Fire 6, 2021 | Galaria Since moving to the marshes, Luna’s training continued. She ran laps daily, under Morpheus’s supervision, to boost her strength and her stamina. She climbed up trees, using her upper strength to hoist herself on to the branches. She crept through the muddy undergrowth, practicing her stealth, and her hunting skills. She had done a lot in a short period of time.
She was getting better at fighting, for sure, but she still had the problem of using her energy reserves up too quickly, or being too slow to react to attacks from her opponents. It was after another tiring session of fighting practice with Morpheus that she flopped on the ground and started panting hard. The sun’s stubborn heat didn’t make the situation better, even with the splotches of mud that were supposed to cool her fur down, but even that didn’t alleviate the feeling.
Turning to her side, she strained her neck up at her father. When her mouth opened, she burst out into a list of complaints. “Could we go for some water? I’m thirsty. And tired. And sore. And—”
She kept continuing the list, but at that point, she was just making up words. She wasn’t really thinking anymore, her head and her body was all mush now, as she often felt at the end of a practice session. Today was no different.

She was doing good. All things considering. Her battle skills were starting to come together as she felt more comfortable with own physicality and being able to move around with more assurance. The problem was though, despite the sessions of racing around the plains and climbing up trees her stamina reservations were not getting much better - not at the speed Morpheus was expecting. He wasn't disappointed; he knew Luna trained at a different rate than he himself had as a kit. Times were different and this weather was certainly not helping her. Either of them. Unlike Luna who had short and light fur Morpheus was not fairing any better than his daughter was. His thick dark fur soaked up the sun and made it unbearably hot; so much so that he was dragging himself behind her as they raced - the warmth of the sun did little to allow the breeze of their run to cool them down at all so when Luna finally stopped and collapsed to the ground panting he found himself stumbling over his own paws.
He groaned as he came to a stop a few paw steps from her and panted glaring up at the sun with squinting eyes. He was in a bit of a foul mood with how icky he felt so her rambling and complaints was like gas to a fire as he shot her a sharp look; the flicking of his tail behind his showing his irritation. But he did not raise his voice or shout; he never did even when his body language was clear in his aggressive mood.
"That's enough." he flopped onto his side beside her and scanned their surroundings. "I know it's hot; complaining will not help your situation, Luna." he stated grumpily as his tail thumped a few times.
"But yes, I'd be a cruel tyrant if I denied you that much." he snorted even if it was denying himself as well. "Only if you can scent out your water source yourself." he challenged only half serious about that; if he left it up to her they would not get water quick enough for either of their tastes.
"Surviving in this weather makes it hard but it's important to train all sort of senses in every season. But yes....water would be great...and shade...maybe a swim." he added before cutting himself short realizing he himself was starting to sound like Luna.
Upon realizing this he shot his daughter a squinting look. "I spend too much time with you. I'm starting to sound like you now." he said - partly joking partly serious as he lumbered his way to his feet.
"Come on now, up up up. Let's find somewhere to take a break at before we melt into puddles in our fur." he added not wanting to sit out here any longer than needed despite the soreness of his muscles and the ache in his lungs.
He led the way though on tired and aching paws; feeling the rough hot dirt on his pads and thinking he needed to go play in some mud right now too to help cool off only half sure it would help. Anything right now was better than nothing. It wasn't long until he'd found a small stream in a shade of a large tree and he was grateful when he finally waded into the cool water. Lowering his head to lap up at it greedily while his paws cooled off. After he had his fill he raised his wet face with water dripping down his whiskers to look at his smaller companion.
"So, you want to tell me what's holding you back? You seemed to eager to keep going with your battle training but with stamina you seem like you have a blockage there that's keeping you from doing your best." he frowned at her. Not that he was mad; just wondering how he could help. Was it physically something she couldn't keep up with? Or was it something more mental that distracted her from using her full potential? What kind of tricks should he be pulling out of his fur to help - those were the questions he was wanting to ask but Luna was different than himself when it came to training so he had to be different too to think like her and try to help.
"It's not that big of a deal - if you need a break. I'm not trying to form you into a perfectionist Luna, you are still young and sometime things come a little harder then others so if you need to change routines for a change then tell me." he added template by Magpie of Adoxography

