Fire 16, 2021 | CelestineA few days had passed since Roots told Sunchaser and Fieldflight about their journey. The pair were ecstatic to see Roots return—Fieldflight was all over Roots, excitement screaming from their expression, and Sunchaser actually smiled. It was more affection than they were prepared for, it was like a sheer wall of rocks tumbled after them. Nonetheless, a contentedness rested in their heart. They loved being on a journey, but it was here, here in this place, that was their home.
It was home.
Roots retold their experience at the Moonstone to them, and they watched as they leaned in, closer and closer. Memories were shared like fresh-kill, and stories were offered freely. It was the most they’d heard Sunchaser or Fieldflight talk about their past. Roots listened in, an entranced moth hovering around a flame. But there was something strange about the way they spoke of their old lives. Even by the end of the reminiscing, they could not place a claw on where the oddness came from. There was a stiltedness and a frown over supposedly happy memories.
The mystery gnawed and nagged at it, even when it was supposed to be concentrated on hunting. After catching a meal, it padded back home, where the tunnels were. But, a few tail-lengths away, a silhouette of a cat crested a hilltop, staring off into a space, looking for someone or something that wasn’t there.
