cyril The words from his dream coming out of the mouths of other cats made Cyril want to grind his face into the damp dirt of the garden. What sort of destiny nonsense is this?He seemed to be the only one not excited at the prospect; Juniper was shivering with the gravity of the situation, and Cecil was stuck in an unattractively flabbergasted state of shock. Cyril shook his head, not ready to join them in the throes of awe. "Of course we didn't get here by coincidence," he grumbled. "We got here by walking." A pause, as he considered Cecil's words. "And don't tell me your unconventional teacher was a dream, for the love of—"His tail brushed the dirt in agitation. How had the dream gone, again? The glowing rock bit he remembered, something about the mines...four cats...he looked around the group gathered there. He counted, not trusting Juniper's deduction. Frowned. Counted again. Looked around desperately, hoping some other figure would appear among them, freeing him from what appeared to be snowballing into some kind of monstrous responsibility. Pointedly not answering Cecil's question, Cyril turned to Piper. "Are you in on this, too?" he asked her, dreading the answer. It seemed only too likely, if he, Juniper, and Cecil had had the dream, that the fourth of their number would have had it too. Based on her earlier words, though...Cyril's eyes squinted in thought, thought they were nearly closed at this point from the amount of frustrated facial expressions he felt were necessary. Something wasn't adding up here, but he was hard-pressed to say what it was.

Juniper knew before Cecil even answered she was right. A glance at Cyril and she knew he'd had the dream too, though he looked far less excited about the prospect of them being connected. Given his age though and the mystery of the dreams, she wasn't surprised.
Cyril tuned the question onto Piper though, and now Juniper hesitated. Because from the way the young cat had spoken, it sounded like only Cecil had had it. But she supposed if all four cats were in one place it would be too easy. "Think, young one. Do you recall meeting any cats in your dream you'd never seen before? Or maybe one you HAD met before? In my own dream..." She hesitated, before swallowing and soldiering on. "In my own dream, my father came to me. Younger and happier than I'd ever seen him. He told me that I'd been chosen for a destiny that would shape the world for generations to come."
Even now, remembering the cadence of his voice and the smell of his fur brought a lump to her throat, and Juniper coughed to the side politely in an attempt to dislodge it. Clearing her throat, she looked back at all of them. "There was also a she-cat there, named Shadowstar. Did she meet with any of you as well?"

Cecil || he/him || 29 moons Cecil was too caught up in the exhilaration of finding others who had received the prophecy to be offended by Cyril’s grumbling. When the tom turned to Piper, however, that made Cecil look to the ruddy she-cat as well. He couldn’t imagine she had been hiding any dreams from him, with how much she teased him about his own, but at this point it felt like anything could happen.
Her eyes widened, and she shook her head vehemently.
“Nuh-uh, I haven’t had any magical dreams about glowing rocks. I’m just tagging along to keep this fluff-brain out of trouble.” Piper inclined her head toward Cecil, though her voice lacked its usual teasing lilt. Cecil felt a stir of vindication, knowing that she was probably starting to realize his dreams had been real all along.
Then Juniper mentioned Shadowstar, and Cecil started in excitement.
“I saw her too! Shadowstar, I mean.” He clarified. “She didn’t tell me much though, just that I’m supposed to help bring the Clans of old back, and then the same prophecy you said just now.” He turned, looking at Cyril. “Did you see her too? Did she share any more details? I’ve been kind of wandering around blindly so far,” the flame point tom admitted.

cyril How often was it that the youngest member of a group was the most level-headed? Or perhaps it would be more apt to say the least dream-addled. That said, now that Juniper and Cecil had corroborated their stories, Piper's teasing manner had diminished. Great, now we're all taking this seriously.Cyril couldn't decide whether to be vindicated or perplexed at the mention of Shadowstar. On one side, he had not shared in the same delusion as his younger companions; on the other, was a separate, individual delusion any better? "Say what you will about glowing rocks," Cyril begrudgingly admitted. "But I didn't speak to any Shadowstar." He tactfully chose to omit the fact that he had spoken to a dream-cat with an equally ridiculous name. "Or any old family members," he added, as an afterthought. This was, again, a slight obfuscation of the truth; he had spoken to someone, just not either of the two possibilities presented thus far. Was it a mark against him that no one else had appeared in his dream, though? Did he have no connections to draw on from his long life? Maybe, he thought, uncharacteristically optimistic, Everyone I've ever cared about is still alive, and therefore too busy living to haunt my dreams.Cecil's words finally hit home and Cyril turned abruptly back towards him. "Wandering blindly? What about the mines?"

