Shellspots || Queen || 38 moons The wind snaked through the forest, rattling the bare trees and making eerie sounds. Shellspots sighed. The silver tabby had once again crossed the river in hopes of gaining some peace and quiet from the three apprentices she had chosen to take on. She hoped that Flare would accept her offer; the three young cats were wearing her thin already. She was a day early for their planned meeting, and so would have to come back again tomorrow to get his answer, but she didn’t mind. The forest was calming, in its own way. Much quieter than their spot by the river, with no babbling young cats to chatter her ears off.
She wondered if perhaps there were other potential Clanmates lurking in the forest. She hadn’t gotten a chance to explore much, spending the time she had trying to persuade Flare to join her. He couldn’t be the only cat in these woods, could he? She highly doubted that. The question was, where would Shellspots be able to find these other cats?
Her question was answered quickly enough when she stumbled upon a tall, strong looking black cat a few tail-lengths ahead. Remembering how she had spooked the orange tom, Shellspots began moving in a wide circle, aiming to place herself right in front of the stranger. She made no effort to conceal herself, the dead branches and brambles around her rustling with her movement. I hope they’re willing to chat a bit, the queen thought to herself, noting that the dark feline had an intense look on their face.

Pandora had left the twolegplace not long after teaching the poor young tom how to hunt for himself. She did hope everything would go smoothly for the poor boy, but she cold only hope. As she pushed through branches and the undergrowth, she bumped into a pale she-cat. Backing up immediately, not knowing if this stranger meant no harm or what, she tensed up in case she had to make a quick dive out of the situation. "Who are you?" Pandora questioned, peering closely. She analyzed the she-cat before her, taking in any detail that could aid her in a confrontation if a fight broke out between the two. Pandora had kept backing up until a safe distance was between the two. More so for Pandora's own sake than the she-cats. She'd rather not get injured in a fight during this cold time. Shaking off snow that clung to her fur as best as she could, her pale yellow eyes stared into the she-cats with curiosity and distrust. Pandora took a quick scan of the snow-filled forest around them, making sure that there wasn't any felines awaiting to ambush her. Once satisfied no one was there, she finally met the she-cats eyes again and held eye contact.

Shellspots || Queen || 38 moons Shellspots realized she misjudged exactly where the stranger was when they suddenly bumped right into her, making her jump and whirl to face them. It was a she-cat, and she backed up quickly, eyeing Shellspots warily as if she was the one who might attack. Well, at least she wasn’t immediately launching into a fight, and for that the silver queen was grateful.
“Hello there,” she began softly, trying to make herself seem unimposing. She pulled herself out of the tangle of bush branches and sat down a respectable distance from the she-cat. “My name is Shellspots, I don’t believe we’ve met. I live across the river, over that way.” She angled an ear in the direction of their camp.
The she-cat was still watching her distrustfully, and Shellspots felt as if an apology might help her warm up to her a little bit, never mind that the black cat was the one who had bumped into her.
“I apologize if I startled you. I was hoping to say hello, I’ve been looking for cats that live in this area for some time now. Most seem to be staying in their dens thanks to the snow,” she admitted.

Pandora visibly eased and her muscles untensed as she introduced herself. Now knowing that there was no danger intended by the she-cat, Pandora felt guilty. She had never felt guilty before, but she had made the worse of a she-cat just wandering around, trying to find others to just chat with. "My name is Pandora." The tall she-cat shuffled her paws, ashamed of assuming the worst of this she-cat. She knew that being too trusting could be harmful, but she felt even worse that she had instantly assumed this feline was ready to attack. Perhaps she needed to learn to be a bit more trusting of other felines around her age or older. "I apologize for assuming the worst in you. You see, I've always been on the move to avoid other felines who may try to kill me. I suppose old habits die hard, haven't had a den since I was a kit staying with my parents." Pandora didn't know why she felt the need to explain herself. Perhaps it was the motherly feeling she felt waving off the silver tabby. Or maybe she was just finally sick of being alone. "I truly am sorry. I apologize if I may seem a bit.. Intimidating. I don't really mean to, not that it's my fault." Now new questions flooded Pandora's mind. Why was this she-cat out in the middle of the cold, looking for others in the area? Pandora didn't even realize she was speaking until the question had left her. "If you don't mind me asking, why are you looking for others in the area?"

