It was unusually cold. The wind whipping at his body from every angle; when he tries to hide from it's blast from one direction it cuts through him from another angle. It seeped through the thickness of his dark fur without regard to the skin beneath that created goose flesh to rise and his bones to shudder the longer he stood in the abyssal space of a dead and forgotten forest. He could assume it was in the coldest of months as not a single leaf clung to the gnarling tress that looked like ghostly fingers reaching across the space above his head. A white fog crept like something off of a morning lake mist but much thicker; harder to breathe through as he stalked through it, placing one careful paw in front of the next. He could not see where he was but the sounds were like monsters roaring in his ears from every direction without a cause or a sight of said monsters. He would not allow himself to feel the fear; not outwardly anyway even when his heart thudded painfully against his chest as he walked with care across a path that he could not even see a destination for. The fog was thicker now to the point he could not even see the trees and for the briefest of moments he swore he saw something in the fog; like a figure - a shadow. Somewhere within the depths that he couldn't make the details of said figure.
But he pressed forward. Somewhere along the way the howling of the wind and the roaring of whatever lay beyond his sight made him think that he was hearing things whispered in his ear as if another lurked just over his shoulder. No one was there though and the longer he walked aimlessly the faster his heart raced. When he attempted to call out his voice did not reach; not a single sound echoed of his own accord and he could not help the feeling of utter loneliness and weakness dragging through him like claws ripping through his flesh. His last paw step placed itself on something rough and cold beneath the worn pads of his paws and he looked down; the fog clearing just seconds for him to see he stood upon a hard stone of a long stretch of Thunderpath on either side of him. He stood amongst the fog unsure of where to go next.
But then somewhere over the roar of unknown voices and howling of wind came another sound; one that shot panic straight to his very core that followed the subtle rumble beneath his paws that only grew louder and harder the longer he stood there. Before long a twin pair of golden orbs pierced through the fog and barrel straight towards him. He'd never felt as much fear in all his life combined until that very moment. He tried to move; barely making it too steps before pain ripped through his hindquarters making him spin to see a gnarled and ratty paw with sharp but cracked claws caked in blood sinking into his thick fur and when his green eyes followed the matted fur of the unknown paw his yowl of horror was drowned out as his gaze landed on the familiar mangled figure of his father's corpse as it glared up from a mass crumbled on the Thunderpath; illuminated by the on-coming monster that barrel towards them. He yanked, twisted, and clawed attempting to free himself from his dead father's claws but for whatever supernatural strength his father possessed in death rooted him fast to the vibrating tarmac. Just as the large shape of the metal monster broke through the thickness of the fog in a bright beam of light screeching towards him with abandon-
Morpheus jerked awake. Eyes wide in horror and claws sinking into the softness of the dirt beneath his paws; no hard stone or vibrating Thunderpath in sight. No large metal monster barreling towards him...no dead ghost of his father's mangled corpse trying to get him. His heart took awhile to settle enough not to make him feel as if he was going to have a cardiac arrest or something but his limbs still trembled from the utter fear he had felt in that nightmare. The sun was just peaking through the trees from where he lay curled up within an old nook of a tree. The soft breathing of Luna a comfort against his spine from where she'd tucked herself sometime within the night at the back of the nook to sink into his thick fur for warmth and comfort as she'd slept. Her gentle breathing and even heartbeat soothed the male as he turned his head to see her familiar fur; a contrast against his darker frame as she slept. He allowed himself a moment to watch her and remember that he was alright and remind himself where he was before twisting himself to rasp his tongue between Luna's ears. She purred contently and nuzzled into his fur a little more but unfortunately Morpheus could not stick around. He needed to go find themselves some breakfast. So, he maneuvered himself from beneath the smaller feline and slipped from the nook within the tree and stretched his large frame before allowing himself to take in the area.
