Chester didn't know how he thought his request would have gone. Maybe he thought Stellar would just smile, nod, and agree and that would be it. He'd slink back into his solitary life in the woods, and Stone would grow up happy and healthy under the care of a better cat than him. But that wasn't how it went at all. Under Steller's words, Chester shrank. Any words of protest fell dead on his tongue. He was a murderer. He never cared for another life in his life. How could he take care of this one? There was no end to the number of reasons he wasn't good for Stone, but none of them would leave his lips.[break][break]

Listless, his rump fell to the ground and his back slouched. Deeply chastised, he gave a weak nod as Stellar entered the den. As fate would have it, Chester didn't notice that Stone had caught their conversation. He thought the young feline to still be blissfully asleep. So he lingered. As the sun stretched higher into the sky, he wondered if he was really going the right thin as Stellar seemed to imply. If Stone learned from him, would he grow into something other than a killer?[break][break]

The brutish tom sighed. He couldn't hide out here forever. With guilty, lingering steps, he slowly returned to the den. Peeking into the den, he was surprised to see Stone and Stellar bent over the nest. He wasn't sure how long kits slept, but he thought it was longer than that. Awkward and unsure, he stood at the entrance. "Did you rest well?" He'd always been a cat of few words, but now, he wished he wasn't. He didn't know what to say to make things right.
