Her nose buried in a flower to scent it's fresh fragrance. The scent reminded her that New-Leaf was here and that meant less stress on her shoulders. It had been a tough Leaf-Bare and she'd definitely thanked her lucky stars that she had her mother's thick coat to stave off most of the coldness. Still, watching the cold unforgiving lands come alive again with the promise of better hunting and plant life dot the lands with its colors and fragrances lifted her spirits as the moons passed. Taking a walk early in the morning with a faint chill of the last bit of the cold seeping into her paw pads soon defrosted the longer she stayed out and away from her little densite she'd created for herself. Goon and Tinder both had gone from her presence a few days prior in search for a better home; ever still the good big step brothers who planned everything out. It would be good to be able to find a home of their own to finally settle themselves down in; tired of wondering the lands after so long. Sugar laughed to herself as she paused to think of how reluctant her siblings had been when she'd declared that she wasn't going with them this time and that instead she would stay in their temporary home. But, she was not a youngster anymore; not in her eyes at least. She had grown well in the last few moons that declared in obvious ways her growth not only physically but mentally that she was, in fact, very capable of being left alone for a few days.
Now, as the sun dipped slowly in the sky casting it's presence behind tall beech trees Sugar found herself pausing at one of those trees and looking up into it's branches as the sun filtered through shifting leaves in the breeze. She smiled thoughtfully to herself before sinking her claws into the bark - hoisting her slight frame up it's trunk with relative ease. She was not the best climber but she was adventurous and as stubborn as she ever was. Climbing up to the lowest branch she rested herself along it's length - mindlessly telling herself not to look down. She was only up here to enjoy the view for a few minutes before she'd have to find her way back home.
But then she heard it; the chittering to her side and she looked without thought only to find a squirrel clinging to the bark of the tree - frozen in surprise at seeing the feline as much as she was surprised to see the rodent. And then it was a chase. The rust colored tail flared as the squirrel turned and swiftly darted back down the trunk with Sugar right behind it a little slower and clumsier as she didn't want to fall to her death as she clambered down. As soon as her paws landed on the earth though she launched after it without a care in the world. But as she raced across the clearing she wasn't looking where she was going and as she leapt over a small stump where she'd seen the squirrel leap over moments before instead of landing on the small rodent she tackled something larger with fur the color of fire in comparison to the rusty brown of the squirrel and much...much larger.
She yelped scrambling to untangle paws and limbs from the larger creature until a familiar scent hit her brain and she froze staring at the other with big baby blues. Her head cocked to the side and she linked. "Don't I know you?" she asked not even caring the position the pair found them in. "I do know you...don't I." she spoke more to herself as she leaned closer getting into the other's space as she studied the tom's features before her dark face lit up with recognition.
"I do know you!" her face beamed with excitement and wonder. "Flare!" template by Magpie of Adoxography

Normally stalking through the forest he'd grown up in settled him after an argument. He never used to get into arguments. Frankly he hadn't even realized he'd had a coping mechanism until recently. Mostly because, again, he hadn't HAD arguments. Lately though it seemed like arguments were all he had, at least with one specific cat. Things with Shellspots had slowly but noticeably deteriorated until Flare found himself dreading seeing her.
There were days he wondered if joining the Clan had been worth it, but then he'd see his siblings. Melodypaw had thrived once she got out of her brothers' shadows, and the extra competition in the other apprentices had pushed Galepaw and Spiderpaw harder than he'd ever thought, pushed them further than he'd ever dreamed of. So however disgruntled Flare might get, he'd just look at them and he knew he'd push through anything for them.
That didn't make right now any easier though. Shellspots was just- being so difficult! About everything but this particular thing was the problem at the moment! The oldest apprentices were getting far too old to still be apprentices. They were almost Flare's size, for stars' sakes! Flare knew she was waiting for the sign for her to be leader before doing it but if it was such a big deal she wouldn't have made her kits apprentices in the first place. Now it just felt like she was being ornery on purpose-
Flare was, quite literally, ripped from his thought process by being completely obliterated by something. A distinctly cat-shaped body, to be precise! Whoever it was yelped, and that was the only reason Flare wasn't using his claws to force them away. He must have surprised them as much as they'd surprised him. That didn't stop him from being annoyed though as the she-cat hovering above him froze and stared down at her.
