Welcome to Info Drive Discussion #4! In this thread, we’ll be discussing the Prey Mouse. Here are things to consider when responding to this thread, so if you have thoughts on any of the following please feel free to add them! And if you’re a bit unsure as to what exactly this is about, there’s a thread about the Info Drive system here. Size: How big is this prey? How many cats will it feed? Difficulty: How hard is this prey to catch? Is it dangerous to catch this prey? Location: Where is this prey found? What sort of environments does it frequently appear in? Season: Does this prey have a specific season that it appears in? When can it be found, and when is it scarce? This thread will be open for discussion until November 30th, 2022! After that it will be locked and whatever we have decided on will be considered canon!

- Mice are pretty small, and can only feed one adult cat. Feral cats eat approximately nine mice a day, though this number can adjusted in-game when necessary. Given the small serving size, as well its availability in a lot of territories, and its status as a staple food source for cats, maybe “mice” would be used as a unit of measurement for how much a serving of prey is? Food for thought (pun intended haha!).
- Mice are easy prey for cats to kill, given their small size. They’re probably a first catch for any first-time hunters. Depending on areas (like the barns, for example), prey may be abundant enough to be caught more easily. Not sure if that’s a myth or if it’s an actual fact in Warriors though lol
- Field/wood mice are found in fields, farmlands, logs, shrubbery, vegetation, and tall grasses. They like burrowing underground.
- House mice tend to live on fields or wooded areas near human structures. They make nests out of human materials and natural materials.
- Harvest mice live on reed beds, grassland, and near woodlands. Their nests are spherical and made of tightly woven grass.
- Mice are most frequently moving around during greenleaf. They start trying to find shelters for leafbare during leaf-fall. Though they can be found during leaf-bare, they’re most likely underground or hiding in a some other sheltered place.

On the old TCR, I actually had a nutritional guide where I worked out how many cats any given piece of prey would feed, on average! Here's a snippet I just pulled from that:
And in this case, your average mouse weighs around 40g, according to a cursory Googling, which is anywhere from 1/2 to about 1/4 of that requirement. But that's also not factoring in that a lot of that will be skin and bones, so the figure of ~9/day does make sense! We might want to adjust it like you say, for game purposes, but we've got a starting point at least!
I do like the idea of them being sort of a "serving size" reference! Not entirely sure how we'd incorporate it but worth thinking about :D
I'd say depending on abundance/familiarity with cats, some mice would definitely be easier to hunt than others. Plus there's always the idea that more mice = more chances at a successful catch.
And yeah, I imagine mice are one of those "they're sort of everywhere" pieces of prey. More common in some areas sure, but for the most part if you look hard enough in good weather you can find a mouse.

On the “serving size” idea, it could be used like, “This squirrel is two mouseful” or “This shrew is a half mouseful”.
