Sleepy eyes blinked open to the setting sun. At first, the prickly tom was surprised to feel a warm body pressed against his sides. His sleep-addled mind failed recognize Stone at first. But what came quickly after was worry. Was the little one still breathing? He hadn't accidently crushed him had he? A wash of relief followed as he watched the injured kit take one breath after another. Chester nudged him lightly, "It's time to go." As much as he wished to let Stone rest longer, the kit needed treatment, and he was likely hungry. While Chester could easily provide a meal, treatment was not so easy for the battle-scarred tom.[break][break]
Once Stone was ready, Chester gently grabbed his scruff and cautiously but swiftly descended the tree. This time, he attempted to make the journey as comfortable as possible for his passenger. The pair arrived near Stellar's home as the barest glimpses of the sun was left on the horizon. Amidst the trees, the shadows had taken over. He set Stone down on the other side of a brush separating them from Stellar's abode. Sitting, he addressed the young tom, speaking fondly, "You'll be meeting Stellar. She's a beautiful and kind she-cat that saved me when I was badly injured after..." Chester paused. His ears drooped and for the first time, he expressed remorse for his actions. "I killed my brother."[break][break]
Even after the battle, he hadn't been saddened or burdened by what he'd done or anything he'd done in the past. In his mind, they'd had deserved it. Now, after meeting Stellar and his conversation with Hollow, he was beginning to realize the error of his ways. Little by little, he wanted to be better.[break][break]
"You can trust her. She'll be able to treat your wounds." And maybe take you in. Starclan knew she would make a better parent than he would ever be. He had never imagined himself with kids, adopted or biological. Chester didn't think he deserved to have them or was cut to taking care of them well. The only examples he had in his life were rather poor after all. He never knew his father, and his mother had abandoned him. It wasn't much to go off of. Given his history as well, he was probably more of a danger than anything.[break][break]
Picking Stone up again, he pushed through the brush to reveal Stellar's home on the other side. Gently placing the kit on the ground, he softly called out into the growing night, "Stellar?" She was a she-cat that preferred the night, but he was still unsure if she was around or possibly asleep at this time.

Stone's tiny little form peacefully slept, safely cradled by his new guardian. The kitten had knocked out so fast after the two of them had nestled up onto the branch.
Unbeknownst to the frail feline, his companion had awoken. Still deep in his slumber, he'd barely begun to wake up as Chester gently nudged him.
A weak mewl escaped his jaws as the kitten's eyes slowly fluttered open. His vision took what felt like eons to focus. Blink after blink, he groggily looked around, holding the same position.
Where... was he?
Stone cautiously lifted his head as his vision finally adjusted. It all slowly began to come back to him.
Oh. Yeah... He thought as he slowly looked over at Chester. He paused. Had the tom stayed there all night with him? The kitten did his best to keep a straight face in attempt to hide at his shame. One could only hope he'd hadn't completely thrown off Chester's errands.
Trying to get off of the topic, Stone turned his attention towards the horridly sore spot on his side. The tom grimaced at the sight; somehow seeing it made it hurt even more.
His fur was dappled with dried blood - while he wasn't actively bleeding, it certainly wasn't... good looking, either.
The tabby tom was soon picked up - it was time to relocate.
The trip this time around was arguably sooner. While it wasn't without its grunts and sharp pains, it was certainly improved.
Despite still feeling exhausted, Stone couldn't help it as his heart began to race when they'd arrived at their destination.
The kitten cautiously eyed the bush, and then the rest of their forest-y surroundings. His head snapped in Chester's direction as he began to speak.
Ear flicking and head tilting, Stone listened as intently as his still fuzzy mind allowed for. He couldn't help it as his fur fluffed a little as the sentences continued on. Especially at the reveal of... an important part of Chester's past.
He killed... his brother?! Eyes wide, he slowly nodded in agreement, doing his best to will himself into a calmer state. He wasn't feeling well - surely, he'd accidentally heard it... just horribly... wrong...?
And if he didn't hear wrong?
Stone was snapped out of his intense train of thought as Chester reminded him of the true situation at hand; he was about to meet someone.
Of all the things to send him into a panic, it was, for whatever reason, this. He watched with bated breath as he was once again picked up and brought to the entrance of a den.
Heart racing, Stone ignored every last bit of common sense that was left inside of him and threw himself against Chester's leg, gently hissing in pain as he did so.
Well, any and all worries about Chester's reveal had instantly vanished. He quietly snuggled up against the battle-scarred tom's leg, watching the world in front of him warily.

She loved this time of the day. Well more like night no doubt. When the blue of the sky turned into an ashy grey and darker still until it was nothing but an inky vastness sparkling with twinkling lights above. The moon was high in the sky tonight giving just enough light to guide any cat's wandering path but Stellar laid out carefully along the thickest branch at the highest point she could reach without the branch snapping under her weight just to watch the sunset. Her belly had been full and she'd taken a nice leisurely walk around the area right before taking her perch. Despite the relaxing activities her mind still raced over the troubles she felt; mainly her last encounter with Chester wondering just how she could get him to relax around her and let her in.