It had been rather late when they'd made camp for the night but the scent of Two-legs drifted through the air which made Morpheus think perhaps that is why he had such a terror last night. It had been many many moons since he'd last visited the lands near the Two-legs after his father's death; a part of his past that he swore he wasn't going to revisit. But the nightmare had piqued his morbid curiosity and he found himself moving towards the familiar scent that had brought his father his end. He walked for a good several minutes through the New-Leaf. The scent of fresh flowers and moist earth from the last few days of spring rain made his senses tingle in delight but there was also an underlining mass of dread the closer he got to the scent of the Two-legs. He pushed his way through some brush and halted seeing the long stretch of black pavement of the Thunderpath. His gaze swept across the spans as if looking for a mangled corpse he knew had long been taken care of by vultures and seeing none as expected the dark feline dared to step closer; one paw raised above the rough blackened stone with trepidation fearing that if he laid paw on it a monster would sense him and come rushing down to end his life as it had his father.
A movement across the path made the male freeze and eyes flicker up to catch whatever was on the other side; fearing perhaps it was a two-leg that had spotted him. Instead, he was met with a pair of feline eyes that made him take pause. His face falling impassively as he stared across the span of pavement at the other as if daring the other to speak or to draw closer; he did not know but he wasn't going to brave the trek himself without good reason. So he sank back down onto his hindquarters and continued to stare unabashed at the other. He did not wish to fight of course so if this feline was hostile he'd have his choice to flee or to fight but Morpheus was not one to allow himself to back down or to show weakness. Instead, he waited with patience akin to a predator to see what the other cat would do. template by Magpie of Adoxography

Shade - 14 moons - he/him
Whether by fate or coincidence, a similar reason drew Shade to the thunderpath as he wandered the forest he called home. He had pathways he followed to sit and reflect in spots of significance, good hunting spots between them so he wasn't just wandering with no use. He crouched in the bushes, nose wrinkling up at the sharp acrid scent that drifted from the bitumen. He much preferred to be away from the large black expanse but he could not give up the hope that one day his mother might find a way to return.
He remained hidden for a while, ears flattening against his head as a monster rumbled past. Their speed always made Shade's heart beat faster, scarcely believing anything could go so quick! He began to groom his slightly ruffled fur, though such a task was always a fool's errand. The slightest breeze and his fur would fluff right back up.
Just as he was about to leave movement caught his gaze as another cat stepped up to the hot, dark surface. Shade stood up and took a few steps forward, mouth open to warn them about then danger, when their eyes met. The usual stand off began, both appraising the other for a moment.
"I was about to warn you about the danger of the thunderpath. In case you weren't aware of it!" Shade called out, body language unthreatening and friendly. "I'm sorry if I started you!"

Unassuming. Friendly. Happy. Those were the words Morpheus would describe the other. Those were the words rolling inside his cranium that made the hairs on the back of his neck rise a little in wariness. He did not experience anyone who was openly friendly and seeking others'attention without an alternative motive. The tom was not someone who was considered a very negative thinker; being a pessimist is not technically his way of life. He liked to call it living with caution and seeing the bigger picture of things. He enjoyed a good conversation when one arose; even better if they were the witty bartering type like Luna. But strangers did not often come up to him willingly if they crossed paths in such circumstances. But this feline was not one of those people who'd approach with caution. That much was clear as he caught sight of Morpheus's large frame from across the distance and stared at him just as openly as the dark tom did to the other on the side over. It made the dark cat take pause; claws absently flexing against the harsh ground beneath his large paws.
The cat was not a threat.
It was something Morpheus had to tell himself as he eased the fur back down his spine and tipped his chin up a bit as the other spoke; calling from across the Thunderpath's dark spans to address the him. His words were amusing enough to allow a slight crack of a smile to tip Morpheus's maw a bit even if the other couldn't see it from that distance and instead he turned his head to look across one side of the street to the next to make sure that there were no large metal monsters or up walkers heading in their direction or in ear shot. Morpheus would hate to be caught in the cross fires of either of them; the memory of his night terror still fresh in his mind that his pads tingled, psyching his mind into thinking he could feel the ghosts of the vibrating engine beneath him.
"I am more then aware of the capabilities this death trap holds." there was a wry tone in his voice as he called back.
The tom took a pause then mulling over his choices before glancing along the stretch of road once more and chose in that moment to lunge his large body forward to propel in long strides his figure to make his destination across to the stranger. When his paws were finally on comfortable ground again; the softness of the grass beneath his pads helping ease the slight hammering of his heart he turned his attention to the other and cocked his head ever so slightly.
"You did not startled me; that is no concern. I think that thing scares me more than a stranger ever could." he grumbled only half under his breath as he shot a glance over his shoulder at the black pavement.
