Shellspots || she/her || 44 moons The two cats stared each other down for an eternity, or perhaps it was mere heartbeats. The whole forest seemed to hold its breath, and Shellspots prepared herself for the worst. Her muscles tensed, anticipating another angry lash from the tom as he finally struck out with his claws rather than wasting time with words.
She would have never, not in one thousand seasons, expected the look of absolute serenity on his face as he refused her. Defied her.
It only made her blood boil hotter.
Rage flared in her eyes as she stared at him, her anger choking her and making it impossible to speak. He thought he was too good for her, was it? Thought he didn’t need her? She had made him what he was, had given him purpose. And the ungrateful piece of foxdung was throwing it all away.
“Very well,” she finally spat. “Just don’t come crawling back to me, begging for forgiveness. You won’t find any here. You’re to leave RiverClan territory and never return, effective immediately. I'll inform the Clan of your departure.” The she-cat went against every instinct she possessed as she turned her back on her now ex-deputy, forcing her fur to lie flat. She would not appear weak in front of him.
She took several paces away, working to regain her composure. Suddenly, a thought occurred to her. She knew a way to wipe that smug smile off of his face. Shellspots glanced back at the ginger tom.
“I never thought you would betray your family like this, but it seems I was wrong. I only hope they can recover. Goodbye, Flare.”
With that, she set off toward camp with her head held high.

It was so freeing, to say 'no' straight to Shellspots' face. It felt like a weight had been lifted from his shoulders. Even his paws felt lighter, like he'd been entangled in thorns and brambles and had finally been set free. At his side was Sugar, as she'd been this entire time, and Flare smiled at her as she spoke his name. "Sugar." he teased, entirely not at the right time but something he couldn't help.
That small moment of mirth was brought to ground at Shellspot's finally reanimated. Flare was probably too happy about being exiled from RiverClan though. No more arguments with Shellspots, no more watching his Clanmates slowly wither under her impossible expectations, no more soothing his siblings over her refusal to make them warriors-
Oh. Wait. No more siblings... Flare felt the consequences of his own actions batter him like rainfall, just as Shellspots swung back to face him and brought them up. He felt his temper ignite and Flare snorted. "Oh no you don't, I'm coming with you. I don't trust you to give them the truth and not turn them against me."
Flare turned to Sugar and gave her a quick nuzzle. "Wait at your den for me, please? I'll come find you when everything is over."

"Me Jealous of you? Oh, Bless your Delusional heart." |
Oh she hated that feline was a passion. How could she be so short sighted and selfish about all of this? Sure, Sugar didn't know much about clans but it was only a form of mortality that one would listen to the concerns of another that was supposed to be a friend right? Regardless of station or position in a group. Respect was respect, period. There was none there. Shellspots only seemed to value her own opinions and if her opinions were not shared like a clone then...then what? Sugar's ears pinned tighter to her head and a low rumble vibrated low in her throat. Shellspots needs to get that stick out from her butt, that's what! She was proud of Flare for standing up to her but would he hold out when his family would be involved? It had been one of the things that was holding Flare back in the beginning. A noble gesture sure; especially as cats who were raised outside of this ridiculous notion of a clan. But Shellspots was stubborn and Flare had fire in him.
This entire thing was ridiculous in her opinion. Why stay where you were miserable? And who where any of them to say whether who was happy or not? Sugar looked towards the others and flashed her fangs at Shellspots as she mentioned his family; well that was a low blow. A low blow that gave wide opportunity for the tabby to twist the truth behind it.
When Flare stood up to go after the infuriating she-cat after her announcement of his banishment she couldn't help but snort at their childishness. Why must things be so difficult?! But Flare then turned to her - she leaned into his affection before his words actually registered and she blinked at him as if he was crazy.
"Go back to my den..." she owlishly glared up at him. "Stay behind and allowed that snake to twist your family? To poison their minds against you with whatever the heck she wants to say?"
she actually laughed in his face as she head bobbed side to side. "I don't think so. I'm coming with you as a witness!" she wouldn't deny that she was also curious to see his family and meet them even under such circumstances. Also, perhaps a bit interested to see what Shellspots was all about when it came to this clan foxdung notion was all about.
So she brushed past him and darted after the silvery figure ahead of them with a determined stride. She wasn't going to let Flare leave that clan without saying his peace and saying a goodbye to his family. She may be an outsider and they may not take her word as truth; but she would always feel that guilt gnawing at her if she didn't at least try. template by Magpie of Adoxography

Shellspots || she/her || 44 moons She had barely taken more than two steps when Flare growled behind her again, and Sugar’s addition wasn’t too far off. Shellspots turned once more to glare at the ginger tom, but was instead met with Sugar’s face much closer to her own than it had been mere moments ago.
“The only thing you’ll be witnessing is justice,” Shellspots spat. “But of course you wouldn’t see it that way. That traitor has obviously filled your pretty little head with his lies already, so it’s no use trying to convince you otherwise.”
Oh, she could waste her breath trying to make the she-cat see sense, perhaps even attempt to poach her loyalty for RiverClan. But she had no interest in trying to sway her when she already had far more loyal warriors waiting for her back at camp.
Shellspots swung her gaze back to Flare, her eyes two small pieces of flint.
“Very well. You may return to camp for a final goodbye to your family, I’ll allow that much. I’m not heartless,” she said acidly, giving each of them a pointed glance. “But after today, if you so much as set foot on RiverClan territory, my warriors will be permitted to drive you out however they see fit.” She paused, letting her meaning sink in.
Then she spun back around and began stalking angrily toward the camp.
“Let's be on our way, then.”