With the slightest of breeze that ruffled her long thick fur came with it not the scent of others but the voice that it carried from below. The silver tabby's head snapped downwards as if her green eyes could see below through the leaves and branches to the ground below; sure it wasn't the tallest tree in the forest but it was tall enough for her not to see the two figures among the foliage around her. She liked this point of view because not only was the air cooler up here especially at night giving relief to the ever growing warmth and humidity but also a great view.
But there was the present matter of others in her area of the woods to deal with. Her heart rate picked up when she heard her name being called just ever so faintly that had her scrambling down from her branch. She landed with a thump on the ground and shook herself as she padded forward with eagerness as her eyes sparkled in the moonlight with excitement. Chester came back; it was much sooner than his usual timing too so she could only hope that he'd changed him mind a bout staying away.
"Chester, you're back. I wasn't expecting you so soon." she smiled warmly before her eyes scanned his features to realize that there was a strange worry etched on it that had little to do with him being in her presence.
"What is it? What's the mat-" she heard it then; the little hiss and whimper of pain causing her eyes to fall slightly lower in an instant.
"What is that you have Chester? Did you bring me an injured squirrel or something? Gracious, you don't bring me live prey as a gift before. Got some conscious in you? Couldn't finish the poor thing off, hmm?" she teased but as she lowered herself slightly to peer through the darkness at the thing against his leg her skin prickled as two golden eyes stared back at her.
"Oh dear," she swallowed realizing it was not a rodent but in fact...a kitten. "You're not a squirrel at all, are you?" she took a breath and raised her eyes to Chester but said nothing at first.
She wouldn't ask any questions. Not when the scent of blood invaded her nostrils hinting at an open injury. Her face set grimly as she rose to her full height and then tipped her head towards her nest that lay between the large roots of the tree and a hollowed out log.
"Inside, quickly. Place them in my nest and then go fetch some water; you know that pond we were at a few day ago? There should be some moss growing on some rocks under that large tree partly embedded in the water - it's the one where the turtles and frogs lay on. Can't miss it. Grab some of that moss and soak it in water for me." she instructed before she was slipping away and around the tree to dig beneath a root where a rock was wedged.
She grabbed a few clumps of earthy smelling plants before rounding the corner again to enter her little den and looked at the small feline inside. She sighed and set the bundle down.
"What's your name, little one? I'm Stellar, I'm a friend of Chester's." she offered a warm smile hoping to calm the little tom.
It was unusual for Chester to be in the company of other cats let alone finding a kit. He never struck her as the type to find strays as he was against to all company besides her own it seemed but to see him finding a stray and seeking help for it was a good sign; perhaps his humanity was still in fact there and his emotions were not killed off after what had happened. She shuffled through the herbs absently and hummed lightly.
"There's nothing to fear here; not from me and not from Chester either - he's not as tough and bad as he likes himself to think." she gave a playful wink trying to ease the tension in the small one.
Hearing the movement behind her she peeked over her shoulder and smiled slightly at Chester's return making her shift back into healer mode as she turned to the tom kit. "Alright, let's see that injury. Can you tell me what happened?" she asked kindly as she inched forward to peer at the matted blood on the kit's side.

Stellar's appearance was met with a warm smile from Chester. "Stellar," he repeated with relief and happiness, "It's nice to see you again, but..." He didn't need to finish his sentence nor did Stellar finish her question before the answer became clear. The lovely she-cat's eyes fell on the trembling Stone beside him. With how closely the little one clung to him, Chester couldn't help the protective instincts that rose in him. "It's okay," he purred.[break][break]
"It's not like that," he said awkwardly, unsure how to broach the subject now that he was here. It wasn't a squirrel or anything like that. Luckily, Stellar was quick-witted. Chester nodded, "Of course." Gently, he picked up Stone and quickly trotted over to Stellar's nest. Carefully placing the kitten in the center of the nest, he heaped up more of the foliage around Stone. Crouching to Stone's eye level, he nuzzled Stone, "It's going to be okay. Don't be afriad. I'll be right back." With those parting words, he turned and ran for the pond.[break][break]
Arriving at the pond, Chester fervently searched the area, "Large tree in the water... Where the turtles and frogs lay." In the waning light, it was harder to find than he'd expected, but the croaking of the frogs guided his way. "There!" he exclaimed wit relief. Bolting for the tree, he dug up some moss. Delicacy wasn't his forte and the bundle came up rough and ragged, but it seemed to suffice when he dipped it in the water. With his precious bundle gripped in his jaws, he rushed back as carefully as he could to the nest.[break][break]
Back at Stellar's home, he brought the moss up to Stellar and Stone, "Here, Stellar. Is there anything else you need?" He would get her whatever she needed. Putting the moss down, he looked worriedly at Stone. The task had taken longer than he'd anticipated. There wasn't much he could do to help the kit's injuries, but he could, at least, fetch herbs to a degree. The tom might get confused by all the different types but he'd do his best.