Even if he was a large cat, even if he thought himself brave. No feline dared brave the Thunderpath without some sort of trepidation or fear lurking beneath their fur. Morpheus just so happened to still be thinking of that awful nightmare hours prior that had set him on edge. He returned his attention to the other and sized him up with an attentive stare. He realized that the other was not a kittypet; there was no scent of up walkers lingering on his fur nor was there a collar around his throat meaning perhaps he was a stray from around these parts.
"You don't seem the sort to sulk around these parts. Visiting a friend?" there was a tight lipped smile placed on his maw. Not that Morpheus judged whether a stray and a kittypet could be friends it was more of the why someone would want to come to a place like this to find friends. The two-legs held as much danger to strays as the Thunderpath and it's monsters did. template by Magpie of Adoxography

Shade - 14 moons - he/him
As the other tom began to cross Shade couldn't help but feel his own spike of anxiety despite the fact that he knew a monster wasn't coming. He sat a respectable distance from the actual Thunderpath itself. Shade's large furred paws were attuned to feeling even the slightest rustle in the thick forest undergrowth, he'd know a monster was coming before anyone would see it. He was glad however, to move back closer to cover, taking a few steps back so he could sit underneath the bush he had been crouching in earlier.
The only sign that Shade was wary of the other cat showed in the way he almost showed deference to the older tom; in short he was being respectful. It made sense, seeing as even with his fluffy bulk he was still a little in the lanky early adult stage, smaller than Morpheus.
"Oh I." Shade opened his mouth to reply before he faltered. It was hard to say, words only spoken once when he explained to his sister what had happened to their mother. She'd left the next night, didn't even say goodbye. His gaze moved to the Thunderpath, true wariness finally visible as he eyed it. "I live in this forest. Much deeper in, I don't come this way often."
He took in a breath, ears flicked back as he wrapped his long, fluffy tail around himself for comfort. "My mother was taken by Two-legs about two moons ago here. I come to check that... Maybe she'll find her way back."
It would be clear that Shade was a very honest and forthright cat. He didn't hide his emotions, body language clear. Perhaps such behaviour would get him in trouble in the future. Not all cats had good intentions.

It was normal for strangers to feel either intimidated by each other or at least wary; the world was not a kind place to live even in the best light of days. Morpheus knew this just as much as any who lived beyond the comforts of a kittypet life. Not that Morpheus knew anything about that kind of life. He'd lived his whole life as a stray; endearing...a lot that did not have to do with actual survival of the wild. Sometimes the closest people one had in their life was scary and far more dangerous then any predator you could come across on your journey. Gods above only knew Morpheus would rather face a badger or a fox compared to the real deal that he had to endure for the sake of his family. So when the other; dark and slighter in figure then his own seemed to back up a few paces as he crossed over did not go unnoticed by the larger older tom and instead he respected the other's decision whether it came from a wariness of Morpheus or true respect the darkling did not know. He wouldn't question it.
Instead, the tom's gaze followed the others across the path he'd moments ago crossed and scanned the edges of the forest beyond on the other side with keen interest as much as it were seeking for true danger. Perhaps finding another pair of eyes or something peering from the brush. But there was nothing but the slight breeze that brushed through the foliage on the other side and the feline turned his gaze back to Shade as he spoke. He gave a slow thoughtful blink as the younger feline's voice filled the space between them in leu of answering the Morpheus's question.
"I would like to express a sense of condolence of some sort to that comment but I'm afraid...that it would be misplaced. It could be a good thing or a bad thing a Two-leg took her; for all you know she could be perfectly fine and happy even but I know wondering of such a thing will not give true answers." he flicked his tail idly as he scanned the side of the road he was on as if just now taking notice of the change of scenery. His eyes looking for any sort of danger or an idea of the patch of area they sat talking in; a part of him wary a two-leg would find them at any moment.
"I too lost a parent to the two-legs. But our circumstances are...grossly different I can assure you. I suppose I was led here from a sense of guilt if anything." his gaze traveled back to the black snake of a Thunderpath; his expression slightly darker as he did so in remembrance.