Her talk of knowing him made Flare pause and look up. There was certainly something about those eyes that was familiar... The memory of those blue eyes hit him at the same time as recognition lit them, and Flare's irritation melted away at her exclamation. "I am. And you're Sugar. We really MUST stop meeting like this." he drawled, wiggling just slightly. Not enough to throw her off, but enough to draw attention to the fact that she was still somewhat pinning him. Again.

She hadn't expected to meet up with old fellow felines she'd met moons before. Truly, she had been so busy with training and living with her brothers that she'd almost forgotten about the flame colored tom she'd met when she was just a youngling but seeing the familiar eyes staring up at her made her heart flutter in excitement as she remembered the good times that he'd taken the time to help train her. Because of him she made her mind up to do better at her life and prove to her family she was not a prissy kittypet who needed supervision all the time. Her beaming gaze stared down at Flare with excitement as much as it was with warmth of finding the familiar tom once more.
When he finally met her gaze she could see the recognition flash in his eyes for the briefest of moments as he too seemed to remember the fluffy molly. When he wiggled beneath her she flushed beneath her fur and scrambled off of him to sit a few tail lengths away. Her blue eyes fell to her paws a bit embarrassed.
"I'm sorry about that Flare!" she laughed sheepishly as she plucked at a few strands of tail fluffs that had dirt and leaves tangled in it's stands of her tail.
"I almost hadn't even recognized you! I thought you were a fox there for a second." she let out a little giggle before her blue gaze lifted back to the tom with a slight smile. "You...you look good. I forgot how big you were." her whiskers twitched.
God, had she reversed back into that socially awkward youngling again. How long had it been since she'd last seen Flare? Too long that she didn't know if he'd be the same grouchy proud tom she'd met when they were younger.
"I can't believe you're still hanging around these woods. I-I mean I'm glad you are because it's good to see you it's just...wow." she laughed again with a little shrug. "I'd honestly thought perhaps you'd find some adventure to chase you away from this place." she added before looking around the area trying to find something else to say.
What did two old acquaintances say to each other after not seeing each other in several moons? Heck if she knew. Her company had been mostly her brothers. Glancing up at the tom she gave him a small smile and a shrug.
"So, a-are you still here with your family or...have you found someone and got a family of your own now or something? What have you been up to?" she asked

It was nice to see Sugar hadn't changed too much, as evidenced by the accidental kick to the gut. Flare grunted quietly at the blow, but that was all the reaction he gave. It was an accident, and he had no intention of making Sugar feel bad for it. And she WOULD feel bad. He wouldn't put it past her to feel bad about killing the prey she eats to survive.
And besides that, it amused him greatly to watch her carefully comb through her tail for bits and debris, looking for all the world like her life depended on it. Flare huffed in amusement at her and wiggled again, this time for the sheer joy of rolling on the ground and feeling the blades of grass tangle with his fur. "Don't worry about it, darlin'. Not the first time I've been tackled by a pretty she-cat, won't be the last!"
He smirked at her saying she'd gotten how big he was, just a little, and rolled to his belly to sit upright as tall as he could. "I'll admit, of all the words used to describe me, I've rarely heard myself described as 'big'. Maybe it's not that I'm big, but you're small?" Flare used his paw to measure, exaggerating the distance by bringing his paw down from her nose to his chest. "Yep, just as I thought! You're just itty bitty."
Flare snickered and backed away a step or two, almost silently daring her to tackle him again, but softened when she said it was good to see him. "Yeah. Same. Good to see you too." It had been moons since he'd seen her. Frankly he couldn't remember the last time he thought about her, and some part of him felt bad about that. Maybe he could bring her back to RiverClan and-
He froze. Froze and looked at Sugar and tried to imagine her meeting Shellspots. Perfectionist Shellspots who only accepted the best and picked and nagged about anything she saw as an imperfection. Tried to imagine how shy awkward Sugar would take it. And Flare felt himself going from soft to dark, and looked away from Sugar to scowl at the ground. "It's. Complicated." His tail lashed on the ground behind him, stirring up the same bits of grass that had just given him so much comfort. "Have you heard about the Clan living by the river?"