The ringing in his ears had returned as the silver tabby approached and began to talk to Chester. His mind whirled as he watched with bated breath, begging for his brain to attempt at processing any of the words.
Stone meekly poked his head out from behind Chester's leg in an attempt to get a closer look at the stranger, squinting in order to focus his vision.
Her eyes glowed in the dark of the night and were complimented by the softness of her plush, silver pelt. Her face was illuminated with warmth at the sight of Chester; she seemed thrilled to be able to see him again. He briefly wondered how often he'd dropped by to see her after she'd saved him.
Having forgotten to pay attention to the conversation, the kitten was caught by surprise as she suddenly lowered herself towards him. He quickly leaned back against Chester's leg, his heart racing as he stared at her, his own golden eyes wide with fear.
And, just like that, they were on the move again.
His body felt frozen as the three of them moved into a den, and he was placed onto a soft nest. His breath fastened as he looked around, trying his best to process it all. He heard the older cats exchange a few words as he stiffly folded himself into a huddled sitting position. The tom kept his gaze locked onto Chester, perking slightly as he reapproached.
His shot nerves were relieved as the tom nuzzled him. Instinctively, Stone leaned into the nuzzle, feeling a sense of calm wash over him. He looked up as the tom stood after having expressed how he was leaving.
Though Stone did hear that the tom was to return, he couldn't help the panic that filled him as the scarred tabby stood and turned away. He stumbled up in an attempt to follow as the tom left the den, letting out a broken-sounding pained squeak. How was he supposed to know that he would truly return? Even though the tom had just met him and had no prior obligation to help him out, the kitten couldn't help the desperate cry his heart gave for some kind of familiarity. And in that moment, that sense of familiarity in this new environment, was unfortunately the departing tom.
Only a few stiff steps were taken successfully before his weak legs gave in. Stone fell into the nest, letting out a muffled cry. Despite the rest he'd gotten earlier, the kitten was still so, so weak. An amalgamation of frustration, fear and pain welled within the tom as he kept his attention glued to where the tom had left, doing his best to ignore the cries his body gave as he sat back up.
Legs trembling as he refused to lay down, Stone's head snapped towards Steller as she introduced herself. He hadn't even noticed that she'd left. He cautiously held eye contact with her, before snapping his attention to observe as she began to mess with various different herbs. Her question was left hanging in the air - the tom didn't have the mental energy to even consider finding a way to tell his new name to her.
He watched as she calmly sorted through the herbs, his ears flicking as she began to hum. He tilted his head as she began to speak, nodding a bit as she mentioned Chester. He agreed; despite the tom's big scary looks, he had been nothing but kind to him.
Almost as if on cue, the scarred tabby returned. A wave of relief crashed over Stone, as he let out a breath he'd failed to realize that he was holding.
His fur prickled as Steller approached to get a look at the wound the rats had given him. He leaned away instinctively as she did so. Sheepishly, he looked to Chester, unsure of what to do, and almost pleading for help.

The kitten was so small. So fragile. And to see such uncertainty and fear in the young one's eyes tugged on her heart strings. Knowing not only was he hurting from unknown causes of injury but also feeling so scared right now was understandable yet very sad; it made the silver tabby want to curl around him and never let him leave the nest if she could help it. So many questions lingered at the forefront of her mind - where had he come from? How did Chester find him? And why on earth had he not sought her out sooner. But, those were questions for a different time and instead she placed her best bedside manners she could. Not like it was a hard feat to do. Her heart ached for the little one; too weak to stand on his own but desperate not to be alone. Ironically to find how a large scarred tom like Chester was the kit's only comfort.
Stellar did not mind the lack of answers to her questions; whether from fear or from lack of not knowing how to actually form the answers requested of him the kit said nothing so she allowed her own calm voice to fill the silence around them with mindless words in hopes it would soothe the tension in the smaller feline. Silence was almost as dangerous as words and if she could let the kit focus on what she was saying - meaningless as it may have sounded at that moment in time, it would help him not focus on his fear, pain, and any other emotion he may be experiencing right now.
When Chester returned she could see the tension leaving the kitten slightly and it made her take pause as she glanced between the two but said nothing; hero complex no doubt. A small smile tugged at her maw as she finished setting the piles of colorful herbs and plants to the side before turning her attention to Chester. Keeping her tone soft and calm she nodded towards the bundle of moss.
"He'll need some water no doubt here in a little bit. For now though, go ahead and set that ball of moss on that bark slab there. I need to assess the demand done to see just what's the matter. But for right now you can stay here...keep him calm if you can." she shuffled towards the kit.
