[googlefont="Courgette"] Survival Catching prey on the moor was challenging to say the least. Rabbits and mice are quick, and very observant as well. Pepper never considered himself to be a bad hunter–he wasn’t the best but he had managed to keep himself fed through the last few moons. The moor was beginning to change his mind. There was just too much open land for the prey to use, and he was too slow to catch up.
Everything had been so much easier when his mother was still around.
She was a real hunter, able to keep herself and a helpless kit alive through all of the harsh leafbare moons. She had been the one teaching him how to survive the forest. Pepper just hoped that she was still surviving out there, somewhere.
The gorse was a very welcome sight. Now that the blossoms had grown in, the air smelled strongly of coconut. This could hide his scent! Not only that, the bright yellow flowers would do a much better job of hiding his blazing pelt than the rest of the moors could. Carefully, Pepper made his way into the gorse, creeping all the way. He was keeping his eyes, ears, and nose alert, waiting for the first unfortunate creature to come his way.

The scarred tom hovered nervously at the edge of the tree line. Almost a whole moon had passed since Chester had taken Stone under his wing. Now that the young kit was better, Chester's thoughts had turned to finding a safe place for Stone to grow up. While the forest was what Chester was familiar with, he wasn't sure it was the safest place for a kit by any means. Stone could easily get lost amidst the towering trees or fall prey to a predator. Not that predators weren't elsewhere, but.[break][break]
Chester eyed the landscape of the moors suspiciously. He had to make sure that he was raising Stone in the best environment possible. To be sure of that, he had to set out into unexplored lands. The first of which was the moors. He'd avoided the moors in the past due to its open nature. The moors lacked cover. Walking out into its broad expanse felt dangerous with nothing to protect him from preying eyes. In the past, he wouldn't have batted an eye at having to fight, but things were different now. If something happened to him, Stone would be left all alone. He couldn't do that to the kit.[break][break]
Cautiously, he took one step out from the safety of the woods then another and another. When nothing happened, his confidence grew and soon enough, he was traversing the moorlands freely. He had three priorities in his scouting mission. First was other cats. They likely lived out here, but he had make sure any territory he might claim wasn't already home to another, and any cats he met had to be non-hostile. They didn't need to be friendly, but they needed to not be his past self, violent and lashing out at everyone that came near him.[break][break]
His second priority was shelter. Predators were inevitable, but they had to have shelter to protect them from the weather. If they had nothing between them and the wind, rain, and snow, they wouldn't last long. A good shelter was a must. Stone didn't need to experience cold nights beneath pelting rain with nothing to protect him. That was a ghost of the past. He wasn't sure what kind of shelter he could find in the moors, but there had to be something.[break][break]
His third priority was prey. There had to be enough food in the area to sustain the two of them. He wanted Stone to never suffer even a day from hunger. As long as there was prey, no matter what it was, Chester was confident they'd be okay given the prickly tom was a strong hunter. He was sure he could catch whatever lived in these lands.[break][break]
Chester kept an eye out for all three criteria as he explored the moors. His trek eventually bringing him to a hollow of gorse. It was the perfect hiding spot for rabbits, theoretically. He had to find some first. Entering the gorse, he eyed the plants for any sign of prey. Just as he'd expected, a few moments later, the twitching ears of a rabbit appeared through the foliage. It would be more than enough for himself and Stone.[break][break]
Crouching, he waited for the right moment. In a burst of dust and fur, he pounced on the unsuspecting rabbit. When the fighting stopped, Chester stood triumphantly over his downed prey, the rabbit in his jaws. As the dust settled, his eyes fell on a young feline crouched in the gorse much to his surprise. "Umn, hello," he mumbled through a mouthful of fur.

[googlefont="Courgette"] Survival Pepper noticed the rabbit too late. By the time he was prepared to pounce, a muscular form leaped out of the gorse and beat him to it. Bundles of fluff went flying as the piece of prey was swiftly killed and held within the jaws of a large, scarred tabby tom. Pepper felt his fur bristle against his will. He always tried to give other cats the benefit of the doubt but it was difficult not to be scared by the intimidating form that had burst out of the bushes. Not to mention the fact that the other tom had just inadvertently taken Pepper’s first potential meal in quite a while…
Pepper forced his pelt to lay flat once more, listening cautiously as the other tom began to speak. “Umn, hello”. Slowly, Pepper rose out of his crouch–taking a few steps back as well. It had been a long time since he had last spoken with another cat, he almost didn’t know how to respond. A simple “Hello,” would have to suffice.
After a moment the young orange tom continued, “Um, my name’s Pepper. What’s yours?” While he had been startled just moments before, Pepper realized that if the older tom had wanted to hurt him–he would have already. Quite easily, in fact. Pepper shuddered to think about what would have become of him if the other tom did have bad intentions.
The way the rabbit’s corpse hung pitifully from the scarred tom’s jaws–grrrrrrlg.
Oh.
The hunger that Pepper had forgotten about up until this point returned with a vengeance. He ducked his head out of embarrassment, mewling a quiet “sorry,” as well. “I uh, haven’t eaten in a while”. It was only after the words had escaped him that Pepper thought they may have been a mistake. While he was naive–he knew it probably wasn’t a great idea to share his weakness so openly with a tom that he knew nothing about.
Oh well. It was too late now to take the words back anyway.