Despite her embarrassment Sugar wanted to laugh at his antics. He was surely still the cocky sure-self tom she remembered. But there was something different about him too. Maturity perhaps? Or a bit more of a carefree sense about him? He seemed a lot more playful then she remembered him; he'd been so cocky and even slightly stuck up last time she remembered him; grumpy pants as he was. Even judgmental but as she watched from the corner of her eyes as she fixed her fur on her tail the way he rolled around in the grass reminded her that despite time Flare was still a wild feline just like herself and that time did change a lot of things.
the pet name that slipped from him made her pause and look up in surprise as much as the words he said as she registered them. Darling? Other pretty she-cats?! She blinked her big blue eyes at him blankly a moment as she considered his words before she was quickly shaking her head and huffing. He certainly grew into himself both in his ego as much as his frame it seemed. She sniffed a bit indigent at the comment and tried not to let the idea of him tackling other females bother her. It was not as if they were close friends or anything. Simply two cats who had once long ago bumped into each other and spent a few hours together - that was all.
At his comment of their size her head snapped around to shoot him a glare and she reached out to swat at his offending paw that was used to measure her height to him. "I am not small!" she protested only half insulted. "If anything that just means I'm fun sized and I can still kick your tail end mister! Smaller the size the quicker we are unlike you big baffoon." she grumbled and pouted refraining herself from reaching out and smacking the smug look off his face.
But even in her petulant anger she could see the shift of his facial features as a thought occurred to him and suddenly he came from being a jesting tom to something angrier and for a moment the Siamese molly wondered if she had upset him with her own anger and words. She opened her maw to stay something in hopes to ease his mind. Perhaps apologize to him even when she didn't know what she was supposed to say sorry for or offer some sort of comfort but instead the ginger tom beat her to it by asking about any news of a clan.
She had heard snippets here and there from her brothers when they'd go out near the river to hunt. Scenting on other felines in the area that seemed to congregate in one particular area. At first her brothers had thought perhaps it was just a family living near the river but there were too many scents there that didn't match to a few that did and they were all still fresh. She blinked a moment feeling herself grow somber as she nodded a few times.
"Yeah, but I haven't heard a lot. Just what new intel Goon and Tinder brought back to me. They used to hunt at the far end of the river for us and had scented other cats there. I hadn't heard anything about them in awhile though. My brother have left me for awhile to scout for our new home." she whiskers twitched a bit as her gaze lowered to her paws.
"It's been a concern for us about the growing number of cats around these parts so my brothers wanted to find a safer place for us to live so they went out for a few days to go scout leaving me here alone while they do." she shrugged her shoulders a bit. "Is this clan dangerous?" her eyes widened slightly as she looked at Flare.
Was she in danger of an uprising of a group of cats wanting the forest to themselves? She wouldn't be able to fend off her little nook of the forest and would have to flee without a way to get word to her siblings that she had left unless she went in search for them which she had no single idea of where to start to look.
Cocking her head to the side she studied the other with a concerned expression. "Are we safe from them? You haven't run into them before have you?" her eyes widened. template by Magpie of Adoxography

Flare hated himself, just a little, for dimming Sugar's spirit. But it was an important question, even if it had turned the mood somber. He let her air her worries, figuring he'd let her get it all out before explaining, before his own eyes widened in surprise at her question. "No no, it's not dangerous! I promise!" he visibly hesitated, twitching an ear uneasily, before looking at his paws and continuing in a lower voice. Like he was making a guilty confession. "WE aren't dangerous."
He raised his head a little, just enough to glance at her, before returning his gaze to the ground. "A few moons ago, a she-cat named Shellspots approached me. She said she was forming a Clan by the river and wanted me to join. After talking with my family, we agreed. And somehow, someway, I became the sort of deputy of RiverClan. The second in command, just below Shellspots. And it started out good!"
Flare snorted and stood, pacing back and forth in the little clearing the two had found. He still wasn't looking at Sugar, glaring at the ground. "Shellspots and I had some different opinions, sure, but we got along well enough. I took over the training of the apprentices, my siblings and her kits, so she could focus on recruiting and cleaning up the camp. Lately though, it seems like all we do is fight. Little things, small things, things that should be inconsequential but in the moment seem like the most important things in the world.