She allowed a soft rumble to vibrate her chest in soothing purrs as she nudged along the matted fur as lightly as she could. Ignoring the kit's discomfort at her nearness for the time being; she kept things professional and open so that he did not get surprised.
"Let's see here." she murmured as she examined the torn flesh beneath the matting and hummed to herself thoughtfully.
"If you'd like to keep your paws busy Chester, grab that moss you just brought in and clean off the mess here while I make some paste for his injuries okay?" she offered as she grabbed a bundle of herbs to begin chewing up into a pulp.
She figured that the kit would feel a bit more comfortable if Chester was the one who was helping out a bit; to distract both toms from their own thoughts. The one thing Stellar had come to know quickly was to keep everyone busy to not only get the events over with quickly but to also distract each other from having an episode or something. Cats could sense each other's emotions well enough as it was. Having a patient so young was always a tricky and stressful situation for anyone; the tabby couldn't imagine how panicked the tom must have been when he'd found the tom-kit.
"So, Chester." she glanced up at the tom; speaking between chews. "Would you like to tell me how this happened? Fill me in on the details." she spat the green blob onto a leave off to the side before rising to her feet to go into a dark corner of the small den area to swipe a stick on the ground through some cobwebs that were piling in the corner from some branches.
"Where is his family?" she shot over her shoulder at the tom with narrowed eyes wondering why a kit like that would be out alone. A miracle to be sure that he had survived as long as he had.
Padding back over to the nest she set the stick with wrapped cobwebs down and grabbed a little seed from the bundle of herbs and held it out towards the kit. "It'll help with any pain you have..." she blinked at him before her eyes lit up and she set it down in front of the kit.
"Oh! Hold on a moment; this'll make it go down faster, give me a moment before you take it." the tabby darted from the den and was gone for a few moment before she was suddenly back with a sticky looking leaf.
She plopped it down on the ground and peeled the edges back to find a few globs of honey resting on the leaf. She took the seed and dropped it into the stickiness before offering it again. "Who said medicine had to be yucky?" she gave a playful wink to the kit before leaving him to eat it in peace.

Chester felt quite lost amidst the situation. Awkward and unsure, he didn't know where to put his paws or how he could possibly help make things better. All he could do was listen to Stellar and do as the she-cat said. He tried for a reassuring look and another murmured, "It's okay," in response to Stone's unsure eyes. Chester felt so inconsequential being that a few words was all he could offer the scared kit. Picking up the moss, he carried the precious bundle precariously to deposit it on the bark slab. Looking at it now, he wondered if he'd gathered enough. It seemed far too little for the injuries they were for.[break][break]
Turning around, he quickly moved to Stone's side. Even though Stellar meant no harm, one couldn't help the fear. Chester had been the same, though it had been a fear disguised with anger at the time. Even though he wasn't of much help, he could try to provide some comfort. Curling himself slightly around Stone, he look at the little one, "It's okay," the only words he could offer.[break][break]
The scarred tom startled when Stellar told him to clean off the wound with the moss, "Ah, yes!" Bouncing back up, he grabbed the moss and awkwardly and gingerly tried to clean Stone. He wasn't sure he was doing it right. He'd always been the one treated, never the one treating others. Chester frowned, looking at the mess. Was this okay? It didn't seem like it at all.[break][break]
Setting the moss down, he crouched beside Stone. "I found him by the river. He was already injured then," he started his story, suddenly unconfident. What if Stellar didn't believe him? What if she thought he'd killed Stone's parents and kidnapped him? He'd known Stellar for a while now, but the narrowed gaze she'd directed at him felt full of suspicion. Just like the eyes that had been turned on him in the past. Ones that called him liar and thief just from seeing him. "I don't know what happened," he mumbled, "But he doesn't have a family." Or at least, that was what Chester thought based on when he'd asked.

The tiny feline watched with cautious wide eyes as the two adults hustled around the den. He, meanwhile, was struggling to process it all.
He was stuck in his head. Though it was not unusual for the silent tabby, it was certainly different this time around.
His mind was a frenzied mess. He couldn't stave off the images of the rats, his own blood... His friend...
He tightly closed his eyes, shaking his head before blinking them open once more as someone curled around him.
Stone's heartrate seemed to calm as he leaned into the older tom's side.
"It's okay," Chester had murmured to him.
His head tilted as the scarred individual suddenly got up and returned with the moss ball he'd been sent away for earlier.
The tom's fur bristled as the wet moss was brushed against his wound. He did his best not to squirm, keeping his gaze locked onto Chester as he worked. He did his best not to let out any pained grunts, and instead focused his energy onto the tom. A silent, trusting, yet hurting look was evident on his face as he allowed the tom to aid him.
Once Chester had finished cleaning his wound, Stone leaned over to inspect the now inflamed, yet clean site. He nuzzled his muzzle around the fur, inspecting it intensely. What was the point of that? It seemed to have only made it hurt more....
