Cherry tried to jump away from the frail twig. As she lowered her haunches in preparation, the tree groaned and the branch detached. Cherry fell awkwardly, landing with a thud. She'd landed on uneven ground, her right side elevated from her left. Rolling over and wincing with every slight adjustment, she revealed two fractured legs on her right side.
Echo would help her now crippled sister back to the camp, where her parents would do their best to create a splint for both legs. Not being skilled medicine cats, they weren't able to produce anything that would properly heal them. Desperate to find help for their daughter, Sage went into the Twolegplace in hopes that a kittypet might be privy to advanced healing techniques, while Dusty remained with Echo and Cherry. On one of these days, the family watched in horror as a monster stalked Sage, and twolegs eventually caught her and brought her into the belly of the monster. Sage was never seen or heard from again, leaving Dusty to raise the two kits.
He did an admirable job, hunting for and protecting them from danger. Because they lived so close to Twolegplace, there wasn't much food to be found right by their camp, so Dusty had to cross the Thunderpath often to hunt. He was always careful, but one day, he wasn't careful enough. A monster came screeching down the Thunderpath, rounding a corner as Dusty crossed. He was hit, and instantly killed. Echo and Cherry didn't see it happen, but they heard the impact and knew what had happened when he didn't return.
This tragedy left Echo as Cherry's sole caretaker.