"But the thing is? As much as it bothers me now, I can't regret joining." He snorted and shook his head, stopping where he stood to claw at the ground. "My siblings have all grown so much. Not just physically, but also as cats. They've learned so much, and they seem happier in RiverClan so I can't say 'I wish we'd never joined' without also wishing they'd never met their friends and-"
He was rambling. Flare cut himself off with a groan and sat heavily on the ground. "I'm sorry, none of that answers your original question... Which I may or may not have lost the point of. What was the question?" He smiled crookedly, hoping it didn't look as painful as he felt it was.

OOC: Dialogue! | TAGS: Riley |
Sugar had not expected her snarky mood to change the waves of conversation. She hadn't meant to air out her concerns so openly if she had known it would make her friend's mood sour as it had. At first, she was relieved when she heard the clan by the river was not dangerous; at least that was a good thing - that meant Flare had spoken to them or at least seen them from afar and how they lived right? Her internal debate stilled as his voice hushed and he wouldn't look at her as he mumbled a key word that spun the entire thing back around. We. We aren't dangerous. Flare was part of the clan group by the river?! The molly wanted to say something about that - perhaps ask some more questions but Flare was not done and the more words that fell from his maw the more agitated he had become.
But she allowed him to spill it to her. She tucked her legs under herself and made herself into a nice little fluff loaf on the ground with her tail wrapped around herself as if a kit listening to a story as she watched him with big blue eyes. She did not say anything as he spoke but instead took in his words to digest. She felt back the infliction he seemed to be feeling about his position and how feelings on the situation he was in. It was hard thinking one did not fit in a group of cats but unable to leave because of family ties.
With a soft sigh Sugar tilted her head at him and gave him a small smile. "Believe it or not it's okay to have different opinions on things, Flare. I can imagine it's frustrating if you are partnering with another who doesn't see eye to eye but there can be validation in looking at it from a different point of view; perhaps it's not always fun or you don't agree but at least the effort is what counts." she said softly
"When my stepfather was still around he'd take me to this one particular highest peak he could in the area and tell me to look out at the vastness; he'd ask me. 'Sugar, when you look all around you; what do your eyes see?' as a naive little girl i'd list off everything that I saw. From the color of the sky to whether it had clouds or not, to the different foliage that I saw or a particular little animal I'd come across. He did this every few days and I'd give him the same answer over and over again...until the answers changed because I realized the forest around us was changing. The weather changed, the colors changed, the animals I once saw changed - I never understood back then what all of it was about. All the questions and stuff. But as I grew older I would often think back to those days and I realized why he did it. The lesson he was trying to teach me." she explained softly looking up at Flare's agitated movements and facial expressions.
She gave him an understanding smile and shrugged as she blinked at him. "The lesson was that no matter what happens things change. And just like the seasons people change and they grow; nothing is set in stone and just like the birds in the sky or the little rodents on the ground we must follow our instincts - time will not stand still for us to learn a lesson and as people change so does the view of the world we live in. What I'm trying to say in all of this is despite your troubles with your friend and the situation you find yourself in there is no judgement or shame if you choose to take a different path. Things in this world are fleeting but it's the happiness and memories that we create that will linger as long as our minds are fit. If you're not happy where you are Flare you have to find the strength to make the decision on what you have to do about it because in the end you're the only one who can!"
she shook her head thoughtfully and heaved a sigh. "But you know, I've always been that whimsically naive little girl even now who wants nothing more than to live a world looking through a haze." she shrugged with a slightly snort but she still looked up at him with an encouraging smile.
"Don't worry about stressing yourself out. You'll only drive yourself bonkers and then where would you be?" she rolled her eyes playfully hoping to get him back into his usual playful mood. "My question? Huh, I've already forgotten. You know me! I'm an airhead." she laughed as if she hadn't just spent the last bit of the minute pouring out some Shakespeare quotes.

Sugar took a bit to answer after his ramble, and Flare was thankful for it. It meant she was truly thinking it over and not saying what she thought he wanted to hear. Which was a good thing because Flare himself wasn't sure what he wanted to hear. Should he accept everything Shellspots said because she was leader? Should he continue this seemingly never ending argument with her? Should he, dare he, leave? He wasn't sure.