He picked up his head as Stellar reapproached, tilting his head as she set down a stick wrapped in cobwebs and a small bundle of seeds.
The kit curiously leaned towards them, cautiously leaning forward to attempt to catch the scents of the items.
He snapped his head back as the she-cat told him to wait before she returned with a sweet substance.
Stone watched as she combined the seed with the honey, an ear flicking as she mentioned something about it being sweet. His eyes held a steady gaze on the concoction.
Moments passed as he considered the options. He leaned towards it, sniffing at the honey and sneezing at the strong, sweet scent.
The kitten blinked up to Stellar and looked to Chester, before lapping up the medication.

It wasn't her first time patching someone up. Perhaps not someone as young as this little kitten but there was a first for everything. Everything in Stellar was urging her to care for the kitten; although never having kits of her own she found it came natural for her to be fussy when it came to the tabby tom. She needed to be busy as much as Chester it seemed as well as he seemed to jump at the chance to be useful. There was not much they could do in this situation besides dressing the artificial wounds the kit had and let him rest. The silver tabby molly could help the process to heal Stone's body but it was up to the kitten to push forward to heal the mental part of himself but since he had yet to say a single word since Chester had brought him to her she worried he may still be in shock. As he probably should be.
Her idle questions for answers came up short when Chester seemed to not know a lot about the kitten and Stellar wondered if the kitten had said anything to the larger tom at all. How long ago had the tom found the kit anyway? Had Stone been in pain for days before Chester stumbled upon him or did the scarred tom find him in the midst of the trouble the kit had gotten himself into? Her golden eyes softened when they looked at the fluffy tabby kit that lay in her nest. When Chester spoke up saying he didn't have a family her whiskers twitched a bit in surprised concern. If he had no family as far as Chester knew of...how long had Stone been on his own and survived this long?
Swallowing the overwhelming feeling to fuss around or say something that may make things worse or cause the kitten to panic she went about getting the chewed up pulp of herbs she'd been working on and shuffling closer to the kitten as he licked up the treat of honey; content to see the poppy seed was gone and that he was simply polishing off the honey she'd gathered from the bee hive she had nearby. The poppy seed would help with the pain and hopefully relax the tiny thing enough to rest. She inspected his fur which was wet from the moss wash down Chester had given the kitten and nodded approvingly before she was smearing the goop into the fur; making sure to get it into the wound - allowing a little chirping sound to escape to the little one as a way of reassurance knowing it must be painful but the herbs would help. After his fur was coated with the substance and rubbed into his fur she grabbed the wrapped stick of cobwebs and began plucking at them carefully with her claws to try and unweave the mass and began draping it over the mess she'd made from the poultice on Stone's fur.
"This should help it. His wounds are not deep and it should start healing and scabbing over within a few days. The herbs will do it's work and these cobwebs will help keep moisture off him and any debris. I'll have to change it out daily though with fresh cobwebs." Stellar mused to fill the silence in the den as much as a way to reassure both toms that everything would be okay in time. Despite not being one who was known for making friendships with others or bonding Chester seemed rather concerned so Stellar wanted to ease his worry.
Once she was done she sat back and sighed examining her work before turning her head to look at the scarred tom. She blinked at him without a word for a moment; her gaze studied him as if she was trying to find the answers on his face that she had in her head but when she didn't seem to find what she was looking for she turned her gaze to Stone.
"You're safe here, little one. Why don't you rest okay? If you wish to tell us what happened...you can. It'll help us figure out how to help you further - but no pressure okay? Take your time and give yourself the opportunity to heal." she offered kindly before turning her glance to Chester; her gaze softening slightly.
"Feel free to stay as long as you both need. If you want to talk...you know where to find me." she padded past Chester, pausing to headbutt him gently; her voice lowering for only him.
"He'll be fine, Chester. He's safe now. You did well." she purred with a fond gleam in her eyes. "I'm going to go find us something to eat real quick. Why don't you take a rest with him okay? The nest is plenty big enough for both of you." there was a slight teasing in her tone before she was brushing past them to slip outside to go hunt.
Chester must have been tired from stress and Stellar knew far better then most how mental stress can take a toll on the body as well. She knew how Chester could get and it reminded her of that first time she'd come across him; like deja vu. She knew he was flight and didn't want to just be idle but she also knew with a smirk that if she didn't leave to go hunt that he would have and frankly she missed taking care of him. With her gone for a bit it would force him to stay - his moral compass would not allow him to leave the kit alone even if he knew Stellar was nearby.
By the time that she padded back into the nesting area a fine drizzle had started outside and she shook the wetness from her fur with a bit of distaste before padding over to the kit and rested the bird by him.