His father's death was technically not on his paws. There was no metaphorical blood. But, he had led his father to the circumstances of his death. It was his choice to dump his father here in hopes a Two-leg would find him and perhaps give him a better future than the lunacy his mind had dragged him into after Morpheus's mother's death. The tom could not have foreseen his father's demise on this very same Thunderpath; gods above give thanks that his sister had not been with him for that journey or he feared she too may have lost her mind from grief and committed an act worse than betrayal.
"It is never easy to lose a family member under any circumstances; I assure you. But head my warning; you cannot hold onto this mission forever. You do not look like a kit...nor grown so I can understand you have attachments to things..nor do I know your life circumstances that you lead. Just be careful, friend. That is all I ask." Morpheus turned his gaze to pin the other down in a long stare as his eyes held secrets that would not leave his tongue and his next words oddly ominous.
"You never know when will be your last, am I right?" his whiskers twitched a bit before he blinked and something in his posture and facial features softened into something a little more pleasant.
"I'm Morpheus. By the way. I live in those woods in that direction." he tipped his chin into the dense forest trees a little further then where he had first popped out of. "Moon child and I are traveling. Seeking a place...perhaps an adventure of sorts." his tail swept in front of him and he idly plucked little barbs from his tail with sharp claws as his ears perked in favor of catching the other's response; he finds not looking at others often puts people at ease a little bit after an intimidating or otherwise fearful experience. template by Magpie of Adoxography

Shade met Morpheus' gaze when he sensed the tom seeking it. He stared back, not in any intimidating way, clearly considering the other cats words carefully. He understood what Morpheus was saying, almost eager to have a chance to learn something new. When their gazes shifted away he looked across the road where Morpheus had indicated moments ago.
"I'm Shade. I live deeper in this forest." He indicated with a nod of his own head. "I was actually born where I still live. My mother wouldn't want the life of a kittypet. She'd try to escape if she could."
He couldn't help but turn his gaze back to the road, paws picking up the faint vibration of a monster incoming. Shade got into a low crouch to make himself smaller in preparation, it was better to not be seen. The pause as they waited for the monster to pass by, those beasts painfully loud as they whipped down the Thunderpath. Once it was gone he straightened back up, grooming down some ruffled fur.
"I have a cave I live in not too far. It's in this really overgrown ravine. If you need a safe place to stay for a bit I'd welcome guests." Shade scuffed the grass underneath his paw, very focused on the blades as he spoke. It was painfully clear that he was perhaps lonely. His mother had told him stories as a kitten of cats who banded together, helped one another. They roamed the forest he called home until one day there was a huge fight. He'd begged her for more stories, asked so many questions. He played make believe with his siblings.
Something about that idea, the stories, called to him.

Meeting others along his travels was one of those things that Morpheus was both wary and interesting to the tom. There are many characters within one's path that could be a blessing or a misfortune for oneself. He believed every soul he met was either a lesson, a blessing, or a teaching opportunity. Which category Shade fell into the large dark tom was yet to shed light on. The feline seemed comfortable in the space that he shared; as he had stated, he lived in those woods for as long as he had breath in his lungs. Unlike Morpheus who traveled with a restless spirit alongside his adopted daughter. It was people like Shade that piqued Morpheus's interest. A local who knew the area well would have many stories to tell about it or themselves growing up in it. The smaller of the pair seemed like he perhaps had some interesting stories even in his younger moons that he was in comparison to Morpheus. He wasn't planning on sticking around the area for long; always a restless spirit needing something else to do and things to learn, even if it was tiresome. He knew Luna - his moon child, would probably enjoy a stationed area for once if Morpheus chose to stick around longer than their routine stays in certain parts of the woods and beyond. He did not go too far; a part of him was still tied down by whatever superstition he may have ever since his family's split. Or perhaps he was hoping he'd run into his sister; believing with all his heart that perhaps she was still alive and out there somewhere. Not that he would confess it aloud to anyone.
