PERSONALITY;
Burnet is an outgoing cat who is quick to make friends and offer help. He is very family-oriented; being left alone for too long feels downright unnatural to him. He has had a very stable life for a feral cat, as he stayed with his family much longer than is typical. Therefore, he is very set in his routines, hates unexpected changes, and can be quite stubborn. He takes pride in providing for his sister and helping strangers, though he doesn't take failure very well. He gets quite sensitive when his ego is bruised.
HISTORY;
Burnet was born to Cormorant and Lila along with his two sisters. Due to some complications, one of his sisters was stillborn, and Lila passed shortly after kitting. Cormorant came from a long line of cats who studied herb lore, but despite his medical knowledge, he was unable to save them.
He named their kits after herbs: Burnet, Juniper, and Holly. He briefly mourned Lila and Holly, then he wondered how to save Burnet and Juniper.
The only way his remaining family would survive was if he could find a way to nurse his kits. He didn't know any nursing queens, but luckily, Lila was a kittypet. Twolegs were known to treat their kittypets with strange medicines. Perhaps they had some way to care for newborns?
Cormorant had no other option. He desperately carried his two kits to her housefolk's nest, and as luck would have it, one of the twolegs took them in. She had seen Cormorant in their garden before and must have understood Lila's fate.
Under the care of Lila's housefolk, Burnet and Juniper quickly gained their strength. Cormorant stayed with them to ensure their safety.
Though Cormorant was living with the housefolk, he was no kittypet. He was thankful that his kits had survived long enough to be weaned, but he could not remain in a twoleg nest forever. He spent much of his time outdoors, hunting and sniffing out herbs. Once Burnet and Juniper were old enough, he started bringing them fresh prey to eat and taking them outside for hunting and herb lore lessons.
Burnet caught on to hunting instinctively, but he never had the mind for memorizing herb purposes and preparations. Juniper was much more suited to studying herbs. Once that was apparent, Cormorant focused Burnet's training on hunting and fighting practice, and Juniper's training on herb lore.
Before long, they had completed some basic lessons and were strong enough to travel. Cormorant presented both of his kits with a choice. They could come to live with him in the wild, or they could stay with the housefolk. Cormorant would still visit them if they chose to remain kittypets, but he needed to return to the wild.
Burnet was conflicted. He had nothing but happy memories of life with his housefolk, but he was also curious about life in the wild. He loved running outside chasing birds, and he much preferred the taste of fresh prey to his kittypet food. Most of all, he did not want to be separated from his father and sister.
It was decided, and the three cats set out from the twoleg nest early the next morning. They settled in a hollow tree in a marshy pine forest.
As the moons went on, Burnet grew into a large, strong tom cat. He started winning sparring matches against his father and catching plenty of prey for both him and Juniper. Juniper rarely hunted, but she was truly gifted with herbs. Anytime someone in their family and an ache or a cough, she had a solution for it.
They lived peacefully for a while, but eventually, Cormorant's health started to fade. He started to spend most of his time at the den, resting, helping Juniper, and sharing stories.
Then, that leaf-bare, the family caught greencough. Burnet recovered easily, but Cormorant took a turn for the worse. Juniper did everything she could to give him a fighting chance, but he was old and weak.
Cormorant passed in his sleep. His children buried him, mourned him, and decided they must move on. After some searching, they settled in an abandoned fox den nearby.
Life wasn't the same without Cormorant around. He had been a permanent fixture in Burnet's life, but he was thankful that he had lived long enough to pass everything he knew on to himself and his sister. Burnet vowed to continue protecting his sister and live a life that would make his father proud.
Slowly but surely, the two siblings settled into life in their new home.
Life was fairly uneventful, until Burnet happened across a sick cat on his morning hunt. Eager to help them, he suggested that they visit his sister Juniper at their den. The cat followed him home, and Juniper agreed to provide her some herbs for her cough. The cat was cured, and she brought back some feathers for their nest as thanks.
Soon, word spread that there was a healer cat in the pine forest. They started to receive more visitors, and Juniper would treat them as long as they provided some sort of gift as thanks. Burnet met some new friends through all these visitors, but he loyally remained with Juniper. He handled most of the hunting and chased off the rare predator.
As he has gotten older, he has started to slow down a bit, but he is still in good health. He sometimes regrets not starting a family of his own and passing along Cormorant's traditions. However, he is happy living with his sister and helping the local cats where he can. Perhaps that is the only legacy he needs.
