Eyes blinking open to an unfamiliar landscape was becoming more and more familiar to Zephyr. Five days. It had been five days since they had decided to move on from their vigil back home, and the lack of familiarity had become far less unnerving. Now as Zephyr gazed up at unfamiliar foliage and parted their maw to sample unfamiliar scents, the mink greeted them with curiosity. But they were unnerved. Not by the where, but by the age old question of how.

'How did I get here?'

The question received its usual half-answer. Heaving upright, Zephyr was met with a wave of dizziness, choking back nausea as they stabilized. Around them their vision spun and they squinted, aware of their pounding heart despite seeming as though they had just awoken from a nap. No, they knew better. Disoriented and confused or not, they were not new to this feeling.

Even so, instinct had Zephyr stumbling to their paws. It was too open here. Staggering slightly, the mink lashed their tail in an attempt at balance, but barely made it a few steps to some more enclosed foliage before flopping down with a sigh. The sound of nearby water was pounding through Zephyr's skull. They resisted the urge to press their forepaws over their ears. Instead, the feline rested their chin upon that snowy fur and swiveled their ears in attempt to get their bearings. To their left, a river. Slightly up ahead, toward the right...pawsteps?

Brow furrowing slightly, Zephyr pinned an ear toward the noise despite the thrumming of their head, tail twitching and whiskers tilting forward. A scent approached from upwind, accompanying the light paw-falls they had caught. Feline, undoubtedly, and not making much effort to disguise their presence. Close enough, Zephyr supposed, to have heard their stumbling and the groan they awoke with. Groggily lifting their head again, Zephyr blinked to clear their vision. This side of their...episodes, it was safest to assume anyone who approached was real.

Shellspots || she/her || 43 moons
Shellspots hared away from the Beech Copse, eager to put some space between herself and her deputy. They’d had another argument, embarrassingly enough, and in front of several apprentices no less. It had ended at a bit of an impasse, though she had held a promise in her steely gaze that the discussion was not over and would be continued at a later time, when they had fewer impressionable eyes on them.
In the meantime, he would be taking the apprentices back to camp and she would be heading to the river to cool her head, both literally and figuratively. As she approached the rushing water, she heard something blundering about in the reeds, and thought she caught a soft groan. Her footsteps slowed, and she scented the air, ire for the flame-coloured tom set aside in favour of keen attention to her surroundings.
It didn’t take long for her to spot the mass of fur collapsed several fox-lengths from the river, their creamy coat standing out amidst the green of the foliage. As she drew closer, she could see that their head was lifted, ears angled toward her in relaxed interest. Otherwise they seemed content to continue laying sprawled on the ground.
“Hello,” she said, a bit baffled but doing her best to cover it with cool professionalism. “My name is Shellspots. Might I ask who you are?”

The stranger who approached was a star-speckled sky in reverse, brilliantly silver. Slighter than themself, but with presence and purpose. If alarmed or confused as anyone would be at seeing a stranger sprawled amidst the foliage, breaths still a little irregular, she did little to show it. Only a hint of bewilderment in that first word of greeting snuck through.

Gaze and mind and body still adjusting, returning to itself, Zephyr let the introduction continue uninterrupted. Their ears pricked and moved, clearly listening, but there hung a pause before they responded. Not for any unwillingness to answer.

"Zephyr," they offered. Their mind pondered the name of the other, but Zephyr made no comment on its oddness. There was such a variety of names, after all, and who were they to judge? No, it was the air it was spoken with. A subtle weight, as though it held more importance than simply something to be called by. The lingering disorientation outweighed Zephyr's usual curiosity.

"My apologies," they added lightly, "if I caused any disturbance." A sincere apology, though carrying an almost questioning undertone.

Well, they seemed polite enough. Strange, perhaps, but Shellspots had met plenty more unpleasant cats to speak with. It almost seemed like they were slightly winded, as if they had been running and were taking a breather. Maybe they had been on the run from something unpleasant, too, she thought wryly.
“Not at all, I simply wasn’t expecting to find anyone on our territory,” she explained. Now that word of RiverClan had begun to spread, she found that she stumbled upon fewer cats close to camp. Those that did enter their territory came with purpose, and would seek her Clan members out.
“It’s a pleasure to meet you, Zephyr. You’re welcome to stay for a while if you’d like. What brings you to our side of the river?”
While she didn’t mind visitors – each cat could be a potential Clanmate, after all – she did like to be aware of goings on within their borders.

Our territory. The words roused some interest in Zephyr, mind clearing enough for them to ponder. Had they passed a boundary unaware, or was this land simply claimed by word? It would not be the first time that Zephyr's…condition had left time gaps they could not fill; nor would it be the last.

Shaking that particular thought, Zephyr dipped their head. “A pleasure indeed. And thank you, for the offer,” Zephyr said, finally drawing themself up into a sit. The world did not spin again, stars be thanked, but they were in no hurry to push it further. Instead, they mulled over the question. “I am simply traveling, although without a destination,” Zephyr admitted. “The trespassing was unintentional.”

Whiskers twitching, Zephyr glanced past the silver feline, although little more than reeds and grasses greeted them from such a low vantage point. An ear angling toward the river, less of a roar within their skull, Zephyr swept their gaze curiously back to Shellspots.

“You said ‘our’,” Zephyr observed. “Twice now. How many have laid claim here?” An odd question, perhaps, but the mink was nothing if not curious. Zephyr doubted the chances of running into the group rumored to be forming without even looking, but stranger things had happened.

Fate seemed rather partial to strange things.

Shellspots watched as the cat pulled themselves into a sitting position, and she smiled inwardly. Respectful. She approved.
“Oh, not to worry,” she assured them. “While we consider this our territory, our borders are only marked sporadically. I wouldn’t blame you if you’d missed the marker. Something we’ll have to rectify in the future, but for now we can afford to be a bit lax.”
Shellspots wondered how long that tranquility would last. When the other Clans undoubtedly sprang up, would they be friend, or foe? She hoped to have a guiding paw in at least some of them aside from RiverClan, so she could forge alliances before things had the chance to go sour, but she knew from experience that it was very easy for plans to go awry.
“My apologies,” Shellspots said at their question, realizing she had just assumed they knew to whom they were speaking. “This is the territory of the newly reformed RiverClan. I am the Clan’s leader.” The silver tabby paused for a moment, mentally tallying her warriors. “There are perhaps... fifteen of us? Though a few are away on other business at the moment. Have you heard of the Clans?”
That was a question she had asked so many times she could recite the whole spiel in her sleep at this point. Time to do it once more.