He felt the rumbling beneath the pads of his paws just moments before he caught the other's reaction. Their frame hunkering down to wait out the monster that would surely zoom past them in a blur before even a single blink could pass by. Morpheus did not hunker down though. Instead, his claws sank into the earth beneath his paws and his green eyes turned towards the Thunderpath; thankful that at least he was far enough away that he would not be impacted. Still, the noise and the way his paws were starting to grow numb at the feeling of the harsh vibrations did nothing to settle the racing of his heart the closer the thing got. His hair whipped around him from the aftermath as the large colored metal car zoomed past without a second glance at the strays on the side of the road. At least they were safe from anyone stopping by; Morpheus had heard stories of Two-legs stopping on a rare occassion upon seeing an animal in the road or on the side of the road; whether to help or abduct was a matter of who was there to see it happening in his opinion. But he and Shade were thankfully one of those who were ignored and as the rumbling grew distant and the vibrations disappeared with distance of the monster the older male allowed himself to let out the breath he did not know he was holding as his heart raced in his chest and his ears rang with the roar of the monster's cries.
His nose subconsciously wrinkled when he did inhale at last; tasting the horrid smell of the monster's breath that lingered in it's wake. Morpheus would rather smell carrion food and rotten meat before he'd ever willing wish to smell something like that again. He dug his claws from the dirt and flexed them in front of his face as he tried to get the numbness to go away from his pads. He should be lucky he did not get captured along with Shade and only be left with a tingle and uncomfortable feeling in his body. When the other finally broke the silence the darkling raised his gaze to him and tilted his head as he studied the other thoughtfully. There was a certain slump of his shoulders or perhaps it was the tone of his voice that had something lingering beneath that Morpheus must have picked up on because as he spoke the dark figure only thought the other was probably lonely; why else would one stranger offer shelter and companionship to another without knowing each other well enough for such formalities? It wasn't uncommon to share names; if in future they'd ever cross paths again it would always be nice to see a friendly face and have a name to put to said face but Morpheus couldn't remember that last time he'd met a stranger along his and Luna's path that so willingly offered shelter and friendship so openly.
"I'm sure moon child would enjoy the company. You'd get along with her great I'm sure." there was a lilt of a fondness as he spoke about this 'moon child'. A nickname that he had given to Luna, his adopted daughter because she reminded him of a full moon; pale and illuminating everything around her even in the darkness. And such as every New Moon; full and large in the sky she had been a symbol of new hope for the tom. Not that he would say that aloud to anyone lest he sound too sappy.
"We don't stay in an area very long. We'd actually just came from that direction most recently and been hiding away in a little clearing for a day or so while we passed through...Perhaps I just needed to stop by to pay respects or something or else I probably wouldn't have stepped foot in these parts of the woods...they do not bring me good memories." he blinked as he looked up at the sky with a squint
"We would appreciate the company though. It'd be good to stop and sight see awhile; if you are sure we would not be of a concern to you? We wouldn't want to overthrow your daily routine or anything." he added turning his gaze back to the other before he looked past him to the area around them and rose to his paws before tipping his chin towards one side of the road.
"What's down that way? Are there Two-legs nests nearby?" if there was a monster there had to be some up walker nests close enough by. This was a relatively busy area from what Morpheus remembers. "Are there others like you here as well?" template by Magpie of Adoxography

Shade looked quite happy when Morpheus agreed to his offer of a safe place to stay. "It won't be a bother at all. The cave is pretty roomy and the area is pretty safe." He replied as he got up, stretching out first before he looked down the road. "There's a whole big cluster of nests that way. The edge comes right up against the forest, with a small stretch of grass between. A few kittypets live there but they don't often come deep enough into the forest where I live. Otherwise there are a few cats around, quite a few by the river recently actually. I prefer to hunt in the forest so I don't see those cats often."
He looked into his forest, his home. Shade could never understand how Petal could just leave like she did. It wasn't just the memories of his family that kept him here, it was something deeper. He belonged there in the undergrowth.
"Did you want me to show you where I live so you can make sure it's safe?" Shade asked as he took a few steps into the forest, keen to step into the shadowed canopy.

Loneliness was a beast all in it's own. A hungry entity that no one sees until it's too late; feasting on others until no one realizes they sunk so low until it's too late. Sometimes, it comes unexpected when on one day you think all is well and the next instant is is torn away like the cover from your eyes to show you just what you had been missing. Morpheus knew loneliness well even when he had family but when his family went away one by one he did not know just how heavy the world could be one one's shoulders until a guiding light is shone in his path to give him a new purpose. He was not considered antisocial; he enjoyed company. especially those who were quick witted and sharp tongued like his little moon child. But then there were others like Shade who were not experienced enough of the hardships on their own that slowly drown themselves in it. The smaller and younger feline missed his mother; very dearly like any kit would who was not accustomed to being away from their kin and Morpheus pitied him. No, perhaps not pity. No one cares for pity since there is nothing to be done. But sympathy for his situation at the least.