Cecil || he/him || 29 moons Cecil blinked at Cyril. Something wasn’t lining up here.
“If it wasn’t Shadowstar, who did you talk to?”
The kittypet still didn’t know much about the Clans as a whole, regretfully. Most of his nighttime lessons revolved around herbs and the like, with little time left over for anything else. Shadowstar had certainly seemed to be the cat in charge, if there were one.
At Cyril’s mention of the mines, he grew a bit sheepish again.
“We were looking for them, but we got... a bit turned around.” Cecil shared a glance with Piper, and she grimaced right back.
“We’ve been walking in circles for the better part of a moon, is what he’s saying,” the young she-cat cut in dryly. Cecil found he couldn’t even be upset; she had referenced their troubles earlier, but with the way things were going it was probably better that they know just how directionally challenged the two were.
“We don’t leave our garden much,” he added, as if in explanation. “We did get a lead early on in our journey, that we might find what we were looking for if we went in the direction of the “big trees”. I figured we’d find those and go from there. As far as I know, there’s no mines in this area. Do you guys know where the big trees are?”
Piper snorted, presumably at how vague his question was, but didn’t say anything else.

cyril "I didn't talk to anyone," lied Cyril. He consoled himself with the fact that his interaction with Thunderstar barely qualified as a two-way conversation; the weird dream cat had mostly just monologued at him. Maybe he shouldn't have been so surprised that the others had so much trouble finding the mines. It wasn't like they were especially inviting, not to mention the distance one would need to travel to get to them. One thing at a time, though, he thought, and braced to address all the wild inaccuracies that were being thrown about. "Sure I know where the mines are," Cyril started off, just to get that out in the open. "The general direction, at least. And that direction is not a circle." He cast his baleful glare towards Cecil and Piper. That much, at least, should have been obvious. "And they're not in the forest, either," he continued, turning to Juniper. "They're farther afield, past both the moors and the marshes." He paused, considering. "Actually, Juniper, you might have been closer to it where you started, rather than coming all the way here."Cyril opened his mouth to next address the 'big trees', but then closed it decisively, choosing not to dignify the question with an answer. Pinning down a specific tree in the forest seemed like foolish advice, and he wondered who had directed the two youngsters in such a vague manner. Judging by Piper's snort, he was not alone in his opinion.

Cyril would have been better off if he'd just ignored Cecil's question. Juniper had a sixth sense to know when she was being lied to, and the fact that Cyril was willing to lie said more about the situation than if he just hadn't answered. Especially since Juniper had no problems calling him out on it. "Liar." she mewed simply, narrowing her eyes at the elder. "I won't ask for specifics but you spoke to someone. You wouldn't have known about the significance of the mines if you hadn't."
She let out a scoff at the revelation she'd been going in the wrong direction, a slight 'tch' of annoyance. "Wonderful." she grumbled to herself. All that time, wasted. Was it truly wasted though if destiny had led her paws here, to these two cats who'd shared her dream?
Juniper was happy to fill in where Cyril had trailed off. "There's plenty of significant big trees in the forest. There's a sycamore tree in the middle of the oaks that reaches taller than the surrounding ones. There's a burnt sycamore tree in my marshes, but I wouldn't consider that a BIG tree."
She frowned to herself, tail flicking in the air behind her, and thought outloud. "From the sounds of it, your lead meant big trees grouped together. The only thing I can think of that fits THAT description is the big hollow in the middle of the forest. It's so overgrown with brambles and bracken and all sorts of natural defenses that no cat in living memory knows what's inside it. The only reason I even know there's trees is because they raise so far above the edges they're STILL taller than the surrounding trees."
Funnily enough if they HAD gone towards the center of the forest, Juniper probably would have come across them sooner. But then that would have left Cyril in the twolegplace by himself, and who knows how long it would have been until they came across him? "We need to go there." she decided, facing Cyril. He'd be the biggest challenge to convince, she knew, so he was the one she directed it to. "The prophecy speaks of four, and if Piper didn't dream of the cats with stars in their fur, then that means one more cat is out there. Who knows where, or how far away. They may have already found the mines and are just waiting for us! Don't you want to know what it means? Why we were picked for this? We were chosen for a reason, and I for one intend on finding out what that reason is."

