Personality:
Gentle and patient, Fieldflight, at a first glance, is perhaps the opposite of their former mentor. They’re shy, someone who cares about how others view them, and they’re focused more on the future. They struggle with anxiety and having the courage to believe in themself, but when it comes to encouraging others, they are the loudest voice. And if there is any trait that Fieldflight and Sunchaser share, its their existence as introverts and their devotion to helping other cats.
Despite their shyness, they are very curious and enjoy getting to know other cats and learning from different perspectives. They love philosophical discussions, insightful and retrospective dialogues about experiences, and are most engaged when it comes to a deep conversation. Their open ears and trustworthiness allows others to lean on Fieldflight for support. Though other cats reveal their innermost secrets to Fieldflight, the same can’t always be said for them.
They are an intensely private cat, similar to Sunchaser, and hate attention, much less judgment. Their fluctuating sense of self-worth, struggles with anxiety, and their fear of upsetting others, has been a recurring battle throughout their life, but it’s been a battle they’ve fought alone.
They avoid confrontation where possible and are uncomfortable with vulnerability. They prefer to squash fights and arguments before they happen through conflict resolution, consensus, and finding compromises where possible. Sometimes, for the sake of not inconveniencing others, Fieldflight would rather stay hidden and forgotten. And in their efforts to uphold ideals of compassion, freedom and altruism, they often neglect their own well-being.
History:
A long time ago, Fieldflight was once known as Crevicepaw. It was a period of their life they would rather forget, if not for the fact that their mentor was Sunchaser. Their relationship with their family was tenuous, having to juggle high expectations from their parents to their leaders, and to the competitiveness of their peers. They felt like they could never meet those standards.
And the same could be said of Sunchaser, at first. They were terrified of upsetting Sunchaser when they first met her, but they quickly realized that, underneath her pelt of porcupine quills, was a cat who fiercely believed in others. Sunchaser’s high standards were harsh, sure, but it was because she saw the potential of other cats and was frustrated when they didn’t try to reach them. And at the time, Crevicepaw, already an enthusiastic learner, was eager to learn about the world from Sunchaser’s eyes.
The two often had long dialogues about life, in-between sessions. It was those moments that Crevicepaw treasured the most.
However, they kept their fears regarding the tunnels hidden for a long time. The first time they entered the tunnels was when they realized how suffocating they made them feel, how pertinent was the darkness, and how little room there was to flee. They tried to convince themself to like the tunnels, but things escalated on the fateful day of their final assessment. Sunchaser was certain that Crevicepaw would pass easily, but they experienced a harrowing panic attack in the tunnels.
They desperately admitted to Sunchaser their fear of the tunnels, as well as their desire for a new name. Sunchaser helped them switch to being a Moor Runner apprentice under Amberbird’s mentoring, and to a new name: Fieldpaw. But their relationship with Sunchaser was strained from that point onward,
Fieldpaw admired Amberbird a lot, and learned what it meant to be free. Ironically, from their time on the moors, they began to develop a healthier relationship to the tunnels, learning how they were connected to the world as a whole. They came to understand WindClan, and their role in it, as part of a system, rather than being an isolated part.
From Sunchaser, they learned what it meant to be courageous and unashamed. From Amberbird, they learned about their place in StarClan and in the world, while also caring for themself. They cherished these lessons as integral to their development as a cat, and even saw their two mentors as something like parental figures.
Eventually, they reconnected with Sunchaser, as they expressed concerns over the tensions between the clans. They engaged in passionate conversations about what they felt about their current situation.
Things came to a head at the Final Gathering. Horrified by how the fighting broke out, they hurried with Sunchaser when she urged them to find Amberbird, who had fled the battle scene just moments earlier. When they arrived at the tunnel hideout, Fieldflight realized that a cave-in was about to begin. Though they were still afraid of the tunnels, they hurried in to save Amberbird. Sunchaser trailed behind, despite seasons of precautions against reckless attempts at rescue.
Then, the tunnels collapsed and killed all of them instantly. Fieldflight and Sunchaser were separated from Amberbird. And for seasons, they rarely saw the sun again. Fieldflight cherished the few glimpses of sunlight they could see, for they could only stay in the shadows of the tunnel, lest they risk their form disappearing completely.
When Roots’s family moved by the tunnel, Fieldflight was the one who was eager to meet them. And meet them, they did…