He was happy though when the older of the pair agreed to stay with him and that gave Morpheus a good little feeling. It would be nice to be with another soul asides from his daughter for once; he claimed it would be more beneficial for her than for him but he secretly found the idea appealing after so long on the road with nothing but the sharp silver tongue of Luna at his side. So when the other began to speak and rise to his paws the darklings eyes traveled in the same direction as if he could sense or see the cluster of nests spoken about. He would be keen to avoid that direction then. Stray cats from those places were not uncommonly to run into so thus he did not fear them. It was the up walkers and monsters they controlled that scared the daylights from his soul.
At the mention of a gathering of cats by the river made him turn his head to stare intently at the side of Shade's face. A gathering a cats he says. A gathering of cats...it sounded like a familiar notion that tickled the back of his head. He did not know why though. He would be sure to store away the topic for a later use but for the moment he nodded casually to the other's words in agreement as he turned to follow the other.
"I would like to leave this area, yes. I would like to get away from this dark path in favor of more comfortable surroundings. This place makes me nervous." he muttered under his breath as he braced himself to cross the dark pathway once more to follow Shade's paw steps back towards the cover of the forest on the other side.
He would not be going anywhere near the nests for a very very long time afterwards. He had traveled here for a purpose; perhaps to ease his guilty conscious or perhaps led by fate to meet Shade but regardless he would be sure not to cross this area without very good reason. template by Magpie of Adoxography

Date | @nameThere was a spring to Shade's steps as he led Morpheus towards his home, crossing the Thunderpath and heading deeper into the forest, leaving the marshier lands behind. Instantly the trees closed in on the pair, sunlight dappling through the canopy that swayed with the light breeze. Shade jumped over roots and weaved through the undergrowth with a confidence that came from knowing his home very well.
"I don't think there is any cat out there who isn't unnerved by the Thunderpath." Shade commented as they travelled. "I usually just peek at it when I'm hunting in the area."
He came to an area where a large tree a fallen some moons ago, looking to Morpheus. "Watch what I do and then copy me. It's a good shortcut."
Shade crouched for a moment before he leapt pretty high, back legs landing on an uprooted root so he could propel himself up onto another, grabbing it was his forepaws to hoist himself up. He balanced on it a little precariously, but his confidence once again showed that he had done this many times before. A hop, skip and a jump later and he was at the top of the great trees uprooted base. "You could try and scale the side but the trunk is very slippery."

If there was something Morpheus was well attuned to it was danger and the possibility of the cruelty of this world. But Shade was not a cruel cat; he did not possess the darkness that Morpheus knew very well in himself. There was something so innocent and vulnerable within the younger tom's eyes that hinted that despite his moons he had not allowed the world to corrupt him even with the misfortune of losing family. That is where the pair different but no one as dark as the ebony tom could go around this world without the sunshine of another by their side to keep them grounded. Shade seemed like a good kid all in all; if albeit lonely. So when the other crossed with careful steps and keen senses across the overbearing Thunderpath Morpheus was quick to follow his lead.
The hairs on his spine sticking on end as he did so. The harshness of the concrete beneath the pads of his paws was unyielding but he did not feel the phantom vibrations of a monster rushing their way. It was only until they finally reached the other side and the clear sky changed to overcast of tree limbs and sunlight pouring down through the leaves gaps that he allowed the tension to release from his body the farther they strolled from the Thunderpath. Morpheus allowed his green eyes to scan the landmarks as they passed; mentally keeping note of the direction and anything familiar to go by as they moved deeper into the woods for a roadmap to follow on his way home.
When Shade began speaking again the larger feline allowed his ears to swivel in his direction despite his eyes never leaving the path in front of them. He wanted to be relieved to hear that though others lived in this forest those particular cats were not known for being very social. He wondered if Shade and his mother had ever run into these grouped cats or if they were just word to ear. It had been awhile since Morpheus had been in these parts of the forest; not since his father's death and his departure from his sister's company. He blinked his eyes over at the younger tom and gave a half smile despite him not being able to see it behind his back.