"I forgot to ask...." she knelt down beside the kit and studied his little features. "Do we have a name?" template by Magpie of Adoxography

He wasn't sure how much he was really helping. If anything, he felt awkward and out of place. But Stone seemed to need him there, and it made him feel a little less useless. As Stone's eyes flit between Stellar and himself, he tried again to sooth the little kit, "It's okay. Go ahead." His words didn't feel very effective. Repeating those selfsame words over and over, it made him feel all that much more futile.[break][break]
Without any tasks assigned to him, Chester didn't know what to do with his paws. He watched everything unfurl like a stranger looking on. Daily meant it was really bad, right? In the early days of his recovery, he hadn't done much more than sit around all day and lash out at Stellar over everything, much to his embarrassment remembering it. It sounded like Stone would have to stay here for a while. He should have been happy. It was what he had thought was best. Stellar would be a better caretaker than him. Stone would do better with the kind she-cat than a scarred tom like himself. But unexpectedly, Chester felt a deep sadness. He didn't really want to leave the kit.[break][break]
Chester blinked with surprise. He'd completely forgotten until Stellar mentioned the kit telling them what had happened. He hadn't told Stellar about Stone's condition. "He can't talk," he said almost hesitantly. Mentally, he reprimanded himself for forgetting such an important detail. It should have been one of the first things he'd said.[break][break]
The tom looked down as Stellar headbutted him, self-conscious, "Yeah, thank you." He didn't rely on others, typically. He was more than capable of taking care of himself, but in this situation, he had been helpless. Chester glanced at Stone. The thought of staying here, in one place for so long, made him uneasy, but Stone couldn't move. If he left, he couldn't take Stone with him. Even though it was the right thing for the both of them, he didn't want to leave Stone with Stellar.[break][break]
A small spark of hopefulness gleamed in his eyes, did I? Had he really done well? This time, had he made the right decision? Would it really be okay? He wasn't sure, but the reminder to rest didn't give him long to consider it. With the danger past, a weariness took over. Unexpectantly, his head fell to his paws. He had to stay awake, but his eyes fluttered shut. Just for a little bit, he had finally done well.[break][break]
He was quick to wake up when the sounds of Stellar's return reached his ears. His head shot back up, and he turned a sharp gaze on the entrance. Chester relaxed only when it was clear it was just Stellar, and a soft smile broke his features. "Umn, it's Stone," he answered awkwardly. It still didn't feel like a particularly good name, but it was the best he could come up with.

Drops of honey were dappled over the tabby kitten's whiskers as he lifted his head from the sticky leaf.
He swiped his tongue over his muzzle repeatedly, doing his best to retrieve the stray, sweet, drops. Eyes focusing on the annoyingly obvious and unneeded weight on his whiskers, Stone had begun to busy himself as the two older cats conversed. The environment around him was tuned out as he continuously licked his muzzle.
Suddenly, he felt something nestling in his side, near his wound-site. The tabby kitten's head swiveled around, his heart pounding as he half expected to see the rat from before latched onto him.
He squeaked, both out of pain and surprise, once his nervous system got with the program. Stone struggled, attempting to squirm away half-heartedly. He flicked an ear, stopping when he heard chirps. His body was moving too sluggishly. Had he been poisoned? She said it would help. How was this helping?
He froze, watching as his brain finally processed that it was Stellar beside him. Eyes still frenzied with panic, the kitten stiffly watched her apply the poultice onto his side.
The tomcat's mind raced. The entire situation had reminded him of the attack. Even though he knew he was nowhere near the rats, Stone couldn't help but feel uneased. He firmly shut his eyes - the pain from the wound dressing had ebbed into a dull, stinging, pulse. Especially as Stellar had moved away.
The older she-cat's words had thankfully somewhat snapped him out of the doom-spiral his brain was taking him for.
Stone forced himself to focus on the two felines in front of him. They sure did seem to have some kind of understanding of each other. He watched, curling his tail around himself with heavy eyelids, doing his best to stay awake as his mind began to wander.
He didn't want to sleep. The tiny kitten still felt as if a rat would jump out onto him at any given moment. Or that he would be stuck, once more, helplessly fighting a battle he couldn't win. The feeling tiny claws digging into him echoed throughout him as he turned his head to look at his dressed wound. Stone eyed the mushed herbs layered carefully onto his fur. He looked back around as Chester curled up beside him.
Suddenly, everything was calmer. A ringing in his ears stopped that he wasn't even aware was happening.
Stone blinked slowly, his eyelids dangerously dropping further with each blink. His breaths slowed as he looked up to the tom.
The next thing he knew, he was opening his eyes to a bird being dropped in front of him. Still laying against the scarred feline, the kitten groggily looked to Stellar as she kneeled in front of him and asked Chester his name.
He stared at the bird as the two talked, tiredly wondering to himself if he was hungry.
Eyes still fluttering in and out of sleep, the kit kept his head propped against Chester's side.