Cecil || he/him || 29 moons Cecil watched as Piper frowned right back at Cyril, sticking out her tongue. He could tell she wanted to volley back a witty retort, but the elderly tom turned to Juniper to continue speaking before she could.
“But then who gave you the prophecy?” Cecil asked, tilting his head in confusion. Understanding dawned on him as Juniper called Cyril out, though he still didn’t know why he would lie about something like that. Being spoken to by starry cats was amazing!
The flame point nodded enthusiastically as Juniper listed off trees that might be the ones Shade had spoken about.
“Yes, it was a group of trees! Branches high enough to touch the sky,” he said reverently. “As if they’ve been there longer than time itself.”
While it hadn’t been ideal to be left wandering in the woods for so long, their paws had clearly been guided by fate. If they had reached the big trees right away on their own, Cecil might never have known there were other cats who had received the same prophecy! Of course, it did specify four cats, but he had assumed that it was his task to find them. It was a weight off his shoulders to know that he wasn’t the only one with this destiny, and that they were all trying to find each other.
“I agree,” Cecil said in response to Juniper. “The starry cats have entrusted us with this message, and we need to find the fourth cat. We can’t let any of them down.” He glanced at Piper, who shrugged.
“Sure, why not? We’ve come this far.”
Eyes shining with excitement not unlike a kit’s, Cecil turned hopefully to Cyril.

cyril Cyril directed his most scathing blink in Juniper's direction when she called him out on his minor misrepresentation of the truth, but otherwise let the comment pass. There were more important, prophecy-adjacent matters at hand, after all. "Does it matter?" he grumbled at Cecil's question. "Could've been a purple-speckled frog, and I suspect you'd find it just as trustworthy." He had the faintest hope that Cecil hadn't picked up on that last bit, but didn't worry himself about it too much; a little teasing wouldn't kill the young tom. As annoyed as he was at being called out, Cyril did appreciate Juniper's willingness to delve further into the issue of the big trees. It had seemed such a frivolous detail to him, but she actually had good insights. He was surprised—and perhaps a little impressed, though hard-pressed would one be to get him to admit that—at how knowledgeable Juniper was about the forest, considering, based on his own admittedly limited understanding, she more often frequented the marsh. He cocked his head as she went on; he may be old, but one was never too old to learn new things. Much to his chagrin, the discussion quickly returned to prophecy-talk. Ugh. They all sounded so determined, save for Piper, perhaps, with her relatively noncommittal response. Cecil's wide eyes staring imploringly at him certainly didn't help matters, either. Cyril let out a put-upon sigh, the air rustling unattractively as it left his throat. "Fine," he said at last. "If only so none of you lose yourselves in the woods again." Or get led astray by purple-speckled frogs, he added glumly, in his mind.

Cecil || he/him || 29 moons Cecil’s spirits fell at Cyril’s grumbling. Not only was he clearly mocking the flame point for being so blindly trusting of nothing more than dreams, he didn’t sound at all as if he would agree to journeying all the way to the mines. From what Cecil could tell, it was quite far away.
Then Juniper cut in, managing to both defend the legitimacy of the dreams and match Cyril’s biting tone in a single remark. Cecil turned and grinned at her. He was beginning to like this she-cat.
There was a long moment of tension between the three of them -- Piper didn’t seem quite as invested, happy with the outcome either way -- until finally Cyril relented, sighing as if they had asked him to go roll about in fox dung. But the important thing was he had agreed!
Juniper was quick to lay out the plan, and Cecil found himself nodding along. He looked forward to traveling with her; she obviously knew what she was doing and it would be far better than going in circles again.
“Here in two days,” he agreed, glancing at Piper to see her nodding as well. “We already said our goodbyes when we left Twolegplace originally, so we’ll just stay in the area. Don’t want to make anyone think we’re staying,” Cecil explained. It hurt a little to think of getting the chance to see their housefolk again before going on such a long adventure, but he didn’t want to risk getting locked indoors after being gone a whole moon. “Just let us know when you’re both ready to go.”
While the past moon had taken its toll on Cecil, his confidence in their plan waning more and more each day, he felt that sense of wonder and excitement returning to him. It felt even more real, knowing he wasn’t the only one who had received a dream from starry cats. This was it! Their destiny!
Piper seemed to feel the same way, rearing back onto her hind paws and swiping at the air with her claws, grinning.
“Magical shiny rock, here we come!”

cyril Foolishly, Cyril had not thought to expect a response from Juniper to his teasing of Cecil. He grumbled in an incoherent yet discernably put-upon manner to demonstrate his frustration at the two of them ganging up on him. His heart dropped at the mention of goodbyes. Sure, he had come to terms with his advanced age, but he had never expected to actually have to say goodbye to anyone. For Juniper, getting her affairs in order likely meant some extra herb-gathering. For Cyril, it could be the last time he ever saw those closest to him. And then she was gone, and he was left alone with the enthusiasm of Cecil and Piper, while bitterness clawed its way through his heart. "Two days then," he meowed gruffly, and left the excitement behind without any further farewells to the two youngsters lost to their fantasies. "Unless anyone falls into a hole in the meantime," he said under his breath, certain, this time, that no one could hear him.
