Thunder Moon 15, 2021
The sun's heat bore down on Cocoa as she padded along the sidewalk. She had tried to catch a robin earlier in the day, but she pounced far too soon. It fluttered off before she could even attempt to grab it.
The sun was still low in the sky when that happened. Now the hot sun was high above her, and her belly was starting to gnaw at itself. She was headed towards one of her usual stops: an elderly twoleg who often left snacks out for cats like her.
She hoped there would be a few morsels left for her when she arrived. If not, maybe she could coax the twoleg into bringing her some more. A few loud meows at the right door went a long way. She pressed on, arriving at the base of a wooden pole at the corner of the sidewalk.
Suddenly, she heard big pawsteps far behind her. The unmistakable stench of dog creeped into the air. Cocoa instinctively dived into a nearby bush and froze. The scent grew stronger as the dog approached. It sniffed for a moment at the bush, then plodded on down the road.
The scent faded, and Cocoa stepped back out. It hadn't seen her. Good.
On edge, she looked around cautiously. No dogs in sight. She chanced a glance at the sky- nothing dangerous there, either. But wait- what was that? Her eyes locked onto a strange image above her, affixed to the wooden pole.
She saw an image of a cat. It was a bit faded, but it looked eerily familiar.
A little cat with brown, cream, and white fur was staring down at her. She had seen a cat like that many times before at her old housefolk's nest- in her reflection. The faded cat looked exactly like her own reflection!
Why was this image here? Had a twoleg placed it there? For what purpose? Could this really be an image of her?
Cocoa scratched her ear as she contemplated these uncomfortable questions. She was starting to lose her appetite.
