Canarypaw looked thoughtful, her green eyes misting over momentarily as she thought. “I don’t know,” she said, her eyes clearing as she looked back up at Shellspots. “It doesn’t feel like they’re trying to say that something is ‘theirs’, it feels more like this mine is a physical thing that can be found. Though I suppose if it is StarClan’s it could still be found…” She cocked her head to the side in thought. She lifted her head as Flare spoke, nodding. “It does sound like it could be far away,” she meowed. That was part of what worried her. The feeling in her gut said it would be a long journey from where she was now. Who knew how long she would be gone? Or how far she’d have to travel? There were just so many unknowns. The apprentice gazed off across the plains to where the mountains were. Would she have to go there? It looked scary, but she knew that wherever this prophecy lead her, she would have to be brave. This wasn’t just about her anymore, but the entirety of RiverClan. But maybe it was beyond the forest? She remembered her first day lost in the forest and how scared she was, and how the StarClan cat had come to her in her dreams. That memory was enough to give her faith that StarClan would help her again. “That’s true,” Canarypaw said, brightening. “There’s lots of cats from all walks of life here in RiverClan. One of them might know what a ‘mine’ is already!” She walked over to Flare and pressed against him, a purr rumbling in her throat. “If you could ask your parents that would mean the world to me,” she said, and she meant it. It warmed her that Shellspots and Flare would do so much to help her figure out this confusing dream. Sure, it meant something for them too, but they could have just told her to figure it out on her own.

Shellspots || she/her || 41 moons Shellspots frowned as Canarypaw insisted that this “mine” was an actual thing, not just a placeholder word for something else. She had never heard of such a thing before, and that fact made her feel a bit inadequate. She trusted the young cat, however; as a medicine cat, of course she would be privy to things that Shellspots could never fully understand. She just had to believe that Canarypaw’s gut feelings would lead them on the correct path.
“I wouldn’t bother with asking the kittypet,” Shellspots said dismissively, referring to Dahlia. “If this really is some place far away, I doubt she would know about it.” The she-cat had spent her entire life living with twolegs, as far as Shellspots knew, and such a sheltered existence surely wouldn’t give her the knowledge they were looking for. She also didn’t want to encourage Noctus’ relationship with the pampered feline. He had been asking about taking his daughters and seeing her again, and she had been doing her best to be diplomatic about declining.
Flare’s parents, on the other paw…
“You might be on the right track,” the silver tabby agreed, nodding at Canarypaw. To her knowledge, Jay and Violet had traveled for quite some time before settling in the forest to raise their second litter, and she wouldn’t be surprised if they knew some useful information. Turning back to look at her deputy, Shellspots twitched her ears questioningly. “Do you think either of them would object to joining us? It’s still early, and if you put either of them on the dawn patrol it would be best to let them sleep, but…” she trailed off, hoping Flare would hear the rest of her sentence without her having to say it. But this is important. But we need answers as soon as possible, now that StarClan has finally spoken to us.

Flare gave Canarypaw a soft smile as she brightened up at the reminder they had resources. He would have asked his parents whether she asked for it or not, but he was glad he could help her. That smile grew just a teeny bit tense though, at Shellspots's obvious dismissal of Dahlia.
She hadn't even used Dahlia's name! Just calling her 'the kittypet'. Like she wasn't an individual cat worthy of respect just because she lived with twolegs. Which was honestly ridiculous. He didn't understand what Shellspots had against kittypets, considering his mother had been one in the past.
Actually, that gave him an idea! "I'll get one of them right now!" he meowed to both of them. Then he made his way back toward the camp. Now of his two parents, USUALLY it was Jay Flare bothered in the morning. Whether it was a product of his life as a loner or not, he was normally the easiest to wake in the morning.
But Flare had a point to make, and Shellspots DID say to get the one he wouldn't put on dawn patrol... So Flare ducked his head and carefully entered the warriors den and picked his way toward the part of the den his parents slept in. He prodded Violet gently in the shoulder and whispered, "Mom, Violet, Mom. Wake up, I need your help!"

