Shirley kept her eyes on the vole. It was nibbling some reeds at the edge of a pond, trying to remember all that she'd been taught about hunting. She was downwind, her weight was evenly distributed, and the vole had no idea she was there!
The closer she stalked, the more her heart thudded against her chest. She needed this catch. THEY needed this catch. More importantly, PATCH needed this catch. He'd caught a cough, and despite all assurances from everybody that he'd be fine, Shirley was still worried.
He needed fresh food, not just the crowfood and rats in Carrionplace. That was why she'd offered to go hunting. But, well, she wasn't much of a hunter. So far she'd missed both a sparrow AND a toad, and she was starting to get desperate.
But there was a different between hunting in a flat solid surface and hunting in mud. Shirley wasn't aware of the stick hidden beneath the sticky stuff until she'd already stepped on it, hard. The crack sounded out, not at all muffled by the mud, and the vole started away. Shirley cursed and lunged for it, but predictably missed.
Her paws skidded through the ick until she fell, scrabbling for a pawhold, into the pond. The water wasn't FREEZING, but it was chilly, and Shirley was already shivering when she pulled herself out. She flopped on the ground, not even bothering to shake herself off, and covered her eyes. Why was she so useless? Patch was sick. Patch needed food. And she couldn't catch one. Measly. Vole!

PhantomStarss Date River 21, 2021| Riley Jinx tensed up as Shirley Ungratefully flopped into the pond. Though she didn't tense up from worry or shock, simply to stop herself from laughing. She needed to be professional after all. At least a little.
She stood up from her spot in the grass, with abit of a huff. "Aww, can the pure breed kitty not catch something for daddy, to hard?"
She smiled a soft smile, a smile so warm it was like soothing warmth of a nest. Her voice was so calming and delicate like a mother soothing a kit. Not like jinx just insulted the she-cat. Sure, if patch caught her doing this she'd be dead. But he wasn't here. And in jinx's mind, it never hurt to knock the spoiled brat down a few pegs.
"What is it? Disappointed? If you couldn't catch the simple frog did you really think you could catch the speedy vole?"
Jinx said with the grace she always had, towering over the pitiful thing. She walked around Shirley, laying down and leaning on the right side over her.
"I prefer not to get my paws dirty, though it seems I must since you're dainty little paws can't do the job."
Jinx said, as she started to groom the much younger she-cat, To try a dry her. [/a][/i][/div]

The moment Shirley registered who the voice speaking belonged to, she groaned aloud. Anybody would have been better. She would have even taken RAT over Jinx. He'd at least just be disappointed and maybe scold her. Jinx made everything worse though.
Shirley huffed audibly and turned her head away from the black-pelted she-cat, crossing her paws to lay her head on them. Maybe if she ignored her, Jinx would go away. Alas, such a thing would not happen. Jinx went on, and Shirley's ear twitched involuntarily at the sound.
Jinx circled around her, still cooing her poisonous words, and Shirley turned her head away again, still not saying anything. That didn't stop Jinx from laying down next to her with a dramatic sigh and... grooming Shirley. Shirley tensed up slightly, but soon relaxed with a sigh. "I hate you." she grumbled, only half meaning it.
She pulled away from Jinx then, finally sitting up and starting to groom herself. "What am I doing wrong?" she asked, frustrated enough to ask. She wouldn't have even hesitated to ask Rat or Patch, but somehow, someway, she knew Jinx would turn it into an insult. "I'm staying downwind, my weight is even, and I'm stepping lightly. What else is there?"