The rabbit answered his questions about prey in the area. Since there was prey to be found, the chance of them going hungry was low. No matter what, Chester always made sure to bring home a kill. As for shelter, while the grouse provided cover for prey, it wouldn't suffice for Stone and himself. The tom doubted the safety or stability of the place in a storm. He'd have to keep looking if he wanted to make this place home. As for his final concern, the answer to that was given to him in the thin, orange kit with the bristled fur.[break][break]
It was clear from the raised fur and the couple steps the young one took away from him that he'd scared the kit. A fact that shamed him. He didn't want to scare them, especially since they looked so young. It was like meeting Stone all over again. Even if he wanted to change, he still had a long way to go.[break][break]
Chester dropped the rabbit, but left a paw possessive paw on the body, and relaxed his posture in an attempt to look less intimidating. He lost his catches to others a lot in his younger moons. As a result, he couldn't shake the habit of guarding his kills. "I'm Chester," he attempted with a friendly tone, but his natural gruffness rang through, and his smile was more of a scowl though.[break][break]
His attention snapped to at the familiar sound: the rumble of a hungry stomach. He'd heard it before all to often, and the sound summoned a protective instinct from Chester. The tom never wanted to hear the rumbling from Stone nor should it be coming from this little one. Studying the kit, they were unnaturally thin. A fact supported by their words. Removing his paw, he nudged the rabbit at Pepper. "Eat," he ordered. He'd wanted to save it for Stone and himself, but there was more than enough to share with a third, especially one so small.

[googlefont="Courgette"] Survival The voice that answered Pepper’s question was much deeper than he had expected. The little tom could tell that the older cat was trying to sound friendly–although he was failing. The tom’s face had lightened up slightly from its original expression, likely only visible to the most observant of cats. “Nice to meet you.” the young tom was still quite tense, but it was clear that he was easing up now that he knew the older’s identity. Pepper doubted the tom would have shared his name if he meant to do him harm.
Unless he was going to ensure Pepper wouldn’t be able to share it.
Although, the next words out of Chester’s mouth made the younger tom doubt that possibility. Who would share prey with a cat they were expecting to kill?
Incredulously, Pepper asked, “A-are you sure?” His polite streak didn’t last long though. He let out a small “Thank you,” before leaning down to the rabbit and scarfing a few bites of it down.
Pepper quickly regained his manners, stopping to raise his head after eating a considerable portion of the creature. “You can have the rest. You did catch it, after all…” he felt guilt for taking any portion of the meal away from Chester, even if the older tom did offer. Pepper should be able to catch his own prey. He was old enough!
“Thank you again, Chester. I really do appreciate it!” the young tom put every ounce of gratitude that he could into the words.
“The rabbits here are just so hard to catch…”

Chester looked at Pepper with a perplexed expression. Who would turn down food when they were so clearly starving? Had it been himself, he would have jumped at the chance before the other could have a chance to rescind their offer. That or he would have attempted to take the rabbit as soon as a chance appeared. "Of course." The words were barely out of his mouth before Pepper was diving into the kill. That was more like it, he thought with a satisfied look.[break][break]
"Don't eat too fast," he cautioned, happy to see the little kit had a healthy appetite. Though it was perhaps too ravenous. Chester watched with some concern seeing how much was left. It seemed he'd underestimated how hungry the young feline was. He'd have to hunt some more in order to feed himself and Stone. His smile was small hearing Pepper say he could have the rest. What a good kid. Pepper was quite the opposite of himself at that age.[break][break]
He nudged the orange kit affectionately, "Happy to." Chester didn't have the heart to allow any kits to go hungry. He'd been in that state. He knew the pain. No kit needed to face the same fate he had. He looked at Pepper with an amused expression. "Shall we try catching another then?" Chester could catch one on his own, but if the little one wanted to learn, it would be a good chance to teach him.

