The way…? Oh, Snowy Owl wasn’t quite sure, not to mention, xe hardly knew about the forest any more than Cecil. The fork in the forest, where both sides of the forest trails had the same walls of trees leading down the path, were near indistinguishable. Either side had an equal probability of leading to the owl… or certain doom. But the feather was a crumb, a sign that the owl had passed through this area before. So, xe headed down the direction the feather’s tip had been pointing to.
Xe nudged a firm nose to the left road, mustering as much certainty as possible. There. Must be.
Xir paws trudged through the snow as xe followed the corridor of trees. Gazing at the pale landscape around them, which stood out even in the grayscale vision of night, xe noticed how much xir own fur blended in with the snow. In that same vein, xe wondered if the owl had blended in with the snow as well. The exact details of the owl’s facial features were hazy, and the view glances Snowy Owl had caught were quick, but from a distance, the owl looked like a shower of snowflakes.
Xe cast a glance at Cecil to make sure he was keeping up, when a shadow swept over his face from above. Xe looked up, and sure enough—
A flash of white blurred through the canopy. It was the owl.
Xe jabbed xir tail at the owl, and then started off after it. There! There! Hurry!
With xir attention trained on the sky, xe barely paid attention to the world that was right around xir… until it was too late.
Xe crashed right into a tree, sending a shock to the nearby branches that let blankets of snow fall over xir pelt. Xe quickly shook off the snow. But unfortunately, the owl was gone. Xe rushed to Cecil, xir face askance. You know where it went?