Finally she spoke, and her voice was so soft and gentle and understanding that Flare felt himself relax, even before she was finished talking. She spoke of her step-father, a cat he never met and doubted he'd ever meet, since this was the first time she'd mentioned him, taking her high up, asking her questions. Questions whose answers changed, and the lesson was that EVERYTHING changed. He wasn't the same cat who'd joined RiverClan all those moons ago, and whatever he decided, it would be right for him.
Finally she seemed to finish, and Flare stared down at her. She was still laying on the ground, paws curled under her like she hadn't just dropped a wealth of wisdom on him. And Flare huffed, falling against her and half smothering her with his fluff. "Stop it. Go back to being adorable. I don't like this all grown up mature thing you're doing." He was, of course, kidding. And he hoped she knew he was kidding but he'd apologize if she thought he wasn't. He leaned even more of his weight on her, wondering what she'd do if he tried to squash her.

"Me Jealous of you? Oh, Bless your Delusional heart." |
Her big eyes blinked up at him as he stared down at her and a part of her wondered if all she had just said just went in one ear and out the other. That's usually what happened when she tried to be serious with her brothers. They never did want to take her serious because she was younger then them; thinking perhaps that because she was younger she shouldn't know all of the things a grown cat should but what most people didn't realize about Sugar is that despite often being an air head and too optimistic for her own good sometimes - she had a keen heart and even if it took her awhile she'd learn regardless of who wanted to stop her.
So she was relieved despite Flare's dismissal of her wise words that he didn't seem to reject her advice. She let out a hefty 'oomph' when his weight flopped into her side and her face was suddenly filled with bright ginger fluff. She spluttered out the fur from her mouth and puffed at it trying to get it from her face but as Flare obviously didn't seem too keen to move she shot him a playful glare and wiggled a paw free that she then placed on his head to shove it down enough that the fluff wasn't full on in her face.
She began to run her tongue along the fluff of his head trying to tame the mass; the only sound being at that moment the rough rasp of her tongue along his fur and the forest noises around them. It was nice and peaceful for the moment - a thing she wanted to keep if only for a selfish reason. Sugar was not at all seemingly bothered at the extra weight against her side. He was bigger than her for sure but she was so used to Tinder and Goon wrestling and dog piling her that Flare's weight did little to perturb the she-cat as she continued to groom the larger feline; her body vibrating with a content purr.
"Of course I'm adorable. That'll never stop." she replied with a cheeky little grin between licks. "I swear you boys are all the same when it comes to visage. I'm adorable but I'm also rather smart; I can be both." she pretended to be haughty as she tilted her chin up proudly with a slight pout. She was of course, not at all offended and flashed him a little grin before shoving his head down into the grass and scrambled from beneath his weight
"Life is too short to be thinking of such agitating things Flare! Come on, let's go do something fun and get your mind off of Shellspots! She sounds like she's got burrs in her fur or something but I'm not her so come on!" she waved her tail excitedly and spread her front paws out in front of her into a languid stretch.
"You sound like you've been so busy with this whole clan stuff and training the...err apprentices you called them. It's high time you think about yourself for once! So let's go do something fun! Nothing by the river though...I don't think I'm ready to drown." she giggled.
"What did you used to like to do before joining Shellspots?" she asked eagerly with blue eyes bright.

Flare was expecting her to try and struggle away, the way a fish would flail about when pulled from the river. And while she did manage to get a paw free, he wasn't expecting his head to be lowered forcefully, and therefore didn't fight the initial grooming. And as the grooming went on, Flare relaxed. A rumble of a purr started in his throat, and Flare surrendered to Sugar's ministrations.
When was the last time somebody had groomed him? He tried to remember. When was the last time he stopped, slowed down, let somebody else take care of him? It was always Flare on the go, moving to complete one task or another. Even sharing in the Clan's evening meal, he was always either testing the apprentices or reporting to Shellspots or helping to fix the camp up even more. When was the last time Flare had just. Let himself be?