PhantomStarss Date River 21, 2021|Riley Jinx stared at the younger she-cat, tongue poking out from the interrupted grooming session.
"What am I doing wrong? I'm staying downwind, my weight is even, and I'm stepping lightly. What else is there?" Shirley asked, a mix of confusion and anger in her voice. She did just tell jinx she hated her, despite the half meaning insult Shirley still tried to spit venom. It wasn't working in the slightest but still, she was at least trying.
Jinx rested her check on her right paw and hummed. It was rather obvious no? Well, didn't seem so to the little ragdoll. She lifted her left paw, claw out, and poked Shirley right on her forehead.
"You're a spoiled brat, that's never had to work for much for one."
Jinx nearly spat, almost losing that calm and sweet voice. She tapped Shirley's forehead twice
"two, you're to up in you're own head. If you're going to hunt stop worrying about daddy and focus."
As soon as it came it was gone, jinx's normal, conniving and professional voice was back. She took her paw off of Shirley's head and gestured to the younger she-cats paws
"And three, you're to used to the solid, straight, and mostly clean two-leg place. Not nature."
Jinx stood up, pointing at Shirley with her tail.
"That's you're problem."

Jinx stood up after Shirley's question, and Shirley had the half panicked thought that she was leaving. WHY that made Shirley panic, she didn't know. If anything she should have been relieved at the thought. Jinx had never made it a secret her distaste for her. Maybe she was jealous, maybe she was angry, maybe, maybe, maybe. Shirley could think of a million reasons why Jinx hated her, but she'd never ask. It might give the impression she cared.
But no, she wasn't going anywhere. If anything Jinx had just stood up to make it easier to poke Shirley in the head with a single claw. "You're a spoiled brat that's never had to work for much for one." Ice grew in Shirley's veins as Jinx spat it out, at the same time heat grew in her chest. Was that why Jinx seemed to hate her? Because she thought she was spoiled? Jinx wasn't done though, adding another tap to the same spot with the same claw. "Two, you're too up in your own head. If you're going to hung stop worrying about daddy and focus."
Huh. That actually sounded like good advice. It was true, after all. Right before the pounce, Shirley HAD been thinking of Patch. Maybe that had thrown her off. Jinx backed away and gestured toward Shirley's paws, which were caked in mud everywhere. "And three, you're too used to the solid, straight, and mostly clean twolegplace. Not nature." And, once again, Jinx was right. Shirley was starting to hate it.
Shirley thought, flicking some mud off of her paws and watching it fly through the air idly. "Careful Jinx. It's starting to sound like you actually care." she mused with a smirk. Shirley sighed heavily and frowned at the dark pelted she-cat. "So what you're saying is, get out of my head and the rest will come with time?" 'Time that Patch might not have?'
The thought had her visibly flinch, but she tried desperately to hide it from Jinx. She forced a huff and slapped a paw down on the mud puddle, splashing herself even more with the muck but not caring for it. "Things were so much easier in twolegplace. All I had to do was look pretty, be distracting, so you guys could steal fresh food from the twolegs. That was it. Now there's so much to consider when hunting."

PhantomStarss Date River 21, 2021|@ Jinx ignored Shirley's sassy comment, Even if she huffed and rolled her eyes abit. And listen to Shirley babble on about her insecurities. She didn't fully listen, everything the young she-cat said was rather obvious. She scanned Shirley. Fluffy yet delicate kittypet frame wasn't built for the wild.
Jinx sighed "Pretty much." she answered the question. Jinx walked towards Shirley, rubbing up against her side.
"You gotta understand something doll face" She spun around Shirley, rubbing against her other side. Circling her like a predator.
"It's a hard truth, I know. Especially for you" Jinx stopped dead in front of Shirley, holding her chin in one of her paws. Noses almost touching.
"Daddy's going to die" Jinx sweetly, almost in a whisper. And once again jinx spun around, strutting off.
"It's rather obvious, sick old tom, who's not used to the wild? A recipe for death! Heh." Jinx giggled lightly.
"Don't worry though, dolly. I'm sure as long as take care of the group, daddy will be proud." Jinx looked over her shoulder (?) With a smirk.
"If you must over analyze something, maybe worrying about feeding the group. Not patch."
With that, jinx walked off.