Fire 6, 2021 | Galaria Luna’s green eyes flared up with a fiery competitiveness at Morpheus’s challenge. Though she knew he was joking, she wanted to prove she could find a water a water source. Just to show that she could be helpful and self-sufficient if she needed to be! Even if her whole body felt blobbish like a dying fish in dry land, she pushed herself to her paws. And winced at the new pressure on her sore limbs. Geez, she wasn’t aware that tired from exercise. As she stood, her legs shook the slightest bit. If a cat leaped out of the bushes and pinned her down, she would keel over like a flower in the wind. Despite this apparent issue, she kept a leveled gaze with Morpheus. “Hoho, in no time, I’m going to find us a water source. Don’t you worry!” She started off by sniffing the air, and then paused when she realized she wasn’t sure how water was supposed to smell. Usually they had this distinctively moist soil smell mixed in with the stench of oily fish. But here in the marsh, the typical river-scent was everywhere. How was she supposed to distinguish regular marsh from the shallow pools of water they sometimes encountered? She was about to start heading in one direction in the hopes of stumbling upon a water source, until she saw Morpheus leading her instead. Her shoulders drooped slightly as she walked behind him—she wanted to find a pool herself. She swallowed her disappointment. “Hey! You keep saying that you’re going to teach how to swim, but when are you going to? I almost drowned, that one time I jumped in the river. I mean, thankfully there was a nice cat who saved me, but I would like to learn how to swim eventually!”“Water! Finally!” Soon, they stopped by a stream underneath a large tree. She gazed up at the evergreen, with its bushy clumps of scale-like needles. It stood above Morpheus and Luna, foreboding, as if it were watching them with dark eyes. Which was odd, considering Luna had the strangest sense that someone was indeed watching them from the shadows. She brushed it off as heat-stricken delusions and dumped her head in the water. When she pulled her face out, water droplets snaked down the fur of her cheeks and to her whiskers. "So, you want to tell me what's holding you back? You seemed to eager to keep going with your battle training but with stamina you seem like you have a blockage there that's keeping you from doing your best." Luna frowned back at Morpheus, mimicking his facial expression. “There’s nothing holding me back,” she insisted. “I just have to train more so that I can get more stamina. That’s all!”She puffed out her cheeks, insulted that Morpheus was implying that she couldn’t handle his training sessions. Sure, she struggled a bit with the exercises and she found herself getting tired a lot afterwards, but that didn’t mean she wasn’t willing to endure and persist! Her determination had carried her thus far, and she wasn’t about to change things so that they would be “easier” for her.

Morpheus was tired. Not just because of the heat but mentally tired when it came to playing his role as a father to Luna. She was so full of energy; she just didn't know how to optimize her strengths. As he watched her ramble about the water and swimming he found amusement in her kit-like behavior; to him, she was just a kit. But she was growing up quickly. He often wondered how he'd managed to get this far with her but they were stuck together for as long as Luna wanted to be around him; eventually though she would grow up faster than he could predict and maybe one day want to leave him for adventures of her own. It was his job to make sure she was ready for that day; but would he be ready when she did end up leaving his side?
He blinked and refocused on the conversation; a small smile tipping on his maw as he got a little more comfortable in the shade of the tree overhead; cursing the heat of the day. Well, if she wanted to learn how to swim maybe today would be a good day to teach her; give her a break from the running for awhile and cool off at the same time although he dreaded going into the water - he wasn't overly fond of it due to the heaviness of his pelt that would surely drag him under if he wasn't careful.
"We can learn to swim whenever you are ready; this season is hot and would be perfect for some lessons. It'll keep us cool while under the sun." he mused with a flick of his tail as he swiped at a fly near him; the buzzing was irritating.
But there were more important matters to discuss though; the fact that no matter how much she ran she always seemed to lose her breath quicker. He chalked it up to simply not being used to her own strength yet but was it really that or was there something more to this than what meets the eye? He wasn't trying to push her too far and he often wondered if he rushed her too often. Growing up he only ever did have his sister to train with and she was boundless with her energy; he wished he had gotten her secret on how she kept it up.
"Training for stamina isn't as easy as you think it is Luna. Your body is capable of only so much; you are still young but that gives you time to train. As you grow older you'll begin to realize that your body stores only so much strength; but there is something beyond just bodily strength. You have to tap into the inner part of yourself. The determination, the mental strength, not just your physical endurance." he explained slowly as he watched her laze in the shade with him.
"Perhaps we should take a breather for a few days. Try something else that could help? Maybe try mediation to help control your breathing. You may not realize it but the way you breath while you exhort your energy can help you store some of that stamina for later use when you need it." he added as he mulled over the idea. Did he know anything about meditation? No...not really, but he had a decent idea about it. It was just different when being put into physical use.
"But until then, it's much too hot to keep running today. Maybe if you're up for it we can try again later when the sun goes down. Until then lets go ahead and rest here awhile. You can go play in the water a bit and cool off; get some of that mud off your paws." he added trying to diffuse the situation; he didn't want to upset her by making it seem as if she wasn't doing enough. She was doing great for what she had at her paws right now.
The sounds around him was bothering him though. Something about the faintest of noises was getting him on edge as he scanned the surroundings. He didn't scent anything but the dampness of earth and water around him. He didn't like the prickles he was feeling as if they were being watched. But he didn't want to alarm Luna and instead rose to his paws slowly and stretched his tired muscles.
"I'll be right back, wait around here. I'm going to take a look around a bit." he mumbled as he began padded away from her towards the other tree lines to check the perimeter. He didn't go far, not far enough to lose sight of Luna but he just couldn't get the odd feeling to go away and it was making the hairs on his neck rise up in awareness. template by Magpie of Adoxography