He only half heard Sugar when she spoke, agreeing with him she was adorable. Well, good to know she knew it! If she had tried to deny it, whether in genuine disbelief or an attempt to fish for compliments, he would have delivered. Something something visage, something something smart-
And then Sugar was pushing him off, using that same paw she'd used to pull him down. Flare yelped slightly, flailing his paws about as Sugar darted away. He blinked up at her, wits finally about him, as she continued. He did huff a laugh when she said Shellspots had burrs in her fur. Honestly considering the state the camp was STILL in, she wouldn't have been far from the truth.
He slowly corrected himself, thinking over her words and her question. What did he like to do before? What did he ever do for fun? It was a simple question. It shouldn't require much thought. But the more thought he gave it, the more unsure he became. More of his life had revolved around his family. He'd played with his mother as a kit, in the way all kits played.
Then it was training with his father to survive. Then it was helping Suzie, up until her death. Then it was his siblings, helping his parents by watching the kits and then helping them train them. It was like he'd never taken the time to be just. Flare. "Um." he mewed, intoned really. "Uh. I, uh." He must sound like an idiot. What mousebrain didn't know what they did for fun?

Growing up Sugar had never thought about being lonely. She has always had her family with her whether at the time she got along with them or not. Being an only child for the longest time she had always enjoyed it when she was with Tinder and Goon when they had come into her life after her own siblings had been given to a new home after they were 6 weeks old back at their two legs place before their world changed. So she could understand Flare in the regard of filling suddenly overwhelmed with not knowing just who he was without his family and his source of duty. She could have pitied him but that would help his case or change anything except maybe insult him by making him feel weaker then he was. There was no shame in his path he took because he did what he thought was right at the time. She couldn't fault him for that but it was still a shame he missed out at growing as a person outside of what Shellspots wanted to mold him too. She didn't particularly sound like a very reasonable person. But Sugar couldn't judge her since she'd never met her.
Shaking her head in mock exasperation the Siamese feline hung her head with a heaved sigh. "You boys are just the same aren't you?" she teased raising her head again before flashing him a smile.
"So bound by duty that you lost who you are." she turned and flicked her tail at him. "Come on, let's find the Flare I met all those moons again!" she offered brightly not at all perturbed by the fact he didn't seem to know what to do.
Sugar grew up in this area and knew it well enough to at least find some sort of amusement. If anything it would help Flare get his mind off of this Shellspots business. He needed to feel like a free tom again and not a deputy or whatever the heck Shellspots appointed him as. Someone so young had such potential for something greater at his own devices. So she swiftly took the lead to push them past through the brush and past the few trees out there in favor of finding a pile of rocks leaning up against an old tree at the edge of the plains.
"Welcome to my humble abode!" she skidded up on top of the rocks and placed her paws on the crooked tree. "Come on! Let me show you something." she offered and began scaling the tree to the lowest branch.
From there she paused to make sure he was following her before continuing branch by branch higher into the tree. It wasn't very big but it had a nice view from the top branch as she rested on it. There was a little hollow in the tree that she crawled into; it was big enough to handle two cats semi-comfortably but with Flare's side it might be a tight fit. Still, she dug around in the hollow where there were leaves, twigs, and moss tufts piled inside. Peering out of the opening with owlish eyes she dug out a bundle of feathers that were tied together with some tall grass blades from the plains and grinned over at Flare.
"I collected these feathers over the moons. Each one plucked from every single bird I managed to catch during my training as a hunter. Birds are the hardest to catch so each that I had managed I'd take a souvenir!" she looked proudly at the bundle with it's colorful tufts of feathers tied together at her paws and batted at it playfully a few times. "Its a daily reminder that I can do anything if I put my mind to it. And it's also a fun toy to play with." she chuckled as she picked it up and crawled from the nook and sat beside the branch beside Flare and rested the bundle at his paws.
"It's a silly little toy but" she gave him a playful look. "It'll help you tap into that playful kittish nature we all had when we were young and innocent. You grew up too fast and forced into a role for the sake of duty. So now, we're reversing that!" she said with a cocked head and much like the mischievous nature of cats; Sugar lifted her paws and whacked the feather bundle off the branches with a cute little grin on her face as she glanced down at it as it fell and bounced off a few of the rocks.