[googlefont="Courgette"] Survival It was nice to have a real meal after not having one for quite a while. Pepper’s orange tail swishes happily as he listens to the older tom. Now that Chester’s been around him for a while, Pepper can tell that the grumpy cat means well. He’s done nothing but help Pepper since arriving. He shoots Chester a grateful, wide smile as he nudges Pepper.
Pepper lights up at Chester’s suggestion. “Really?! You’ll teach me?” The little tom is practically bouncing on his feet in excitement. The last cat to hunt with him was his mother–and that was moons ago. He had tried his best, but he hadn’t had many lessons before his mother disappeared. Maybe he could show her what a good hunter he was when they finally met again! The thought causes his tail to quiver and his claws to flex.
Pepper had little experience hunting with other cats. Alone, all he was able to catch were meager mice. Rabbits were much larger–and definitely harder to catch in Pepper’s opinion. “How should we start, Chester?” he asks, curiously. Here on the moors, he assumed that hunting would be very different than how he had been doing it in the forest. There was little to no cover here–aside from the gorse. Nothing to hide his scent or his fiery pelt. Honestly, the little tom was at a bit of a loss for what to do, deferring completely to Chester’s judgment and guidance.

That was more like it. Pepper's wide smile made him feel like he'd done the right thing for once. It was a strange feeling. Not that long ago, he'd never felt guilt for his actions. It was survival of the fittest. The rule of tooth and claw. It was only right he did as he wished. But now he wasn't so sure. Had anything he'd ever done been the 'right thing' to do?[break][break]
"Of course," he purred, quite happy to see Pepper's enthusiasm. But where to start. Chester was used to hunting alone, and he'd never taught anyone before. He wasn't sure how well he'd able to teach this little one, especially since their sizes were so different. Well, there was nothing to it but to try.[break][break]
"First," he stood tall, "We have to find a new hunting ground. The noise will have scared the rest of the prey away." The tom hadn't been the most graceful with his kill. The ruckus surely must have sent any prey nearby scattering for the hills. He gave Pepper a wry smile, "Fit for a walk?" Chester didn't think they'd need to go to far, but he keep an eye out for any prey on the way.[break][break]

[googlefont="Courgette"] Survival “A new hunting ground?” Pepper listens to the older tom intently, letting out a small sound of understanding as the reason is explained. “Yeah, that makes sense… I can definitely walk!” The prospect of their hunting trip is still causing the young orange tom a great sense of excitement, his amber eyes gleaming. Maybe he’d even be lucky enough to learn more about his new older companion on their journey!
“How do you know a good hunting ground when you see it?” As the unlikely pair begin their walk, Pepper notes the way that Chester walks. The little tom attempts to copy Chester’s self-assured stride. He stumbles around a bit as he does so–shooting a bashful, embarrassed smile to Chester as he recovers–hoping it didn’t make him look too silly.
“Are you on your own, too?” Half a rabbit seemed like it was enough to feed one cat, so Chester agreeing to do more hunting led Pepper to think that the older tom wasn’t only hunting for himself. He thought it best to ask, in case his guess was wrong.
There was a small, selfish part of the young tom that hoped Chester was on his own. Surviving on his own was so lonely, and hard too. He just wanted to feel safe again–like his life wasn’t constantly in danger of reaching a premature end. Traveling with a cat like Chester, who knew how to survive… It would be ideal for the younger tom. There’s a glint of hope in his amber eyes as Pepper waits on Chester’s answer.

As they walked, Chester's eyes flit back to Pepper frequently to check on the kit. At first, he was confused by what he saw. With the strange way Pepper was walking, he thought something was wrong with him. An injury, maybe? But after watching, he realized the orange tom-kit was trying to copy Chester's walk. The embarrassed smile Pepper gave him was met with Chester's own flustered grin. He was honored Pepper would try to mimic him, but it also felt too good for a cat like him.[break][break]
He thought about the question for a second, "If there's a lot of hiding places, there's usually good prey." There wasn't much else he could offer in explanation. No one had taught him, and the tom had mostly learned through instinct, trial and error. What else was a good sign? "If there's water nearby, too." The prey liked to gather where resources were plentiful. Water, especially, seemed important.[break][break]
Chester flushed. He felt bad when Pepper was asked if he was alone. His attention had switched to Pepper once he'd encountered the gaunt tom-kit. Thoughts of Stone had taken an unexpected backseat. "No, I live with another kit," he looked at Pepper, "Likely around your age." It was somewhat hard to tell with how thin Pepper was, but the two were probably similarly aged. Though both looked far too small. He hesitated to call Stone his kit. It still didn't seem right for a cat like him to be taking care of anyone. After everyone he'd hurt, did he really have that right? Maybe, he'd just end up hurting Stone and Pepper as well doing this.[break][break]