Flare could admit, if only to himself, that actually expecting Sugar to stay back had been a long shot. The sigh he gave out while watching Sugar trot toward Shellspots was perhaps a bit more dreamy than it should have been, considering the situation, but he really couldn't help it. Sugar's attitude was one of his favorite things about her.
Luckily he didn't QUITE forget about Shellspots being there. He didn't jump or startle at her voice, but he did have to snort in bitter confusion because. Did she really think his family would abandon him, just like that? Did Shellspots really think his family would choose her Clan over him? If she did, it said something about her own relationships with her family. Did she think her kits stayed with her out of love? Out of loyalty? It was more likely because they never knew anything different.
He huffed audibly and followed after her. "Oh don't worry about that. We'll be long gone afterward." he drawled. The way she would hear it, he'd be referring to himself and Sugar. The way HE meant it, though? Was himself, Sugar, and his family.

"Me Jealous of you? Oh, Bless your Delusional heart." |
The she-cat slowed her step at Shellspots words from shock of what she had just said. Sugar was livid! How could someone be so judgemental and blindsided to think something like that? Oh no, she wouldn't stand there and let Flare take the verbal abuse - all be damned if she didn't give that righteous feline a piece of her mind!
"Excuse me?" Sugar's voice came out as incredulous as the expression on her face. "A traitor? A traitor?!" she stalked forward with murder in her eyes.
"You dare call him a traitor when you have done nothing to sway me otherwise to believe that he is the only one here telling the truth, you self-righteous, flea-infested, all high and mighty piece of crows food!" oh, she was mad! Seeing red! Hmm, maybe not red....she was seeing far too much green on that tabby she-cat to be anything but the color of jealous envy.
"You prance around here treating people like servants as if you have the right to claim you are better than anybody else simply because you 'are reviving the old clans'. Have you ever thought maybe not everybody is bound to be like you?! That, not everybody has the same viewpoints as you?! No! You don't care as long as you can manhandle everybody into submission - well let me tell you something, lady! That's not how a clan is run or created! Now I may not know a thing about clans but I sure as heck know what it means to be respectful to others and at least hear them out! You jump to conclusions and spew out as many lies as you think Flare has done to me because you don't want to lose respect from people; well let me tell yah! I have a good feeling that your little 'clan mates' aren't sticking around you for your respect - maybe out of fear or lack of courage to stand up to a bully like you!" she heaved in deep breaths to try and calm herself down but her words were laced with venom as she glared murder at the other.
"Flare was doing the best he could and you couldn't give him the decency to hear him out without casting your own judgment without knowing the full story! You have only drained him of his will to do anything good for himself because he's too worried about your needs! You want to preach about respect, being a leader, and loyalty but what have you shown to Flare who's supposed to be your second in command and friend?! huh? Nothing that reflects the lies you tell yourself! If you had a shred of goodness in your body like you claim you could have been a better friend to Flare...but it's clear your not!" she turned her head slightly to look at Flare.
"Flare is a good tom...he has so much more potential than either of you realizes but you are too blinded by your own goals that you can't see that he's not happy...that he could be something greater if he wasn't in your shadow. And that irritates you, doesn't it? Maybe you have seen it...maybe you haven't. But Flare deserves a say in the matter...and so does his family and those you claim are your clan mates. If you don't give them that much...to at least have their voices heard; then your not half the leader you should be." She allowed a small smile to finally pull at her maw.
She hated Shellspots for downgrading Flare as if he had betrayed her - what was so scary and taboo about being friends or...even more with a cat outside of one's so-called clan? Had they, not all come from the same earth? From the same nature - the clans had been gone for a very long time...what shame was there that cats could find companionship with someone who was a loner when all of them were loners to start with. Perhaps there was more to this than she had been led to believe...perhaps Shellspots was coming from a good place and she was hurt for another reason...but coming after Flare as she had and calling him a traitor was uncalled for and Sugar wasn't raised to be mean to other cats regardless of where they came from or where they were going and that was just the moral code of the wild.
"If my mate wants a better life than what you are giving him...as well as anybody else in your clan...then they have the freedom to choose for themselves." She blinked a moment thinking back on her words and felt a flush tug at the skin beneath her fur. "I mean...Flare...And the others." she amended quickly and ducked her head avoiding both feline's eyes quickly.
"Now come on miss self-righteous, let's go tell them the real truth and see what they think." she muttered template by Magpie of Adoxography
