The scarred tom paced the edges of the plains. In the past, this might have been the last place he'd have considered, but with two kits under his care, it wasn't as simple to keep them all afloat. In his search for the best home for him, Stone and Pepper, this was the last place on his list to search. He'd put it off for so long since they were home to a "clan." RiverClan? He thought that was what that she-cat had said several moons ago.[break][break]
Crouching, he stared at the landscape. Every fiber in his being told him not to go any further. This was the territory of not only one cat but a whole clan. Whatever that entailed. It would be a bad idea to get caught, hurt and chased away. He shuddered at the thought. So many cats living together in one place. How did they tolerate each other? How did no one get hurt or get chased off? It felt so wrong to Chester. Even so, a clan might be the best bet for Stone and Pepper.[break][break]
Reaching out a paw, he took a hesitant step forward only to pull it back as if he'd been shocked. The scent of all those cats caused a war between his instincts to flee and his desire to help his kits. He'd try again. He had to.

By now, the border patrol was catching on to the other RiverClan warriors. Prowl smiled. Only two days ago, Bayou discovered an intruder lurking on their territory on one of these patrols. The stranger’s presence brought the possibility of a new recruit or a contest over territory. But either way, it was a chance to assert RiverClan’s territory. He eyed the forest, located just beyond the hills of the plain, where those pesky “ThunderClan” warriors now resided. He scarcely mentioned his opinions of the split to others, but he was glad they left.
Flare’s irrational arguments with Shellspots were quite the sore spectacle. Frankly, they were a waste of time. The camp was much quieter without him around, though RiverClan was left with half of what they once had. But if Flare’s tantrum was so explosive that it convinced other cats to leave RiverClan, so be it. He would rather stay among worthy warriors like Shellspots.
Yet, with numbers depleted, the issue of finding more recruits became apparent, something which could be addressed through patrol. As he crested a hill, he noticed a cat on the other side of the river, edging the plain. Sloping down, he hurried across the stepping stones with practiced dexterity, and emerged on the other sides. He approached the stranger from the bush, laying his fur low against the ground as he crept among undergrowth. When he was about a tail-length away, he slowly stepped out of ferns, and the fronds parted to the side.
“What is your business here?” Prowl asked with narrowed eyes.

Every fiber in his being thrummed with anxiety. This wasn't like him. Or, this wasn't like the old him. The old Chester would never have even considered approaching other cats deliberately. Nor would he have picked up Stone and Pepper. But he wasn't that cat anymore. That was what he wanted to believe. He had to hope that, somewhere along his twisted path, he was going in the right direction.[break][break]
Tense as he was, he sprang to his feet, back arched, when the voice reached him. A dark-furred feline was the source of the noise. This was, presumably, what he'd come to look for, but it didn't make him feel any better. But he had to get used to it. Clan life might be the best choice for his family, and clans meant other cats. He pulled himself into a sitting position. His claws and his fangs were no longer his first options.[break][break]
"I heard a Riverclan lived here." He spoke with a wavering confidence. This one didn't seem very friendly, but he wouldn't lash out anymore. He would do better. "Do you know them?" Chester had assumed they were a Riverclan cat at first. Who else would be so close to their territory. But he didn't want to assume. For all he knew, this tom might have nothing to do with the clan.