Stone, what an interesting name for him. She wondered if Chester gave it to him or if Stone himself had told him. He hadn't been vocal besides a few sounds since he had been first brought to her; the thought of him unable to speak still rung in her head. It must have been terrifying to endure what he had and unable to cry out for help...with no family in sight. She sighed and looked back out at the rain that was falling. She idly rose and grabbed a leaf to place outside of her den to capture the rainwater and paused there looking out in thought. There is not much that she could do for them now besides allowing them rest and time.
Stone was still so unsure of her and he was still scared. It would take time and rest for him to realize he was safe here and that he would not be harmed again. But he did not feel safe unless Chester was there with him. Made sense, a trauma response. But she would not turn either of them away, obviously.
She turned with a sigh and padded back towards the nest where the others rested and curled herself up beside Chester. "We will figure everything out further in the morning. But I am sure you both are tired. So sleep. If you need something to relax Chester I have more poppy seeds to help." she rested her head on her paws allowing her gaze to assess the sleepy kit beside her.
"You're safe, Stone. If you're hungry, eat. If not, don't worry about it - it'll be here tomorrow. Go ahead and get some rest when you're ready - Chester isn't going anywhere." she told him softly; her tail lightly draping along the kit's flank like a blanket before allowing her eyes to close and heave a deep exhale as if she too were bone wary.
In the morning at the crack of dawn before either awoke she was up. Bustling with half droopy eyes as she did her morning chores. Gathered fresh water, caught breakfast for them, and began sorting out her herbs for her next batch of paste to put onto the kitten's back. The air was fresh and damp with the scent of overnight rain so after she was done she took perch on a damp rock outside to take in the aftermath and to allow herself time to fully wake up while the other slept. When she heard movements within the den; she turned her head a moment to stare at her den thoughtfully before making her way over - popping her head in to see who was awake.
"I caught some breakfast if you're hungry." she nodded towards a pile beside the nest. template by Magpie of Adoxography

The pained squeak Stone emitted sent Chester into a panic. Stone was hurting! What was he supposed to do? How could he help? Uneasy, he settled himself closer to the little tomkit. For once in his life, he felt so, so awkward in his own paws. It was the first time he'd ever felt so helpless.[break][break]
With the treatment completed, Stone lulled into sleep against him and Stellar settled into place on his other side. The scarred tom looked at the little kit with a mixture of worry and warmth. What was he going to do with him? He nodded at Stellar's words, but he didn't think he'd be sleeping. He needed to keep watch so nothing happened. After the events of today, he felt like if he nodded off, something else would happen. He couldn't have that, but against his wishes, he felt the curtains of sleep pulling at his eyes.[break][break]
Chester snapped awake. He'd fallen asleep in a nest that wasn't his own. Much to his horror, he hadn't been the first cat awake. Stellar was no longer by his side. He was never this careless. Had he really been that tired? His eyes flicked to Stone. It had been much worse the kit. He was likely the most wiped out of them all. His eyes shifted to Stellar when the she-cat popped in. Food, right. It would be better to let Stone eat first. Who knows when the little kit last ate.[break][break]
Getting up quietly, he slipped outside to greet Stellar. He wanted Stone to rest more, but he also didn't want the kit to hear what he was going to say. "Stellar," his eyes fell to his paws briefly. Why did this feel so wrong? He'd known Stone for less than a day so this should have been easy. "I think you should take Stone." He wouldn't be a good father anyways. He couldn't stay in one place, and he was always getting into fights. It was only right that someone responsible took care of Stone. Stellar was the better choice between the two of them. She'd done a lot more for the kit than he had in the same time. Surely, Stone would be happier with her.

Stone did his best to keep his tired eyes open as Stellar gently encouraged him to eat the bird and soon curled up beside him. Any further conversation being made was immediately droned out as his eyes steadily focused on the carcass.
The dappled grey body lie still in front of him, the feathers on its wings in disarray. Its eyes were beady and lifeless, its beak closed against the floor as untold stories rested within the lifeless body.
The tomkit wondered how swiftly its death had been delivered to it. How Stellar had gone about taking down the swift creature.
He'd always been bad at hunting. Never quick enough, never strong enough to end the job quickly. As much as Mackerel had tried to teach him, the kitten was better off a scavenger than a fighter in any means.
His eyes rested on the bird's own pair, dissociating a bit as he was briefly reminded of Mackerel's own eyes.
Prior hints of hunger now vanished, Stone turned his head away from the prey, still resting against Chester as he forced his eyes shut.
He let his mind race as he did his best to get comfortable, his ears flicking as he tried to direct his attention to the gentle hum of the night.
Somehow, without him realizing, the kitten had nodded off and fallen into a deep, dreamless sleep.
It wasn't until he'd felt Chester slip out from under him that Stone woke up.
Groggy yellow eyes still adjusting to the morning light, the kitten quickly lifted his head and watched as Chester padded out of the den. He blinked, quickly taking a quick scan of the area. He was alone, with more food beside him. His tail flicked as he sat up. Briskly, he rose to his paws and wobblily followed after Chester, refusing to be alone.