violet Violet found herself sitting in a tree. This was odd, since she had never been much for climbing, yet here she was. The branches billowed around her, moving in a wind that she herself didn't feel. That also struck her as odd, but only distantly. One of the branches seemed to be prodding her, which was not very comfortable. Another oddity: she could not see the branch that was bothering her. She opened her eyes to find not a branch, but her eldest, Flare, to be the source of the disturbance. Ah, that makes more sense, she thought fuzzily. The fog in her brain cleared at the sense of urgency in his tone. "Help?" she whispered sharply, suddenly alert, "What's going on?" And why would he wake her but no one else? The rest of the den appeared to be asleep still, Jay deep in slumber where they had laid down together, the other dark shapes of Noctus and Pandora, and the comparatively bright Clover. Not even the dawn patrol was up, she realized, taking in the sleeping presence of all her peers and the darkness outside the den. What if it's something to do with the apprentices? Her heart seized up, and she forced herself to stay calm; she didn't know what they were dealing with. She followed Flare uneasily out of the den, into the pre-dawn dark. The camp was empty, as she would have expected, but as they made their way across the empty camp and towards the river, two shapes started to come into focus. It was hard to make out by sight, but the scents were familiar. Shellspots and Canarypaw? Seeing the company did not answer any questions, but at the very least no one looked injured, or even particularly rattled. A modicum of tension left her, but not enough for her to let her guard down completely.

canarypaw • she/her • 11 moons • riverclan • bioRiver Moon, Day 19. Just before dawn. Kaeldra , Riley , Sigh Canarypaw cocked her head to one side as Shellspots refused to use Dahlia’s name, confused as to why she had been reduced to ‘the kittypet’ instead of Dahlia. This wasn’t really the time to ask such questions, though, she decided. She would simply have to remember later to ask about how dismissive she sounded about Dahlia, who could know something if she had other friends like Noctus that traveled. Thankfully Shellspots did seem to think asking one of Flare’s parents would be a good idea. She brightened visibly when Flare said he’d go get one of them right away. Her heart was full of hope that Jay or Violet could help them discern what a ‘mine’ was. Then Flare was off, slipping back into the camp to go prod awake one of his parents to ask them to come join the entourage. The tabby had to knead her front paws to keep from circling as they waited. Then Violet came into view and she popped up onto her paws, tail high and a smile on her face. Once the older warrior drew nearer, she meowed, “Hi, Violet! Maybe you can help us with something…” Quickly she went over the prophecy with Violet, so she didn’t feel completely confused as to what was happening. “The only thing is, we can’t figure out what a ‘mine’ is. We’ve never heard of it before. Do you have any ideas?” she asked.

Shellspots || she/her || 41 moons Before she could say any more, Flare was off to go fetch one of his parents. She did secretly hope that he would choose to wake Jay, as the stoic tom seemed to have a wealth of knowledge that they hadn’t even begun to learn the depths of. But Violet would certainly be welcome too, and she had a hunch that Flare might bring her along instead, since he had a tendency to place his father on the dawn patrol.
Her hunch proved correct when two feline shapes came into view, Violet’s long coat giving her away before she could make out the finer details. The older she-cat looked rather concerned. That must have been a worrying wake up call, the silver queen thought sympathetically, imagining her own thought process if one of her kits came to her before dawn and prodded her awake.
“Thank you for joining us, Violet. I’m sorry to pull you from your nest so early,” Shellspots said, hoping Violet would be agreeable enough to help with their questions. She let Canarypaw take over then, explaining her dream and the prophecy for a third time that night. Realizing what a toll this might take on the apprentice, she quietly decided to let Canarypaw take the day off from training and get some rest. They would need to figure out her new training schedule, anyway.
Once the young tabby she-cat had finished, Shellspots looked back to Violet with curious eyes.
“So you see our problem. I had thought perhaps it was something that belonged to StarClan, but Canarypaw seems convinced it means something else, and she is the one who had the dream after all. I know you travelled for some time before joining us, do you have any insights?”