With a little tip of her head she leap down the branches and scaled the tree easily enough to land on the ground and look up at the ginger tom with an expected look. template by Magpie of Adoxography

The only thing stopping Flare from taking that mocking seriously was knowing Sugar didn't mean it that way. She wouldn't. Flare trusted her. It was actually surprising how much he trusted her, considering this was only like their second meeting. It was that trust that made him haul himself to his paws to trot obediently after her.
He didn't even consider where she was leading him until she was climbing a pile of rocks that led up a crooked tree. Flare's eyes widened at the realization Sugar had led him to her nest. Her HOME. Irrationally he worried about her seemingly protective brothers finding a strange tom with their baby sister, but a quick sniff of the air said the only fresh scents were their own.
Curiosity drew him onward, wondering what Sugar wanted to show him. He wasn't surprised that she climbed to the first branch, but then she kept climbing and climbing. And Flare felt his heart warm with every time she glanced back at him. He wasn't sure if it was to check he was okay or if he was still following, but he answered each look back with a smile.
Finally they came upon a hollow, and Sugar crawled into it. Flare stuck his head in, but a quick glance around showed the hollow wasn't very big. It COULD have fit the two of them, but it would have been snug, and Flare didn't want to make Sugar uncomfortable. So he pulled back while Sugar rooted around for something, and he blinked as her blue eyes appeared first, followed by the rest of her.
She held a bundled of feathers in her maw, tied together with what looked like grass, and Flare looked at it then at her in confusion. Luckily she answered before he even had to ask, and her explanation made him look at the bundle with new eyes. That was a lot of feathers if she'd only plucked one from each bird.
Sugar placed the toy at his paws and shot him a playful grin. He wasn't sure how to feel about her trying to force out his inner kit, but he figured it wouldn't hurt to give her game a try! So he kept his eyes on the bundle as she knocked it off of their perch, watching it bounce off and away.
Because he was a gentleman, he let Sugar go down the tree first, waiting until she was on the ground before starting his own downward descent. Only, when he got close to the bottom, he smirked at Sugar and leaped over hear head toward where the feathers had landed.
He grabbed them in his jaw and spun around with a toothy grin, daring Sugar wordlessly to try and take them from him. A classic game of keep away!

To see Flare give himself the chance to relax and play lifted her spirits as much as the hair fluffing up from him jumping over her. His features were so boyish in the way he gave her that smile as if daring her to take back her toy. Of course, she was up for the challenge; it was her idea after all. Grinning back at him brightly she lowered herself to the ground with big blue eyes pinned on her target. She knew she'd never truly be able to take back the bundle of feathers unless Flare allowed it but it was still all for show to fight for it. This was the reason she offered the game of keep away. If only her brothers could see her now they would have been so surprised. Sugar made friends with a lot of people but not many left an impression on her life Flare had. Whether it was fate or not that the pair met each other again was yet to be seen but until all that mumbo jumbo got sorted Sugar was more than happy to play along. Flare hadn't had the chance to act normal or like a kitten in such a long time; all the while he'd had that burden of being the eldest of his siblings and to watch over them along with the position his friend Shellspots had given him gave little to no breathing room. Maybe Sugar was here to change that or to teach him a valuable lesson. So she did what was expected - she leaped for him to snatch the feathery bundle from his maw. Her smaller fluffy body tackled the larger ginger in attempt to grab the fluff; she didn't want to ruin her special little trinket so she did what she thought would be better. Grinning down at him with a gleam of amusement in her gaze instead of grabbing at the feather toy she began batting at his face and fluffing his fur to cover his eyes.
"Gimme the feathers, Flare. Or I'll smother you in your own fur! You big fluffbutt!" she cackled playfully as she attempted to shove as much fur of his as she could into his vision; her tail waving excitedly as she used her back legs to try to pin him down while she continued to smother him.
Then before he could react she shoved her paw into his face under he loosened his hold enough for her to snatch it from his maw. Her nose brushing against his playfully before she was bounding away over him and racing away. Only pausing to turn to make sure he was following. And the game was on! With an answering smile, Sugar dropped into a crouch then pounced toward him. Flare let her tackle him and craned his head away from her with a grunt, keeping the bundle of feathers out of her reach. Therefore he didn't see the smile turn into a mischievous grin, and her paws started batting at his face and using his own fur against him.
