Spider || Tom || 7 moons
A grin stretched across Spider’s face at his mother’s teasing response. He supposed he and his littermates could be a bit of a pawful, especially when they were meant to be going to sleep but were still bright eyed, begging for just one more story, please?
Watching as she picked a spot of dirt from between her claws, Spider realized perhaps she was right; despite being a little winded, he’d already nearly recovered from the impromptu race and his paws were prickling with energy again.
Then she began circling around him, and the young tom tried his best to keep his eyes on her while remaining seated. A paw batting at his tail had him spinning to meet her gaze, pelt twitching as he absorbed her words. While his muddy predicament was irritating and embarrassing, Violet had a point. If his race with her had been more than just a game, if he’d been trying to outrun her and get away, it wouldn’t matter that it “wasn’t fair”. He would just become a muddy scrap of fur on the forest floor.
So he had to analyze the situation, as she said, and see how he could use this to his advantage.
He waited just a couple of heartbeats before leaping after her into the undergrowth, determined to keep up despite his soggy fur. This would be good practice for if he ever ran into this situation again, but against an opponent much less forgiving than Violet.
“The obvious thing to say is that I’m smaller than you,” he started, still a few tail-lengths behind her. “So I’d have the advantage in being able to slip through tight spaces that you couldn’t get to as easily.” He quickly squeezed through a gap between two bushes as if to prove his point, and in doing so shortened the distance between them. ”And my dirty fur isn’t all bad.” Plunging into the dense foliage once more and disappearing, Spider did his best to hurry along quietly. Violet wasn’t running quite as fast as she had in their race, so he had the opportunity to be a bit tricky rather than sprinting blindly in the same direction.
After a short while of sneaking through the undergrowth, he leaped from the bushes in his mother’s general direction, intending to fall in step beside her. If he gave her a bit of a surprise in the process, that would be all the better.
“It works really well as camouflage!”
