My shadow's the only one that walks beside me It had been a day- over a day, really- since Last had caught anything to eat. Hunger gnawed at his belly, and he'd just decided that he wasn't getting anywhere this way. Food given freely would keep his strength up while he tried again to hone his skills to an extent where they could support him. Except, while on the way, he'd spotted a mouse. Perhaps a young one, fresh from its own birth-nest, busily gnawing at something it had found, its back to Last as it ate.
The young tom crouched, suddenly quivering all over, and slowly took two steps closer, wishing with all his might for his stomach to hold from growling its hunger for just a bit longer. He was within pouncing range... so close!... and the mouse was still unaware of him. Last tensed himself and then sprang. Possibly alerted, the mouse skittered away just as he did so, but Last's lunge was true and both paws landed on the mouse, and his bite to end its life was done quickly. Relief and pride warmed him, briefly sweeping away everything else, and he bent his head to breathe in the warm scent of his caught prey.
The sound of pawsteps caught his attention, and Last swiveled his head around to see: another tom, a larger cat than he was, with black markings crossing his silvery coat. Immediately assuming the worst, that he was coming to steal his hard-won meal, Last rose to his full height and bristled every hair he could, while pulling his lips back from his teeth and sounding off a hiss of warning. "Keep on going," he snarled, stub tail flicking back and forth frantically, doing its best to lash side to side. "There's nothing here you'll get except my claws in your pelt." Last Loner Shortee

- Silence is my strength -
Stone hardly ever ventured from the protection of the forest oaks since he had first arrived there. But he wanted some space to think. The forest seemed to be more crowded, almost as if he was being suffocated by the treetops. He pondered if the feeling was due to him finding new friends in Clover and Flare. He enjoyed their company, but he still found himself overwhelmed at the idea of having friendships to manage and grow. He normally preferred solitude, yet he couldn't forget the feeling of laughing with Flare or encouraging Clover.
So, Stone found himself in twoleg place: an area he wasn't all that familiar with, but hopefully an area in which everyone was unfamiliar with him. Not knowing anyone made him feel safe, like he was able to simply exist without the interruption of companions. However, just as his luck would have it, the tom was brought out of his thoughts upon the scene of a stocky cat with brown fur and a shortened tail. Stone, being the thoughtful cat he is, fleetingly wondered if the lack of tail affected the stranger's balance. However, his yellow gaze quickly flickered toward the small mouse near the brown tabby and back again to his snarl. The cat asserted that he had to keep going, unless he was in the mood for a fight.
The grey Maine Coon kept his face completely neutral. The only features giving away his emotions being the narrowing of his eyes and the slow lashing of his tail. He wasn't one to lose his temper, but he didn't want to seem weak. With all of the talk he was creating about starting Clans... would a leader back away from a fight, even when given the chance to flee? Stone wasn't sure, so he slowly put himself in a defensive stalk, waiting for an attack. Simultaneously, he wanted to diffuse the tension (at least slightly). His voice laced with ice, he quietly responded, "I don't need your prey. I don't appreciate your threats, either. Did I really appear as a scavenger to you?"

My shadow's the only one that walks beside me Hyper-alert and agitated, Last tensed as he noticed the other tom’s casual walk shift into a stalk, his tail starting to twitch. It only confirmed his suspicion, and his body began to tremble, coiled tight and already only a heartbeat from leaping to initiate a fight to keep what was his. His stomach growled, a complaint fueled by the warm scent of the mouse lying close by, but he couldn’t focus on that right now. If he let down his guard even a little, this cat would have an opening to strike. He had to stay alert.
“Yeah, you do,” Last hissed back, shifting every so often to keep the tom square in his sights. “You and every other flea-bitten sack of bones in this place. I know your kind! You’d steal prey from a cat as easily as you breathe. But not this prey and not from me, you thieving foxdung! This is mine!” He was barely holding himself back from hurling himself at the stranger, braced on his toes and aching with the need to defend what he’d caught: a scrap of prey to fill his empty belly. Stone felt foolish. What was he doing? In the middle of twoleg place, about to be pounced on by a cat simply trying to defend himself. And what for? To try to be a leader? A leader would never have gotten himself in this predicament in the first place, the tom thought to himself with a scowl. Suddenly realizing how that scowl might be interpreted, he set his face back to its neutral mask. He had to diffuse the tension, and so with much effort, the tabby's tail stopped lashing. That's a start, at least, he thought to himself.
The grey tabby's ears pricked upon the new accusations. And despite all of the insults, he abruptly rose up to a sitting position, his tail neatly sweeping over his paws. He wasn't even considering how oddly comedic the action would be, but with little emotion in his voice, Stone responded, "Actually, I live in the forest." He dipped his head in the direction of the area. His yellow gaze eyed the scrawny mouse once more before continuing, "There is bountiful prey residing there. You should try hunting there sometime." Somewhat awkwardly, Stone sheepishly glanced away and mumbled, "I can show you, if you'd like. At least someday." It was a strange offer, considering he didn't even know the other's name. But at the very least, he hoped it could be seen as some sort of peace agreement.

My shadow's the only one that walks beside me Fur bushed, claws scraping softly against the ground with each sway caused by the twitch of his bobbed tail, Last kept his bright green gaze fixed on the gray striped tabby. A hiss broke from him as a scowl crossed the other's face, instantly taking offence at the grimace that he knew was directed at him, and even though it disappeared quickly, he didn't even think to consider that it had been a mistake or that it was toward something else. There was nothing else! Just him, this stranger, and the mouse that lay at Last's paws, cooling but still smelling strongly enough to make his stomach groan in complaint.
He twitched again at the sudden motion as the stranger shifted his position, sitting with his tail curled around his paws and a blank expression now covering his face. Last stared, not willing to trust so quickly, his thoughts jumping to the conclusion that it must be a trick- the tom was trying to get him to relax too, maybe thinking that it would make it easier for him to lunge forward t once Last's guard was down... no, he wasn't going to fall for it! His short tail lashed again, a growl bubbled in his throat, and he kept his stance, as tense and untrusting as ever, even as the tom began to speak in calm tones.
"I don't need your help!" he snapped, his own tone as unfriendly as ever. "And I don't need you to show me anything! You're the one who came to try to steal my catch." His muscles were starting to cramp from being held rigid for so long, his legs quivering from the strain, but Last forced himself not to relax yet. "Why don't you go back to the forest where you belong, instead of skulking around here where no cat wants you?" He couldn't forget his mother's hard-taught lessons, and he was hungry, but he couldn't even think about eating until this cat was gone. Last Loner Shortee