Shellspots || Queen || 38 moons The tension seemed to melt from the stranger as soon as Shellspots made it clear that she meant no harm. She introduced herself -- Pretty name, Shellspots thought idly -- and then quickly jumped into an apology, leaving the silver queen speechless for a moment before reply.
“I completely understand, there’s no need to apologize,” she said, looking at Pandora with sympathy. She was still young, Shellspots noted, and had already been through such hardship. Yes, she was big, and undoubtedly strong, with that build, but Shellspots could see in her eyes that she was a sweet cat. Her soft tone and trailing speech only confirmed that, seeming like she felt the need to explain her actions, which had been reasonable as any cat. “It’s only natural to be wary of strangers, I’ve met my fair share of aggressive felines in these woods,” she laughed, trying to make light of the situation.
Then Pandora asked the question that had Shellspots sitting up straighter, ready to pitch her cause to this potential Clanmate. She didn’t know much about her, but the black she-cat certainly looked to be a good fit, if a bit shy.
“Have you ever heard the stories of the Clans that used to live here?” She began, wrapping her tail around her paws neatly as she settled in. “My mother raised me to believe that they were true, long ago. I myself am descended from those cats, and so I have made it my mission to bring them back once more. I believe that they deserve to walk these forests again.” Shellspots paused to let the words settle, hoping she wasn’t overwhelming poor Pandora. “Right now RiverClan -- my Clan -- consists of myself, my kits, a healer, and another young cat who joined us not long ago. I met a tom named Flare two sunrises ago and I’ll be meeting with him tomorrow to hear his decision.”
Shellspots sighed, realizing she was taking too long to get to the point.
“That is to say, the reason I’m out here is to search for more cats to fill our ranks. I’m currently training the three young cats myself, and progress on building the Clan has come to a bit of a standstill because of that. If we had more adult cats in the Clan, they could help with training and making the Clan stronger.”
The queen’s tail swished along the ground, suddenly anxious. It never got easier, she supposed, to calm her nerves when asking a cat to join them. Excitement, certainly, but also fear that they would say no.
“So now I have a question for you: would you like to join us?”

Hearing the story brought back memories. She'd remember the tales her parents told her siblings, of Clans long ago. Groups of cats, like them, living in large groups, protecting each other and fighting each other. Clans so grand, but yet fell to greed and bloodshed on a single night. Hearing about her own kits, with training, made her remember the small, starving one she had taught to hunt. The poor little one was so hungry and desperate. She had enjoyed teaching the little one, and she had promised to always check on him. Pandora listened, and when Shellspots asked her to join she thought for a moment. She had been alone for a long time now, and sometimes she missed her family. Sure they had been cruel and ignorant of her, but she missed the chatter. The way silence rang in her ears every night with just the sound of the chilling wind left her with a feeling of loneliness. She decided, then and there, she didn't want to be alone anymore. Besides, she was sure Shellspots had her paws full with trying to train her kits. Perhaps she could help her. "I'll do it. I'll join. I've been alone far too long now anyway," Pandora hummed. "I'll help train your kits too, anyway I can. If you'll let me, that is."