"Have you encountered these groups before? There aren't any...forest laws they are trying to enforce or anything?" there would not be a very happy committee if that was the case.
When they came to a large structure of a fallen tree his green eyes stared from the base to the ends. He wasn't someone who enjoyed climbing. But if that was the only way to do so then so be it. He watched with careful eyes as the smaller more agile feline ascended with practiced ease. 'do it like him?' Morpheus wanted to snort at the comment. As if the larger bulkier tom had the agility to climb a tree - fallen or not. But he sucked it up; swallowing the snarky reply he wished to give and attempted at least with much less grace then the other to climb the roots. His claws sinking as deeply into the wood as he could get them making his paws hurt at bit at the strain but he managed to scramble with an undignified grumble and grunts under his breath as he eventually hauled his fluffy butt up to stand beside the other looking rather displeased.
"You chose a good place to make your home; I imagine not a lot can make it up here if they are anything like myself without giving away their position." it was a half heart attempt at trying not to sound like a jerk to the other since he was being kind enough to offer him some company.

shade 15 moons | he/him | loner
Date | @name Shade kept an eye on Morpheus as he scaled the tree, ready to try to help the fellow tom if he needed it. He did note the difficulty, feeling a little bad at making his new friend climb, but once Morpheus made it to the top his tail tip curled happily. "There are no laws that I know of," he began as Shade trotted along the fallen tree. "But the group by the river has gotten much bigger. I only see them at a distance, or smell them."
He made it most of the way across the tree, crouching to look over the side. Morpheus would see a ravine below them, overgrown brambles surrounding the entire thing, the only spot clear where the tree had fallen and some space in the middle. It was clear to see that this was Shade's main way of getting to his home, claw marks on the trunk, some quite old. He wiggled his haunches to calibrate before dropping down onto a ledge, the aforementioned cave right there.
"I've started clearing some space across the ravine to be my own nest. I like the cave but it's a bit lonely in it by myself." Shade told Morpheus as he stood aside to let him also jump down into the ravine. It was much less overgrown within, some care clearly taken in maintaining the space somewhat. A single cat, or a mother with three kittens, didn't need that much but it was obvious a lot more cats could live there if a real effort went underway to clean it all up.

Morpheus was a lot of things. An observer, a provider, sometimes a bit of a grouch. But he was no more athletic then the next cat on the street with enough skill and physical prowess to survive. But he was also a rather proud tom who did not wish to ask for help or look weak so he was thankful when Shade did not offer up help or so much as an apology at the evident struggle the darker older tom had went through moments ago to follow the other up the tree because if he had Morpheus would definitely be a unhappy camper. No more then the ache in his muscles from the struggle. He really needed to get back to getting fit again; he'd slacked in that regard as of late. But in his defense he was never one who enjoyed climbing trees whether standing tall and proud or lying on the ground; especially if it was connected to that.
The dark male focused on what Shade was talking about so that he did not look down as he followed the other to the next part of their short journey to the younger feline's humble abode. The darkling was not too fond of heights and he had to stare straight at the other in fear he'd look down. He'd had that fear since he was a kit when his father had played a prank on him by taking him as a young kit up a tree and left him there as what he had thought was fun but had scarred the tom-kit for life and now his face was pinched so tightly and his stare so intent on Shade's face that he had looked as if he was mad at the other for whatever reason despite it not being true.
"It is a surprise to think cats are now gathering together for survival. Nature is a peculiar thing." Morpheus finally spoke up his voice was a tad bid strained as he followed the line of sight of the other as Shade made his way down the tree that looked aged from use and down below to were a ledge sat with brambles decorating it.
He swallowed thickly hoping he didn't fall and turned himself around slightly so that if he had to make the journey he would do it with his back end first in fear he'd pass out from an anxiety attack and fall to such harsh injuries or death. His claws scraped loudly like velcro as he inch by inch slid his way down and only let out an audible breath of fresh air once he was on solid ground again.
He glanced over at the other with a stressed quirk of whiskers. "I'm not a fan of heights." he confessed as he glanced back up the way they had come. "I cannot imagine living here as a kit." template by Magpie of Adoxography