violet Everyone else seemed calm, and Violet tentatively considered relaxing. "Not to worry, I'm happy to help."A prophecy, huh? It seemed there was something to Flare's stories after all. Not that she had doubted them, exactly, but it was one thing to hear about great clans receiving mysterious messages from the starts and quite another to actually see it happening. Most of Violet's remaining worry drained away at Canarypaw's enthusiasm. She seemed more mature than Violet's own kits at times, in spite of being a few moons younger. Despite her youth, Violet thought she was a good, if surprising, choice of recipient for a prophecy. Violet send her silent approval up to the cats in the stars. "A mine..." She shuffled through her memories. "Yes, I think both of you are right, Canarypaw and Flare. It is, as far as I know, a sort of tunnel in stone." That was how it had been described to her, at least. "I've heard of it before, and heard it called a 'mine', though I'm not sure where one would find such a thing around here. There must be one relatively nearby though, otherwise I wouldn't have heard of it."As happy as she was to have answered part of the question, she realized how little her answer furthered Canarypaw's mission. They had already guessed most of what she knew, and she didn't know how to actually find the mine. Violet sighed. "I wish I could be of more help. I don't think Jay is any more familiar with the mine than I am. Although..." She thought about it for another moment, desperate to give more help than the dregs she'd managed thus far. "I'd say you'd have more luck asking outsiders. Some of the cats in the twolegplace might know, since that's where I heard of it, and 'mine' is one of those strange twoleg phrases, I believe. Or anyone prone to wandering could know, since they might've actually gone." She looked to Shellspots. "It could be something to ask any potential recruits? Even if they don't want to join, they might be able to help Canarypaw find this mine."

canarypaw • she/her • 11 moons • riverclan • bioRiver Moon, Day 19. Just before dawn. Kaeldra , Riley , Sigh Canarypaw hadn’t considered that it might be something that required digging or climbing, but now that Flare had mentioned it that sounded like a good reason to think of it as a place rather than something that belonged to StarClan. Though, perhaps the mine belonged to StarClan and it was a double meaning. She couldn’t be for sure just yet. She listened intently to Violet’s answer, nodding as she spoke. “A tunnel in stone,” she murmured out loud, thinking how odd that would be. Stone was so solid! But then again, she didn’t know how much power StarClan had. They could possibly have the power to dig out rock. Such a thing would take a regular cat many moons of clawing, but dead cats with the power of the stars in their paws… Her attention was brought back as Violet started speaking again. Ah, so it was a twoleg thing. Maybe the mine was a twoleg thing too, but StarClan took it over? There were many things to puzzle out about this prophecy and the mysterious mine. But at the very least they did know it was a place, and that it would be where there was stone. “Thank you, Violet,” she said earnestly. “This is really helpful. And even though you don’t know where the mine is, like you said we could ask outsiders or cats in twolegplace. Plus we know it’s got to be somewhere where there’s rock, since the tunnel is made out of stone, right? We’ll figure this out.”

Shellspots || she/her || 41 moons It seemed as if they had been on the right track, and Shellspots breathed a quiet sigh of relief as Violet explained exactly what a mine was.
A tunnel carved out of stone! What a curious thing. She supposed the power of StarClan was not to be underestimated, no matter how impossible the feat would be for those yet to join them. That is, until Violet added that these “mines” were a twoleg phenomenon, and found herself a bit upset at how much more sense that made.
“Yes, any extra bit of knowledge is useful,” the silver tabby agreed, nodding along with Canarypaw’s thanks. “Even if we’re not sure exactly where it is, knowing what we’re looking for will make the search that much easier.”
Shellspots was silent for a moment as she considered the logistics of it all.
“You’re right, we’ll have to let the rest of the Clan know as soon as possible so they can inquire with any cats they come across. Keeping it a secret will only hinder our progress,” she said, glancing at Canarypaw. She hoped the apprentice would be alright with this, but so far she hadn’t given Shellspots any reason to worry. “We’ll make an announcement later today, perhaps at sunhigh? We’ll tell everyone to make sure to ask any potential recruits about knowledge they might have, along with the usual invitation to join the Clan.” Now Shellspots turned her gaze to Flare, seeking his agreement. The two of them would have to present a united front on this to emphasize how important it was.
The excitement and nervous energy that had been prickling through Shellspots’ fur settled now into a calm determination as their plan of action came together. It might take time, but they had a clear path forward.