Shellspots || Queen || 38 moons Pandora was quiet for a long moment, and Shellspots sat patiently, not wanting to interrupt her thoughts. It was not a light decision to make, and it was clear she was weighing her options. Shellspots was about to open her mouth and offer Pandora the same thing she had offered Flare: three sunrises to think on her offer, before they would meet again for the final decision. But then Pandora spoke, her voice quiet but clear, and Shellspots felt a jolt of excitement run up her spine. She hadn’t expected the answer to come so easily.
“I would certainly appreciate the help,” she said, smiling. “Those three can be a pawful. If you’re interested, once you’re settled in we can do some group training sessions before officially assigning you as a mentor to one of them.” It would be good to get a sense of how she interacted with each of them before choosing which kit she would mentor; she had a feeling her gentle temperament would do well with Heronpaw’s relaxed attitude, but perhaps she would be surprised.
She also wanted to learn more about this she-cat before entrusting what was essentially her Clan’s future to her. Whiskers twitching with curiosity, she blinked at Pandora.
“For now, though, tell me about yourself. It sounds like you’ve been travelling for some time, and I’d love to hear about things you’ve seen or learned.” Perhaps she had some hidden skills she had picked up in her travels, and Shellspots wanted to know what they might be gaining by having her as a member.

Pandora thought for a moment. Normally she wasn't asked about her adventures or her past, or anything she's learned. But she was happy to oblige. "Well, let's see.. I have learned to track mice tunneling in the snow. You have to learn to tone out the world around you, and listen. And once you do, push yourself off the ground as hard as you can, usually you can catch at least one mouse with some practice. Although the odds of them dying when you pounce is low, the snow cushions the blow. I usually have to shake my head when that happens, to get snow off my face and to make sure the mouse is finished off." Pandora was quite proud of this skill. It had taken her moons to master, but it always benefited her. "I come from a large family. They never really treated me kindly, so after I was around 7 moons and could hunt to keep myself fed I fled. I had to learn to track scents on my own, make sure to stay downwind of others, and keep alive. I had to learn to hunt from one of my brothers. He couldn't do anything about how the rest of our family to treat me better, but he suggested I take off on my own after he taught me to hunt. I had to leave early because my family caught him teaching me. They weren't too keen on me learning, because apparently I wouldn't amount to a thing." Pandora paused, thinking. Remembering that time wasn't kind to her, bringing back bad memories. "I do hope my brother is alright now, at least. I'm still trying to get better at making my own dens, but I can at least identify old fox dens and expand abandoned rabbit burrows a bit better now." Pandora stopped, realizing she was rambling. Embarrassment flooded through the large she-cat. She had never rambled this much and it was quite embarrassing. "Anyways, what about you? If there's anything about questions about myself feel free to ask. I'm happy to teach how to track mice in the snow, I find it easy. Although it's a challenge to learn, I suppose."

Shellspots || Queen || 38 moons Shellspots listened with interest to the she-cat’s hunting technique. She had never heard of such a method before; it would certainly have been useful in the past few moons when there was so much snow. It had been a struggle to feed herself along with three kits who weren’t exactly proficient hunters yet. She was about to comment on it when Pandora continued, and Shellspots felt her heart twist as the she-cat talked about her family’s harsh treatment.
“I’m sorry about your family, I’m glad you’re doing well for yourself now.” Shellspots herself couldn’t imagine ever refusing to teach her kits; what awful parents! It was for the best that Pandora had left them, she thought. “Perhaps you’ll get a chance to meet your brother again someday,” she added encouragingly. At least from what she said, her brother had been one beacon of kindness in her life.
“I would certainly appreciate a lesson or two on snow-tracking! At least while this snow is still around, it would be good to know.” Though with any luck, the snow would melt soon... It felt like moons had passed since it had first fallen.
“As for myself... You know the basics already. My mother raised me to believe in the Clans, and we were going to bring them back. Together.” Shellspots’ eyes grew far away. “Then, when I was younger than you are now, she was attacked by a monster while we were crossing a thunderpath and I failed to save her.” The silver tabby looked down at her paws. While time had soothed the wound of losing her mother, talking about it still caused an ache in her heart.
“I wandered for a bit, not knowing how to make the Clans real again without her guidance. I met the father of my kits.” Shellspots smiled, thinking of Comet. She wondered how he was doing now. “Then I had a dream, showing me the future of RiverClan, and I knew I had to keep trying. So here I am today.” Shellspots curled her tail over her paws. “If I can keep my mother’s dream alive by bringing the Clans back, it will all have been worth it.”