His view of her was thwarted. He could still see her, of course, but now it was through tuft of fur. She threatened to smother him with a cackle that Flare couldn't help but laugh, and it was then that the dastardly villain enacted her plan! Sugar swiped the toy before he could tighten his hold again. Then she brushed his nose against his and all he could see what blue blue so much blue. Sugar had the prettiest eyes he'd ever seen, had he mentioned that?
Sugar jumped away from him and raced away, and Flare took a moment to reorient himself to their game so he wouldn't swoon like a moony rabbit. He smirked at Sugar's verbal challenge and got to his paws quickly, accidentally tripping over one of his own paws before he caught himself. Then he was running after her, willing to follow wherever she led him.
Galaria I hate it but take it anyway.

She loved the chase. She loved racing across open plains with the wind fluffing through her fur and the adrenaline that coursed through her knowing without even having to look that Flare was right behind her. She made a show of jumping over rocks and logs and pretending to hide in a clump of grass or a shrub while she waited for Flare to catch up to her before her mischievous little self darted away before he could get close enough to snatch her toy from her. But her lungs were starting to fail her as much as her legs so when she attempted a bigger leap then she had the strength for she overestimated her limit and her back paw caught on part of the log that probably used to be part of a branch before she went tumbling to the round in a flurry of fluff.
There was a mild sting on her paw but otherwise the adrenaline masked her injury and instead of crumbling to the ground in pain as the fall looked awful Sugar began to laugh; her voice gasping in breaths as she laughed in hysteria - not even caring that her toy was a few tail lengths from here where she had dropped it during her tumble to the ground. Her laughter was because she could only imagine how her clumsy self looked going over that log and it burst into another fit of giggles before she finally opened her eyes to see Flare coming up at her.
"That wasn't as epic as I pictured it to be" the feline chortled out before scrambling to her foot; wincing ever so slightly as she lifted her back paw with a slight frown to see a smear of wet redness. It wasn't bad of course; just a bit of a scratch but her paw would seriously be sprained no doubt.
She sighed and looked over at the other with as much demure humility as she could as she lifted her nose to the air pretending to offended. "I suppose this just means you won our little game." her eyes twinkled a bit as she gave him a side glance before dropping her false offense
"And as the loser I must grant you a wish! Those are the rules my brothers and I played by at least." she smiled tilting her head at the ginger tom. "What do you desire, Flare?" she asked looking up at him with the most innocent eyes as she waited for her answer.
She was thankful that despite her maturity in age that she still had the mindset to be childish when it mattered. Most people would have found her games silly but seeing as Flare needed the reminder and distraction she was more then happy to lend a paw even if she ended up taking a clumsy fall in the process for his enjoyment. Sugar didn't have many friends...honestly Flare was probably her only friend she could name off the top of her head besides her brothers so her took her job in the friendship seriously; call it blind optimism or naive innocence but the Saimese feline only want to put a smile on Flare's face because who should ever walk around this world without feeling some sort of joy?
"Oh! Look at that Flare! The sun is setting, have we been out so long already?" her mind suddenly flickered away from him and she looked at the fading sun low in the horizon.
Her bright smile slowly dimmed as she looked back at her friend. "That'll probably mean you'll have to go back home, huh?" she commented a little a little bummed that their fun had to come to a close. She hadn't realized how lonely she actually was without her brothers until she had to say goodbye to Flare.
A part of her fears that if she said goodbye now then she'd never see him again like last time; granted she knew where to find him but that childish fear still lingered in the back of her mind that she'd be left alone again to spend the rest of her night curled up alone. She tried to put a smile back on her face though and stood up with a slight wince she tried to hide behind her smile. "I suppose it can't be helped...I mean...if you'd like you could always find me tomorrow when your duties at your clan is finished...o-or I can find you? Or...Or we can...um..." her brows scrunched as she blabbered on trying to find words. She never was good at proper goodbyes and now knowing if she'd ever see Flare again made her flounder for words like a fish out of water.
"I-I'll see you again...r-right?" Sugar swallowed taking a step forward and looking up at her friend with such open insecurity shining in her eyes that she was almost afraid he'd scoff and brush her off. template by Magpie of Adoxography
