Cockatoo - 17/05/2021 STAR MoonWHAT was he doing here was a mystery to any cat. No one was here, and the large tom was all alone, listening for sounds of prey. His snowy pelt provided camouflaged with the white ground, but he stood out like the sun in the sky when he started to climb a bare tree. As soon as he was perched on a branch, he waited quietly, hoping to the stars that a cat would pass by.

hollow Hollow made her way cautiously across the snowy ground, paws sinking into the snow with each step. A shiver ran down her spine, not only from the snow but also from the unfamiliar part of the forest in which she found herself. The naked branches of bare trees loomed above her, dark silhouettes against a bright sky. One tree in particular stood out among the rest—a large sycamore with swathes of charred bark. Hollow's eyes moved from the base of the tree's wide trunk up towards the crown. Before her gaze reached the top of the tree, however, another shape caught her attention. The shape—which, as far as she could tell was a white cat—perched in the boughs of the burnt tree. Strange, she thought, wondering why a cat of such a color would choose to stay in the tree when their pelt was well-suited to the snowy ground below, They must be fairly confident if they have no reason to hide. The question, then, was whether or not to approach. The decision did not take long for her to come to; if the other cat had not either seen or smelled her already, it was only a matter of time. Her deep brown pelt was particularly conspicuous in these surroundings, and the wind was not blowing in her favor. Might as well be the first to introduce myself, just in case, she thought, and took a few steps closer to the tree. "Hello there!" she called up once she was in range, "Sorry to bother you. Do you live around here?"265 | Lynx hello! I thought these two might get along

Cockatoo - 26/05/2021 STAR Moon
A voice. The tom glanced down, quietly staring at the newcomer. He was silent for a moment before dropping to a lower branch, long, sharp claws gleaming in the little and sparse sunlight as they dug comfortably into the dark-wooded bark of the tree. "Good day. Do I ... live around here?" he spoke quietly, long fluffy tail swishing and swaying gently, forced by some unknown or invisible breeze. "No. I don't think so. It's hard to tell when it's such a cold season. Places seem to look the same, and your mind gets this numb sort of feeling after weeks of travels that it's hard to know if you've gotten to a new place" he seemed to be talking to himself, and when the cat didn't seem like a threat, he bunched his muscles and leaped to the ground, landing gracefully, large muscles rippling as they contracted. "What are you doind here, so close to rat-infested lands in this harsh season of life?" he questioned quietly, once finally directing his speech to the darkened-furred molly that stood before him.

hollow As the tom made his way down from his perch, Hollow began to realize how much larger than her this stranger was. With each drop he seemed to grow in size. Although she knew it was only because of his initial distance that his size hadn't been apparent, she suppressed a shiver of unease; size notwithstanding, the tom didn't seem all that intimidating, let alone aggressive. If anything, he was downright friendly. Maybe too friendly? The thought raced through Hollow's mind, but she dismissed it quickly as paranoia. I have no more reason to suspect him of anything than he has to suspect me, she reasoned with herself in an attempt to will her anxieties away. As the stranger began to talk, Hollow's nerves began to ease more smoothly. He had a soft voice, and although his initial remarks were oddly aloof, as if he were talking to himself, his quiet manner of speech was reassuring—even if the words themselves were somewhat perplexing. He has absolutely no sense of direction, does he? Hollow tried to contain her shock, but she felt her head tilt curiously of its own volition. Still, he seemed to have some idea of where he was, judging by his knowledge of rats nearby. Good to know, she thought, filing that piece of information away for later. "Ah, I've never been to this area before. I didn't want to intrude, but I suppose if you're not familiar with this place either, it's not an issue..." Hollow trailed off as the strange white tom landed before her, finally come all the down from the tree's branches. As she had anticipated, he blended in much more easily on the ground, his long white fur fading into the snow underfoot whenever Hollow let her attention drift. Hearing him finally address a question directly to her, Hollow blinked in surprise. Wherever his focus had been before, it was now on her. "I'm just passing through," she replied, before remembering that he had no claim to the area either, "Exploring. Wandering, I suppose. I'm Hollow, by the way; what is your name?"