His still weakened and sore muscles crying out in protest as he moved, the kitten's mind was oddly stiff and quiet as he brushed his non-wounded side against the wall.
Stone's ears swiveled forward as he heard Chester's voice say his name. Heart beginning to race, he listened on carefully. "I think you should take Stone." He'd murmured.
Oh.
An unexplainable sadness crawled up from his chest as he let his ears flatten against his head. It felt somewhat silly to feel so sad about Chester not wanting to keep him by. The tom had no prior obligation to keep him in his company - they barely even knew each other!
And yet, the tiny kitten couldn't help the hurt that sept into his soul.
Now what? If Chester were to leave him, eventually Stellar would, too. Plus, like Chester, she would have no reason to keep him around.
But he knew he needed someone's help. He was unable to care for himself, wounded or not - the kitten had always been lousy at hunting.
Stone turned his head towards the nest, seeing the mess it'd become during the three's slumber.
Perhaps he could be useful in aiding in the tidying of the den?
Stiffly, the kitten hobbled towards the nest, doing his best to sort the stray, dried moss strandsinto one uniform look. A frown was unknowingly crossing his face as he worked, Chester's words ringing in his ears.

Her gaze that had been so welcoming moments ago dimmed a bit at the look on the other feline's face. What he was so worried about now? Stone would be just fine, she'd tell him that over and over again until he either believed it or he saw it with his own two eyes but the look on his face hinted it had nothing to do with the kit's injuries. Her eyes widened when she registered the words. Her take Stone? What on earth was he talking about? Did he honestly believe he could show up for help and just abandon the kit on her doorstep just like that? She would take the kit, of course, she would. She wasn't heartless, after all. Obviously, the kit had some trauma he had been through but even those blind could see Stone would not leave without Chester.
"Chester," she began keeping her tone careful as she studied his features. "You cannot expect me to care for a kit I know nothing about like this; I would take him in a heartbeat, you know that, or else you wouldn't have thought to bring him here." She took a breath and shook her head as she gave him a searching look.
"But it is the most obvious thing in the world that Stone trusts you above all else. You saved him. You searched for help for him so that he would not die; do you honestly believe that Stone is better off in my care when you are everything he wants; what brings him comfort and a feeling of protection?" she said trying to keep the reprimanded tone from her voice.
"I know you are trying to do this out of the goodness of your heart, contrary to belief you do have a heart beneath all those scars and 'I don't care' attitude. So because of that, I know you care about that little tom in there." She jutted her chin towards her den; her eyes following only to catch the last moment that Stone's tail disappeared and her heart fell into her stomach.
He had heard, hadn't he? "Oh Stone," she murmured softly before turning her gaze back to Chester. "If you care about this tom like I think you do, you won't ever say something like that again. To care is to have someone else's best interest in mind; despite what you think - despite what you could imagine his life being if you left him here with me, Stone is so much more comfortable and happy when you are around. Perhaps, if he stayed with you you'll come to find out perhaps he is just what you need in your life." She padded past him and paused by the entrance to the den before looking over her shoulder at him.
"You have been handed an extraordinary opportunity Chester, you have wandered around far too long in our own head, it's time you start moving forward with purpose instead of wandering around like a lost soul haunted by memories. You are not that tom anymore, and you may not believe it now...but life does have a purpose and I think it has fallen right at your feet." She waited for a heartbeat to let that sink in before she slipped inside the den to find Stone busying himself with trying to clean up the mess of the nest from the night before.
The silver tabby sighed softly watching him, he had nothing to prove; he was just a kit who was handed bad luck. But he was still so young and had potential for his future, that meant nothing if he felt like everybody abandoned him. She padded forward and began helping him with the moss. She could not see his face but she could sense the turmoil he must be feeling right now.
"Hey." She bent down a little keeping her voice soft. "It's okay, we can go gather some fresh moss later..." she sighed and nudged his ear lightly with her nose; just a featherlight touch not wanting to scare him. "Despite what you heard, Chester does care about you..that is why he wishes you to stay with me. His problem is that he has his doubts, he is too much in his own head." she explained tilting her head at a funny angle to see his face like a funny bird, her eyes kind and encouraging.
"But you know what? I think he is just as scared as you are, he sees a lot of himself in you, and that scares him because he believes he is a bad guy not worthy of being needed by another. But at the end of the day, we live in the same world, you me, and him. We breathe the same air even if our pasts and upbringing are different. He'll come around, just give him time. I promise I won't let him abandon you, because despite his words...I think he really does like you." She gave him a small smile before nudging his head with hers and giving a warm purr.
"Now, why don't you grab something to eat and I'll take a look at your injuries to make sure they're fine." she offered while she straighten up and gave the kit some space in the meantime. template by Magpie of Adoxography