Cockatoo - 31/05/2021 The loner paused, listening and taking in the sight before him, crouching to keep in the warmth. She was smaller than the snow-white tom, yet she didn't look aggressive. Scared, possibly. "Well, Hollow. It's a ... pleasure to meet you. No no, you're certainly not intruding. My name? I'd rather no one knows, but you can refer to me as whatever you like" he shot her a quiet look, one filled with pain of the memories his name brought back. "... Not familiar? I do know this place by scent. I could navigate it easily even if I was blind" the tom huffed, fur bunching up, tensing. "You may think exploring is a good idea, and it is. It's a good idea from a stupid cat. It's a tough time. If I were you, I'd stay somewhere safe if you know a place. I'm not willing to share this rat-infested lands with any cat longer than 2 nights. I found this place full of prey, enough to get me through this horrid season. I've found warm, dry, abandoned fox burrows for myself. If you plan on surviving, I suggest you go back to where you came from, or to a place you know is safe and has plenty of resources for yourself" he growled, his voice a low, rumbling kind of tone. A warning, one could guess. It has taken him weeks to find somewhere safe, somewhere useful, and he wasn't planning on sharing until the first spring day came. "Stay for the night. Then leave, Hollow" he told the she-cat, standing up to his full height. Sigh

hollow Hollow cocked her head to the side, taken aback by the tom's refusal to reveal his name. She had met her fair share of strange characters, not the least of all her own brothers, but never before had she been denied a name. What do I call him then... Her mind ventured momentarily to the more formal naming conventions of the legendary forest clans she'd heard whispers of, but she quickly dismissed the idea; coming up with a moniker for a stranger was difficult enough without confining herself to fantastical parameters. A brief glance into the tom's eyes did away with any inclination Hollow might have had to push for a more concrete answer. She would never consider herself particularly insightful when it came to the emotions of other cats, but the sorrow in the white tom's eyes was hard to miss. Her acquaintance's demeanor shifted rather suddenly as she watched, moving from relaxed to tense fast enough to set her own fur on edge. Hollow felt her ears flatten minutely against her head, but she stubbornly forced them back to their upright position, trying to stay calm. Getting riled up wouldn't help either of them. And I've had enough practice with being called stupid for it not to hit as hard, she thought wryly. "Well, you're awfully brave to stay in these rat-infested lands by yourself. Brave or stupid, but I guess that depends on who you're asking." Hollow leveled the tom with a teasing look. She had not had the luxury of a proper argument with her brothers, busy as they had been throwing insults at each other and ignoring her as a result. The full force of another's focus on her was strangely thrilling, but it wouldn't do to be entirely antagonistic; if it came down to a fight, Hollow didn't love her chances of escaping unscathed. As the other cat stood up to his full height, Hollow tilted her face upwards to look him in the eye, doing her best to maintain her composure. "I also can't imagine one cat needing more than one fox burrow, especially if those foxes decide to come back. But I assure you, I won't take up nearly as much space as you do."

The tom let out a huff as he listened silently, eyes narrowing. "Insult me one more time and we'll see how that ends up for you" the snowy white tom hissed, claws unsheathed. "Rat-infested is good. Means there is a lot of food. I don't enjoy company. I live here. I'll let you share if you prove to be of any use" he grunted before sheathing his yellowish, sharp bones and relaxing, heading away. He signalled for the molly to follow, throwing one glance behind his back before he headed off for the burrows and warmth.
The giant lumbered off, using scent to find the way back to his current home and fresh kill. As he stood by the entrance of the tunnel, he huffed "In. Third den on the left. Other two might cave in soon" and with that, he waited until the she-cat went inside and followed, too big for her to squeeze past if she wanted to leave. | TAG SighWORDS 161 NOTES 09/06/2021 |

hollow With the appearance of claws into the mix, Hollow considered her options. The stranger seemed a little...strange, for lack of a better word. She was still half-convinced that he wasn't even talking to her, what with the sparse eye contact and his response to her teasing. She had only repeated his own words back to him, but maybe he hadn't noticed? I might need to work on my jokes, she thought idly, noticing with a hint of relief that the white tom had sheathed his claws. But I should probably save the jokes for another day, anyhow. His words finally caught up to her. She couldn't really imagine what use this cat expected to get out of her, considering he seemed so eager for her to leave. Had it been any less time since Hollow's last interaction with another cat, she might've been tempted to simply leave things as they were and try her luck elsewhere, but...well, it had been a while, and she was a bit desperate for company. Even if that company was potentially dangerous. Not like I'm not used to being in dangerous company, Hollow thought. "I'm not too partial to rats, myself," she meowed, following behind her surly companion. She hoped this statement would land her on steadier ground, although she didn't have high hopes; her previous attempts had had little success, after all. When they reached what Hollow assumed to be the tom's den, she peered inside and inhaled. It didn't smell like death and decay, which was a good sign. Hollow tried not to think about how low her standards were in that regard. Acknowledging the terse instructions given to her, she headed onward with only mild trepidation.
